RHR Overview and Quick Q with KI7QCF
I have been wanting to make contact with my friend Forrest - KI7QCF, so I finally set up a HamAlert on him and found that he was on 20m today.
Unfortunately I couldnt hear him from my QTH in Chicago, so I was able to leverage RHR - Remote Ham Radio and connected to a station in Phoenix. I did a quick look at the POTA.APP and saw that stations in Phoenix were hearing him "with good sig", so thats how I chose the W7 - Phoenix station.
I typed out the CW, which came across as probably choppy, but don't have the module to connect my CW key to RHR (or flex) yet.
Ill be doing some more videos on RHR (and hopefully more contacts with friends!)
If there is anything you would like to see - let me know!

Vibroplex Straight Key
Переглядів 5024 години тому
This is a friend's Vibroplex Straight Key that I was just playing around with and doing some work to. Because I had it in the shop, I wanted to take the opportunity to showcase it! I know I'm not much of a straight key person, but this is really cool, and I might get one at some point.
Vibroplex Vibrokeyer Deluxe Iambic Morse Code Key

Wanted to just showcase a friend of mine's Vibroplex. He let me borrow it for this video, and I had a chance to clean it up and also fix up a couple of things on it. The great thing about Vibroplex is that you can get replacement parts for any of their keys dating back more than 60 years!
Operating CW Mobile
Переглядів 44721 день тому
I had a lot of comments over the past couple of months asking whether it is safe operating CW while mobile. I just wanted to put this video together to show what I do and work a station doing POTA... … and I did eventually find out that I worked K5KUA!

The GHD Telegraph Key from Japan

This key was purchased used from Ebay and is in absolute perfect shape. The finish is amazing and the action is very smooth. Take a look at the video for some more details. These keys are made in Sendai City, Japan - but are available from the US distributor DX Engineering. I believe retail on this at the time of this recording is $270.

