Part 2, Rebuilding the Passenger side Crossfire Throttle body on a C3, C4 Corvette or F body car.
The Passenger side Throttle body has small differences than the drivers side do to the way the fuel is regulated. I'm Rebuilding both Crossfire throttle bodies on a Corvette this will be a 4 part series in which will I do the following, 1) Drivers side 2) Passenger side 3) adjusting fuel pressure 4) Synchronizing the two throttle bodies. This is the same process whether you have a C3 or C4 Corvette or a F body car.

    Is there a solution for upgrading/updating the refrigerant? Cant buy R-12 anymore... Buy a new AC compressor that will retro fit or is there something else?

    • @84c4corvetteguy5
      @84c4corvetteguy5 5 днів тому

      Yes, You can update the system to R134a you need a kit to retrofit the R12 valves to R134a valves which cost very little. I would also change the accumulator at the same time. R12 uses Mineral oil and R134 uses PAG oil when you change everything over add Ester oil with UV and it will mix with the Mineral oil left in the system and the R134. You cant put PAG and Mineral oil in the same system those don't play well together and you don't want to use anymore Mineral oil with the R134a. Also vacuum out the system real good to get the moisture out before you charge it this also helps suck in the Ester oil before you add R134 or you can add the oil to the inlet side (closest to the evaporator) of the new accumulator VERY IMPORTANT DO NOT PUT THE OIL IN THE OUTLET SIDE (going back to the compressor) AS IT WILL SLUG THE COMPRESSOR AND RUIN IT! I hope this helps!

    Knock on wood I haven't had to do this yet - amazingly still originals without issues - really the only parts that haven't been rebuilt/replaced (damn I hope I didn't just jinx myself)! These really aren't any more complicated than a carberator, but they have their own mystique which I think keeps people from getting in and rebuilding them correctly. At least you can still get the kits as many other pieces parts are not unattainium (i.e. EGR solenoid). I'll keep this bookmarked as it's obviously not if but when I'll be repeating this process. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.

    The ThermAC sensor is designed to maintain 100°F to prevent carb/throttle plate icing. The wet intake like a CFI needs that warm air for fuel vaporisation and the injector pulsewidth is calibrated for 100° air. I'm an ancient MoPar tech and there was a way to tweak our version of the ThermAC sensor to make sure we got the needed sir temp. I'm unsure if there is a way to tweek the GM sensor. The Tuned-Port depends on the coolant flowing thru the lower part of the throttle body for the throttle plate icing issue. TPI owners in cool/cold climates can get into icing issues if they do the coolant bypass for that extra 1-2hp.

    • @84c4corvetteguy5
      @84c4corvetteguy5 2 місяці тому

      Absolutely right, these were only used on carburetors and throttle body's with a wet intake systems Once they changed over to dry intake systems with throttle body's they started running coolant through the throttle body's to prevent icing. Thanks for watching!

      I was going to rebuild mine but when I took it apart I found that the front bearing surface had a serrated edge and it was glued into the housing. I tried to find a bearing with a serrated edge but couldn't find one anywhere. When I called the rebuilder he laughed and confirmed that the bearing was indeed glued and serrated so I just sent it out to have him rebuild it. He said I can't believe you got it apart without cracking the front housing. Thanks for watching!

    Still running with my factory 84 Air pump. Did you have some warning before yours went out?

    • @84c4corvetteguy5
      @84c4corvetteguy5 3 місяці тому

      That's awesome yours still works. I had No warning at all, Came to a stop sign and the car stalled went to restart it and it seemed like a dead battery. The battery was old so I just went to the store and got another one only to find out now it started but the belt was smoking bad. Thanks for watching!

    Weird thing. My 84 c4 doesn’t have both. Ordered both. Only has the one sensor that covers both jobs. It’s the 3 wire sensor.

    • @torrlowe3832
      @torrlowe3832 3 місяці тому

      And of course he says it later on in the video <3 But as I said. It’s 1984 :) maybe previous owner did a conversion??

    • @84c4corvetteguy5
      @84c4corvetteguy5 3 місяці тому

      Ya I don't know the rhyme or reason to why they are all different. I ordered the 3 wire sensor first because that is what it called for, but then when I took off the intake I found the two different sensors so I ordered them instead but the 3 wire sensor package reads for 82 and 84 which would be the Cross fire cars the last C3 and the first C4. I thought that I remembered replacing the 3 wire sensor on the later Vettes. ?????????? Thanks for watching!

    I'm assuming this is by the book? I think i saw a video that they adjusted the throttle bodies then adjusted the linkage to zero. Guess it really doesn't matter if both are reading the same. Have you put the bushings on the throttle shafts yet, that's the main reason they get out of sync. Really helps and the car runs much smoother at idle. Great video. 👍🏻

    • @84c4corvetteguy5
      @84c4corvetteguy5 3 місяці тому

      Thank you, I did not put bushings in the shafts I completely rebuilt both throttle body's and the shafts were tight so I left them alone and yes this was done by the book. I started my career at Pontiac around 1980 and 1982 the Trans Am's came out with this engine configuration so It was what I started my career with and this is why I bought this year Corvette. Enjoyed watching your video and really appreciate someone who can explain the workings of the crossfire injection. Hopefully it can save a few from the carburetor switch. Keep up the good work 👏

    Hey, thats great. Im a big fan of the single din touchscreens. They get better every few years. It is strange that they are not further along in development than they are. I cant imagine having the type with the ejection massive screen that lrobably shakes around and covers up the info center. Anyway, i typically go with a single dine and the 0.5 din space has a pocket. In a c4 especially the space to place you phone or wallet in the pocket is awesome. Love the backup cam feature as well. Best of all worlds. Now you just need one that allows for a plug in very high quality noise cancellation mic and good to go.

    Good video explaination. I'll add that the fuel mixture distribution on the Crossfire wasn't great especially after a cold start, so using warmed air for the intake helped out until there was enough heat in the intake manifold. This was probably less important in the summer, but more important in cold weather.

    • @84c4corvetteguy5
      @84c4corvetteguy5 4 місяці тому

      Very true! All wet intake systems (Carbs, TBI) had this problem of fuel puddling in the intake. When the atomized fuel hit the cold metal of the intake manifold it would puddle turning back from atomized vapor to liquid fuel that doesn't burn. This problem was basically solved when the port fuel injection systems came out and they went to a dry intake. Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy my channel.

    Thank you, sir! Had some quick questions. Is it really necessary to install a block-off plate in place of the EGR valve? Wouldn't simply capping off the vacuum port on the EGR valve serve the same purpose?

    • @84c4corvetteguy5
      @84c4corvetteguy5 4 місяці тому

      Yes it would if your valve stays shut. Some times the old valve floats open on there own due to a weak spring, Sometimes they are stuck open. I see a lot of people take the valve off and put epoxy in the hole where the pintle is to prevent exhaust flowing through the valve and then reinstalling the valve. This gives a stock appearance but the valve wont flow any exhaust. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
