Forge Exam - Diagnosing a Propane Forge
Переглядів 752 роки тому
I recorded a video of starting up my propane forge that I've been running for nearly six years non-stop to see if the maker (Shawn Cunningham of Front Step Forge) could help me diagnose an issue I've been having with uneven heat in the burn chamber. I highly recommend Front Step Forge's products, and this forge is worth every penny. frontstepforge.com/collections/blacksmith-supplies/products/bl...
Fitting Broadfork Handles
Переглядів 2684 роки тому
This 6.5 minute DIY video details the process I use to fit store bought 4' shovel handles into the broadforks that I create. If there are any questions about the process, please contact me or leave a comment. Thank you for watching! Tim the 'smith www.reforgedironworks.com
Making a Hori Hori Part 2
Переглядів 7206 років тому
This video details the process that goes into finishing a hori hori garden knife after the forging and tempering is completed. The hori hori featured in this video differs a little bit from my standard model to fit the specific requirements of the client. Specifically, the paracord-wrapped handle has the ties on the opposite side and the pommel was made wider and rounder. The handle is also a t...
Testing a turkey foot fire poker

A quick video for a potential client showing the strength of the fire poker's turkey foot-style hook. It's 1/2" solid square mild steel, the end is forge welded.
Harvesting with a Kama (Japanese Sickle)
Переглядів 7 тис.6 років тому
Lorinda demonstrates how the kama is an ideal tool for selective harvesting and cutting of green plants and herbs. Here she is specifically harvesting leaves and flower buds from a comfrey patch. The kama can be used for many other applications such as harvesting garden greens, squash, and cutting grasses and weeds around trees and other sensitive perennials. To find out more about the kama and...
Harvesting Garlic with a Broadfork
Переглядів 2126 років тому
We harvest our fall garlic using a broadfork, and they are some big bulbs! My wife has an easy, relaxed approach to working with the broadfork, and the size of the tool complements her process. The advantage to using a broadfork to harvest garlic (and any root crop) is that it loosens and aerates the soil while harvesting at the same time. To find out more about the broadfork and how it's made,...
The Tool Trifecta
Переглядів 2996 років тому
A short video clip showing how we use the broadfork, russian hoe and hori hori to prepare a garden bed for planting. The bed is 4' wide and 25' feet long (100 sq. ft.) and my wife and I prep it in about half an hour. All the tools we're using in this video were made by me in the forge using reclaimed materials. To find out more about these tools, visit these pages: Broadfork - reforgedironworks...
How to Forge a Leaf Hook

Shop Tour

A quick tour of my workshop space. It's a little crowded in there and you can see that it's an unheated space as well. Makes for cold work in the winter! It's a modest space but I've made it work for almost three years now. Website: ironandthyme.ca Instagram reforgedironworks Etsy: etsy.com/ca/shop/ReforgedIronworks

This video details the forging process I use to make a hori hori. reforgedironworks.com etsy.com/ca/shop/ReforgedIronworks reforgedironworks NOTE: This is a long video! Even with speeding up parts in it, it still clocks in at over 40 minutes. I'd say this video is here to educate others on my process and maybe learn something from it. 0:00 Project Intro 3:37 Start forging the bla...
Forge Weld Attempt
Переглядів 837 років тому
I am trying to teach myself forge welding, and I decided to start with the faggot weld where I basically weld a stack of material together. In this case, it's a section of 3/8" mild steel bar folded over on itself. I'm not sure what I need to do differently in order to make this work. Perhaps the forge isn't hot enough? Or maybe prying a weld apart at orange heat isn't indicative of a good weld...
Heirloom Tool Project
Переглядів 1087 років тому
I share and narrate along to a series of pictures that exemplifies the process I use to make rice knives (also known as kama) for a client who wanted them made specifically from old harrow teeth that came from his old family farm. You may recognize the harrow teeth as I used one of these to show how I test scrap metal for its suitability as a tool steel. You can watch that video here: ua-cam.co...
VR to Prepper Madness - S Hook Challenge
Переглядів 507 років тому
I forge an s-hook out of 3/8" square stock in response to Arnie's (aka Prepper Madness) challenge video, which you can view here: ua-cam.com/video/xg2UlUz8Ey8/v-deo.html My challenge, for anyone who is interested, is to forge a hinge. I'm not picky on style, size or anything. Just make one out of what you got lying around and let's see the creation process! Thanks again to Arnie for the shout o...

Testing Scrap Steel for Tool Making
What size stock did you start with?
Sorry for the late reply. I used 1/4" round for the pin, and 3/16" round for the hairclip.
สวัสดีครับ😮❤
Nice work
Very nice. I started on a block anvil and fuigo/box bellows with a japanese side draft forge. All made by me with gods help, he gave me the gift of my hands.
The tap the anvil, just to assent dominance
nice
Strong Smith. Strong Steel. Very impressive stuff!
She is adorable but that hair!
Beautiful tools! Would love to see more of this💪🏽