Dang! Yeah about a 22
Let’s go!!! Really excited to finally get you in the log! I had to hit you with TWO FBs haha! Thanks for recording it and thanks for getting me at the next park as well while you were mobile. Made my day! That’s really incredible how you remote in via that software. I really want to check that out. My uncle K7CO has a flex on pre-order and he does some remote work too. $.19/minute for 100’ off center fed dipoles is a bargain! 73 de KI7QCF CW ON!
There are so many people in Canada who want to use this service, but it’s not allowed. 😢
@@ve2zdx oh no! Seriously!? I didn't know that
I just got one of those and the long line quit working. Do you thing is the peddle or the kyer
Glad to see you on TJ. N1mm has a mind of its own sometimes. Bands seamed wonky. Not horrible but
@@JayN4GO I agree! I wanted to bang out 100 qsos quickly, but that did not happen. Took almost an hour and a half.
Heya TJ, did you just start? (DE W9PDS)
Heck yeah! I just did a 90 minute sprint
New Comment: Do you have a listing of your preferred CW settings? I ask because I seem too have gotten a setting wrong on 15m. When I am keying the TX is now different from the RX. I have checked that the SPL is off. I am thinking of a FACTORY RESET. That's why I'm asking about a "master" setting list.
I was always thinking about doing this .. And then I realize how many menu settings there are. I want to make a spreadsheet. What frequency difference are you seeing? And is your Clarifier setting at zero?
Where did you get the mat / desk pad you’re on? With all the callsign country designations, etc. Looks interesting.
@@freddiecruz1026 It is really cool. I bought a second one this year. It's customized with your call sign on it also. I did a video on it on my channel here you might be able to find. But you can also go to www.hamboutique.com The big ones are a little pricey... But I also did get a smaller one
I thought the purpose of those paddles, was so you squeeze them, not pound Brass ? 🤔.....?
I grabbed a VIbroplex straight key after attending hamvention. However, I still suck at straight keys. Maybe you can teach me some time?
@@Utahforrest oh man...I really suck at straight key 😎😁
I just now started this course, so my apologies if you answer this sometime soon. It appears that the Logikey keyers are out of production and hard to find. Any suggestions for reasonable alternatives that are easily obtained?
@@GarySchiltz this might be a good video for me to record. There are a number of good options out there. Sometimes you can find these on eBay, or qth.com, but another favorite of mine is the win keyer
@@k9kj Thanks, I'll check out building a WinKeyer or similar kit. Meanwhile, it looks like your course mainly emphasizes receiving over sending anyway, so I'll work on that while deciding what to get for a keyer. BTW, I'm retired and have some time on my hands these days. I got my General class FCC license years ago and have kept it active, but my CW skills have gotten very rusty through disuse, so I'm just going to start from the ground up. Once I'm comfortable enough, I will get my reciprocal license here in Ecuador where I retired to, and will probably start with CW QRP. I appreciate your course. '73 de W5PAZ (/HC1 eventually).
@@GarySchiltz very cool! Ecuador! That sounds really cool
Oh, a grounded base sure matters on some old tube rigs!
@@chuckcrizer excellent point! I should've that
I have always done squeeze keying and we only had mode A when I learned. I also used mechanical bug keys for a few years and i have a straight key wired in parallel with my memory keyer via a switch box so I can swap backwards and forwards. 73, GM4SVM
I love your switch box idea! I have to say, I need to get practicing with my bug!
@@k9kj I bought the switch box. Its meant for headphones switching but works perfectly for the keys. When I used the internal meter I just had the straight key wired across the paddle but I don't like doing that with the external keyer. I was using the straight key today working an S51 station who must have been a learner. Conditions poor though.
Love straight keys! The older the better.
Has anyone noticed, you don't hear much .... .. (Hi) short hand for laughter, anymore ? Too.....finding people that actually want to talk has become a challenge, as most are constantly in contest mode, with RST, My name is, and QTH ! Hell it's hard to even get a Weather report nowadays ! .... .. !! 😉
@@sleeve8651 I agree many people do not want to have a rag chew. I do come across some folks that are willing to do so, but I think the majority of people calling CQ just want a quick contact because they might not be super confident yet in their abilities.
@@k9kj As to new Ops being a bit shy or intimated, weren't we all ? Obviously, in my opinion, it seems we've lost the Elmer's of old, now replaced by the internet and long hours of sitting in front of a computer trying to memorize a string of answers ! Look at the number of Extra Class Operators ! It's like someone spilled a bag of, " Extra " seeds, and they have sprung up everywhere ! Disturbing because many have no practical app, and I have heard conversations where an Extra couldn't answer a question a Novice would know ! Sadly too, is the choice I guess the Feds made, to encroach upon what I knew to be the Novice CW portion of 40 meters, by allowing Phone Ops there ! I like many, back in the day, cut our teeth there with literally Hundreds of hours of practice, and QSO's ! My Radio room once was adorned with QSL cards ceiling to floor, wall to wall QSL cards, most unsolicited ! That's just the way it was ! We've lost a lot with this newfangled technology, to say the least ! Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir ! I just began to get active on HF, after several years away handling Life. And getting back on CW has been an absolute Joy ! ( And I'm running QRP ! ) I literally felt like a kid having my first CW QSO ! And continue to grin from ear to ear, with each contact ! Not especially excited where I am age wise, but glad I got in when I did ! Some 44 years now ! Too, I think many lack the true passion we once shared for all things Radio . And I'm happy to say after much prodding, I recently motivated a friend to get back on the Air, and he thanked me the other day, for helping him regain his interest, as he too is having a Ball ! Guess you can't have everything, but it doesn't get any better than that ! .... .. ! '73 👍😉 Oh ....and don't get me started on the Digital guys taking over the QRP Frequency of 7.040 ! 🫲😳🫴
This is great.....! Now....if I just knew my ABC's ! 🫲🙄🫴
I get all letters right except K and R. I mjght have to go over it a few times
I find watching him key the letters to be more distracting. Listening rather than watching is actually easier to process
It definitely helped. The way i learnt it from this video was to not look at this screen by holding the speaker near my ear and visualising in my mind the . And - Probably one of the best and easiest ways ive learnt it. 👍 if i wrote the alphabet with morse on a piece of paper, i personally think the best way is to learn in ASCENDING ORDER like a PYRAMID.
@@AirwolfBadarse very cool and thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing with us!!
Why not just use the Telephone ?
I know I would love to say ATAS is a good antenna, but I would be doing ham community a disservice if I said it was better than the Tarheel. Tarheel is much better built antenna that will last a very long time. I actually had ATAS, currently own Tarheel and Diamond SD330. I can honestly say, I am loving the Tarheel by a wide margin.
Is Bk as a prosign a hard break
What you use to clean that key
Can I use it on polished brass or will it hurt it
It's been quite a while since I did CW, but if I remember right, to send a Q, I would have: 1-Hold the dah paddle until the second dah starts; 2-Let go of the dah paddle and hold the dit paddle; 3-When the dit starts sounding, hold the dah paddle until the dah starts sounding; 4-Let go of the dah. I think in Iambic A, you were holding the dah paddle even after the second dah sounded and you had pressed the dit paddle. I can't even remember what rig I was using (probably my father in law's - N0LO SK - Ten-Tec Omni V). But the muscle memory convinces me this is how I always did it even though my cerebral memory is getting a little weaker LOL. I wonder if what I did would be considered A or B? 73 de Gary, W5PAZ
Wherre did you get the desk mat? I have that key too.
@@AlanG2DXU thanks! I did a video on this mat, and it is a little pricey... But you can try www.hamboutique.com
How's it holding up a year later?
Enjoy mate! De vk2ir Tommy
The spacing of the dits and dahs are important, too. If E and T are put too close together, you might think it’s an A, or T then E too close, you might think it’s an N. I would have spelled NATE - -./.-/-/.
@@Sonicgott this is so very true. I have a couple of examples of incorrect spacing in other videos on my site. Thanks for watching!
@@k9kj Anytime. Love learning CW! KF0QNM
Is the Vibroflex Co. still a thing? They used to have a lifetime guarantee. Or maybe they called it a warranty? Anyway, used to be you could send it back to them, and they would renew it, clean and polish it. Replace any broken or missing parts. And then they'd ship it back.
@@cw2gtc yes they are still a thing but they were bought some years ago and seems like the lifetime guarantee is no longer.
I have 2. One exactly like this, the other is a Ten Tec Limited Edition with grey base. Use them both.

Just a note that the "Vibrokeyer" is the name for their original line of single lever paddles. It doesn't apply to their Iambic keys. (super-nice key!)
