From plein-air to studio – lessons learned #1
As plein-air season is well underway, I still feel quite dissatisfied with my plein-air art. Part of it is because I do not feel completely at ease with my setup and supplies yet, part of it because I feel more pressure when painting outside, part of it simply because of a lack of practice. So today I am bringing you on a plein-air hike in the North of Austria (border with Czeck republic) and then trying to re-do one of my artworks in the studio, using the same supplies. It took me about 25min to do the new version, and I think it took me 15 to 20min for the small one onsite. On the corner you can see the onsite process of another drawing I did the same day. I started with a blue pencil and then did a gouache study - the overall thing took about 20min😊
This series is inspired by @SarahBurnsStudio series of Lessons learned, which I find super informative. Some lessons learned on my side with this one:
- Simplify the landscape, especially the background. 3 to 4 layers max for complex sceneries helps me simplify and not get lost in the details.
- Draw bigger with the water brushes, as they do not allow for the same amount of details. Going small will end-up being muddy (for me)
- Play as much as possible with your plein-air supplies even in the studio - play to find your perfect sketchbook and setup!
- Practice whenever you can, but keep the pressure low and trust the process 😉
I go more into the details of these lessons learned in a blogspot, so feel free to check it out if you’re interested! (link to come)
I also have a blogspot and a video about my plein air art supplies. It is not completely up-to-date, and I will continue to update the blogpost when I find time.

Creating my new watercolor palette
Переглядів 61214 днів тому
Hi everyone! After a new break, I am back. In this video, I will be talking a little bit about a process that took me weeks to complete: creating my new watercolor palette. I went with very safe choices, as I am not very familiar with colors and pigments yet, but I hope that this will be the start of a journey in the world of colors and also the start of my collection of watercolors 😉 I was pre...
Sketchbook tour - artsy chatty tour 😉

Hi everyone! I’m back after a few weeks / months out of UA-cam. I’ve had a lot going on, and I put a lot of pressure to continue creating one video per week… But I ended up not editing a single of these videos. So now I’m starting fresh, more or less where I left tings: with a sketchbook tour 😊 This is a watercolor sketchbook that I’ve made myself, using Hahnemühle watercolor paper - 100 % cell...
100-day project: Days 011-025 and finishing an acrylic painting
Переглядів 863 місяці тому
Hi everyone! Here is the second episode of my videos on the 100-day project. It’s been all going fine so far, in between the breaks. In this video, I give you a short sketchbook tour of the 100-day project, and then show the full process of finishing my acrylic painting! It was really nice having the project giving me the structure to create this finished piece. This video was a nightmare to ed...

Hi everyone! Today is a bit of a different video format. I’m still experimenting on how to show bits and pieces of my life as a part-time artist. Today, I’m going to show you the second box from Sarah Burns x Craftamo gouache subscription. I had more doubt about the subject of that one (green fields are not my cup of tea) but I ended up loving it! I also did a small tour of my studio - sorry fo...
White watercolor, limited palette, an autumn misty landscape
Переглядів 543 місяці тому
Hi everyone! Today is a more relaxed video - no big project or painting series - where I will be diving into the world of white watercolor! I’ve always been confused with white watercolor, as it does not seem to be a very useful color… But can you still use it to create interesting effects? That’s what I’m going to be investigating today, playing with different techniques and putting them toget...

Hi everyone! Welcome back to a new video on seascapes. On the last video of this series, I had worked on the composition, and showed how I took a reference photo and simplified it into basic shapes. I also talked a little bit about the contrasts in colors, warmth, value, details, etc. Now in this video I am using my concept sketches and playing with colors, to find the palette for my final pain...
100-day project: 10 days in a painting habit… A chatty artsy vlog!
Переглядів 924 місяці тому
Hi everyone! Today, I am going to be talking about the first ten days of the 100-day project, while tackling “day 10”. I will insert small clips of the painting process for the other days (work in progress on my editing skills, it was super hard for me to do and I hope it does not work too bad). For now, I mostly did quick 20-min studies during this project. I will for sure do some longer sessi...
#1 Part-time artist vlog: Sarah Burns & Craftamo gouache subscription unboxing!
Переглядів 2514 місяці тому
Hi everyone! In this video, I am trying something a little bit different! As I mentioned on my last video, I want to use my channel as a motivation to tackle bigger art projects this year. To do so, I thought a “Vlog” format would be better than my usual format of video, where I shoot the whole video at once. So, this week, I’m trying this out, taking you on the journey of my first art subscrip...
One year after: What did I learn by starting an art channel on Youtube?
Переглядів 5654 місяці тому
Hi everyone! It’s been one year now since I have started my youtube channel… To celebrate this birthday with you, I decided to “recreate” one of my first UA-cam videos, that I did end of March last year. In this video, I talked a little bit about my journey as a part-time, self-taught artist and how I ended up on UA-cam, all of this while painting Hogwarts. This year, I will recreate this water...
Is this the best tool for “poor quality” oil pastels?
Переглядів 645 місяців тому
Hi everyone! This week, I have decided to give another try to my “poor quality” oil pastels. A few months ago, I have bought a pack of 36 oil pastels from Jaxon. I have found these oil pastels hard to layer and not so nice to use… In this video, I give them another try, looking for ways to work with their limitations! And a palette knife comes in very handy 😉 The painting took be about 20 minut...
Series Paths #1: from the concept sketches to a watercolor piece

Hi everyone! Still struggling to find a posting schedule. I’m working on the concept of my videos, and it takes quite some time, so for now I’m sticking to my “old-style” videos… but with delay. Today, I’m working on a new piece inspired by a picture I’ve taken this autumn. I have already reproduced it a few times in alcohol-based markers, and even had a first try with watercolors. I ended up l...
How to color sketchy mushrooms with alcohol-based markers & Plans for 2024

Hi everyone! I’m super behind schedule this week, I hope to get back on track in the coming couple of weeks. It has been quite busy this end of January / beginning of February… Today, I’m drawing a sketchbook spread full of mushrooms. You can get extra pans for the micro palette that divides the pan into 2 or 4 so you can put more colors in the palette. I have 16 colors in my micro palette

Oh yes, I've seen that from other artists! Thanks for the reminder :) But isn't it a bit small for your brushes? And how many paintings can you make with 1/4 a pan? I usually take mine for max one-week hiking holidays where I try to paint a small thing every day.

@@jodabbles I use mine for tiny paintings. So, I use tiny brushes. But as a travel palette I was thinking in order to get your perylene green in you might like a pan that is split in two. I love Perylene green and couldn't do without it.

True, that's a good idea! I have not used the perylene green much so far, I can't wait to play more with it. Looks like a fun color :)

Beautiful palette . I have a mix of different brands in my specialty palettes. My everyday palette I fell in love with Marie’s Concentrated Pigment watercolors and they are really outstanding in quality . I was able to purchase 36 colors on sale for about $35 dlls . I also have granulating watercolors palettes . I love collecting and organizing my watercolor collection. We can never have enough lol .

Thank you so much :) I am still experimenting with brands, slowly building the collection so that my wallet is no too angry with me ^^ But it is sooo nice just to swatch and experiment with new colors and brands. I have never heard of Marie's concentrated pigment watercolors, maybe I will give them a try in the future, especially if I find such a good deal!

Oh thanks! I've been doing that for a couple of years now and had no issue with mold or whatever (I have mostly synthetic brushes, maybe it helps?). I mainly do it to protect the bristles while carrying the brushes around. Do you think it can damage the brushes? 🤔