I’m just trying to help with the UA-cam algorithm
Nicely complete treatment of this controversial issue! I use scrap steel for personal tools and art projects, but for tooling I want to sell, or knives, I like to know precisely what the HT is, and I can never know that with scrap steel.
a serious looking tool, good style! ...i like the look of the slightly shorter handle and large pommel...
good style, impressive strength!
Thank you, Dave. The client ended up ordering this style poker and two toasting forks as well!
great!
spent lots of time clearing bamboo grass from around the edges of rice fields with kama, lovely tools!
educating folks on when and how to use these tools is great, they may not know they need one until they see how well it functions in action!
That's the hope! Over the next while, we'll be leveling up on our photography and sound.
excellent! ...doesn't take much to make a difference...
This is AWESOME! I want my trifecta... will you deliver? :)
Anita Shultz I'd be very happy to make you the tool set! I wish we could deliver it personally; we all miss you and your family.
@@timpeel-wickstrom5739 I only accept hand-delivery for items like these. 💗
An excellent demo my friend. Those are awesome tools you made!
Thanks, Prepper! Another video is forthcoming shortly.
when i was working with mr.schrock i spent lots of mornings making hooks, a great way to practice tapers, speed up use of heats, get the leaves shaped efficiently...and make some volume market sales!
Crossed Heart Forge - islandblacksmith I think the next step for me is to develop some discipline in my daily shop time: warm up with some hooks every day, get into my main work for the day, finish up with some forge welding practice. It's the regular and focused practice of the foundational skills that yield real dividends. Thanks for the comment!
Looks good Tim! Thanks for trying to guilt me into cleaning up my shop, lol
lovely post drill, nice crisp charcoal chopping there...your shop is bigger than mine! ...but you are doing wood/finishing in the same space, splitting them up could be an easy (and cleaner) next move when needed... small is good...your shop isn't full until it looks like this: ua-cam.com/video/cNHAjMsmfiY/v-deo.html ^____^
Crossed Heart Forge - islandblacksmith had a look at that video... you aren't kidding! As for another place to do the finish and woodworking, well, I've already commandeered a room in the house!
great!
yeah, kama carving, lovely handles! ...i recognize that bending swage!
Crossed Heart Forge - islandblacksmith the kama is great for carving these handles! thank you again for the swage; it's been a great help
you might be able to tack some flat bar on the bottom/edges so it won't slide off the anvil...or a bit of a hardy shank...
Nice job! Some good tips about using the water on the anvil face, and curving the blade to remove the scale. Well done!
Thumbs Up! New here. Love metal working like this that's cool. Prepper Madness sent me over. Thanks for sharing.
Big Crazy Outdoor Adventures thanks for watching!
I just sub and prepper madness sent me over.
easyprepper101 thanks for the sub!
keep it up! cleanliness and temperature are the two biggest challenges...
Was this before our phone conversation?
Yep.
Now I see, try drawing your point for the turkey leg out first, bend then weld while you are drawing out the tip point
Ok, so I would continue to forge weld and shape the point after bending it?
I"ll send you a photo via email
Better yet, this is exactly the way I do it ua-cam.com/video/PPFFNZdsAOM/v-deo.html
I really like it whem there is a bit of history behind the making of an item.I like the consistancy, Great looking tools Tim!
nice work! those are sure lovely old harrow teeth with a great story!
Crossed Heart Forge - islandblacksmith thank you! I really do hope I can do more projects like this in the future.
...and polish up a scrap of one and etch it in vinegar to see if it might be shear steel even...
I'll do that!
nice to see the frogs hard at work! that is a lovely anvil!
Crossed Heart Forge - islandblacksmith the grenouille tenugui! it's a great anvil though I need to dress the face
Awesome video Brother, nicely made! I"ll do a hinge video first thing tomorrow
Prepper Madness looking forward to it!
Madness suggested I check ur site out,,,good video!
those are lovely old style harrow teeth! the only way i know to test for manganese is to forge a blade and do yaki-ire to see where the hamon falls in relation to the clay but they certainly look like a simple 10xx carbon steel which would be excellent for kama and san mai work. ...and that is a very nice vise!
Just subbed you my friend from prepper madness!!
Good testing process Tim. You got a good score! Nice forge lol. Iron and Thyme I like that
That's a great garden tool Tim, I really like it! Show that poker you were talking about, cant get into my gmail account for some reason
Right on Tim. You gotta get up here, gotta a few edger and cuttoff saw blades from the mill as well as leaf springs and chipper blades for you!!
nice looking setup!
Hey, Tim! Saw your post on Verge Permaculture. Nice looking tools you're making, and I really like your sustainable take on blacksmithing. What type of blower are you using for your forge? I built a scrap-wood box bellows for my charcoal forge, but I'm always curious to see what other charcoal users go with for their setup. Looking forward to your next two posts.
Hi Scott, thank you! Right now I'm using an old hand cranked blower. I'm considering making a "fuigo" box bellows to use for its quiet operation and ease of transport to live demos, but that won't be for a while yet.
Nice. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll be making a new one that's a bit more transportable in the future. My current one is larger than needed and also has a couple spots that aren't perfectly square, so the operation isn't nearly as smooth as hoped. Planning to do any more forging videos in the future?
I do plan to make more videos, although I'll have to figure out how to make it better quality. I think a time lapse of forging a hori hori would be pretty cool!
Sweet. Wish I wasn't a few thousand miles away, as I'd be glad to help with filming. Also, for when not using my larger camera, I built a super-simple wooden holder for my phone that goes on top of my tripod and holds my phone horizontally for filming. Simple and works well, so maybe something like that would help for the time being.
