And then when his time of need came, nobody was a confidant he could trust his feelings with besides Palps. He had zero hope for redemption in this scene because nobody included the two key ingredients: loving the man in front of their face and sternly persuading him of the ability to hold to noble values. Luke did both, and that was ultimately how Vader was defeated. Hate never finds rest.
