Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L Review
The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens is the first portrait lens for Canon’s RF-mount digital camera series. It’s very sharp, and has minimal distortion, even when used wide open. In this review, I’ll be going through the features of the lens, and I’ll also show you some photographs that I’ve taken with it.
If you’re switching to Canon's RF-mount system, this is definitely the best portrait lens you can get. I’d generally recommend using using the lens either wide open at f/1.2, or within a few stops of wide open, to get the best bokeh.
If you have any questions about the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L, or comments about the review, please leave them in the comments below. Thanks!

Kentmere 400 Review
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 років тому
In this review, I talk about Kentmere 400, the most affordable of the black & white films. It’s only available in 35mm, and it’s also marketed under the name “Kentmere Pan 400.” Kentmere 400 has relatively fine grain and decent sharpness. I don’t like it anywhere near as much as Kodak Tri-X, but it’s a nice film, and if you develop your own rolls at home, and are on a budget, this is the one to...
Canon 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Review
Переглядів 2,2 тис.5 років тому
In this review, we’ll be looking at the Canon 24-70mm f/4L IS USM. This budget-friendly midrange zoom lens is a solid alternative to Canon's better (but heavier, and more expensive) f/2.8L lens. The Canon 24-70mm f/4L is a nice travel lens, because you can use the wide end of the focal length range for landscape photos, the normal (40-50mm) range for street photography and general use, and the ...

The Canon GP-E2 is a geotagging accessory that mounts into your Canon camera’s hotshoe and adds location data to your photos’ EXIF data. Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR DX Review

In this Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR DX review, I’ll be showing you this popular kit lens from 2007-2015. The lens in this video is from 2007, and it was a major part of my journey back into photography in 2007. Although it's a very basic lens, this 50-200mm lens does feature vibration reduction (which is what the “VR” stands for), which does a lot to compensate for its poor maximum aperture, allo...
Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM Review
Переглядів 705 років тому
The Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM is a one of the most popular and affordable non-kit lenses for Canon DSLRs. If you’re reluctant to spend much money on your photography gear, this affordable lens will get you the low light ability that your kit lenses probably lack. Optically, it’s very sharp, and although it feels somewhat plasticy, it doesn’t feel cheap or low-quality. The cat in some of the photos s...

    Between this 55-200 and 70-300 af-p vr... which one has the best image quality?

    • @ThatOtherTom
      @ThatOtherTom 5 місяців тому

      I’ve never used the Nikon 70-300mm AF-P, but I’d expect it to have better image quality in real world usage, since it autofocuses faster and has stronger vibration reduction. (It’s possible that Nikon has improved the optics, but pretty much every Nikon lens is sharp so I wouldn’t base my decision on that.) Another important reason why I’d choose that lens is that I prefer 70-300mm in a telephoto zoom lens. This 55-200mm is okY if you’re on a budget and you don’t mind that it’s DX, or you have a DX Nikon. But I’ve missed some shots with it due to its somewhat slow autofocus.

    Hey, thanks for the video, man. I'm helping out a friend to take his proposal photo for him and future fiancee and I need a lens that can take a get a great photo of them from 25-30 feet away. Would this be an ideal lens for that scenario? I currently have a 35mm prime and 18-55mm kit lens. I'm worried that those might be too short.

    • @ThatOtherTom
      @ThatOtherTom 11 місяців тому

      You’re welcome! If you’re sure that the lighting is bright (like if your friend is proposing in a park during the day,) this should work great. If you have a larger budget or if there won’t be bright sunlight, the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E is much better in lower lighting. You should be able to rent it cheaply from the BorrowLenses website. I would consider that the ideal Nikon DX lens for this. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

      On the lower right side, there’s a cover that can be removed. (It looks like a black button under a red mark, but it’s not a button, and it’s removable.) Inside is a connection port for the remote cable shutter, in case you want to take pictures without touching the camera, like for selfies or family pictures.

    I know this video is a few years old but this was super interesting for me. I'm buying an M50II. We had the old Canon Rebel G sitting around and I started wondering if this lens (mine is Canon EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 III) might actually work with an adapter or if it was just plain worthless. Most of us are on a tight budget after buying a camera so who cares if it's older! If it has any value to me at all, and in my case it's free, why not use it?! I know you can convert it to a Macro too. Thank you for the video!

    • @ThatOtherTom
      @ThatOtherTom 3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! I agree, old lenses can still take great photos, and when you’re on a budget (or just want to try something new,) older lenses are great. Canon made a bold move to switch to the electric EF mount, but it gave them tons of compatibility. With Nikon, old and new F-mount cameras and lenses usually aren’t fully compatible with each other, but *all* of the Canon EF stuff works together. Being able to use these old lenses is part of why I like Canon so much.

      Connects fine to Mac -- you need the Canon GPS Log File Utility, available from the Canon support page for the GP-E2. Most recent firmware is version 2.02. I found the utility a little crashy, but it was written for a much old MacOs. Got there in the end, although had to do a couple of restarts

    I have a Nikon d3300. I am interested in the nikon 18-140mm vr lens and the nikon 55-200mm vr lens. Which one do you think will be better? I have 50mm 1.8 for a portrait. • @ThatOtherTom
      @ThatOtherTom 3 роки тому

      Either lens should work for portraits during bright conditions, but if it were me, I’d get the 18-140mm. It’s going to be more versatile for general purposes.

    • @countbailiff3120

      I have the 18-140 but I find it a little short, for similar money I prefer my 18-55 vr and 55-200 vr combination a little more effort changing lens but I found the 18-55 better over that focal length then what I was achieving with my 18-140, also the little extra reach offerd by the 55-200 gives me more flexibility, just my opinion what works for me, hope it helped you a little, regards Henry

    • @ThatOtherTom
      @ThatOtherTom 4 роки тому

      In my experience, it works well indoors. I think it would be a great way to automatically geotag what part of the college the photos were taken. That said, if you’re around very tall buildings in a place like Manhattan, or tall mountains, that might throw it off a bit. It would still give you the general area, but you wouldn’t have pinpoint accuracy.

      Yes, if you don't want to pump a crapload of money into a hobby, which are non-profit endeavors by nature, you will find that this lens is more than capable, especially for beginners. It performs very well in good lighting conditions, but in low light and for night time you'll need a tripod. If you break it, it's dirt cheap to replace. There's also the "newer" version, the VR II, which only has a locking button when retracted, similar to the 18-55 VR II kit lens. There's also the 55-300 version, but at least four times more expensive - if money is no object.
