Old Guy And A Bike is about the celebration of cycling as a senior athlete. I bring my 35 years of experience as a mountain biker, road rider, and gravel bike lover as well as my two decades of reviewing and writing about cycling products to this channel as we ride, test, explore, and push ourselves to be the best we can be despite our age. It's not over yet. Just keep pedaling.
Pirelli Cinturato Gravel RC 45mm Gravel Tire - Is It Still A Great Choice In 2025?
@oldguyandabike tested the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel RC 45mm gravel bike tire in 2023 and now, after trying some other tires on the market, does he still like it in 2025 for So Cal gravel bike rides?

Well, It Almost Worked: 2.1" Tires On A Gravel Bike?
Great review. I’ve been on the H 45s front and rear for 2700 miles. Only one puncture while using my gravel as a xc rig. Love them. One thing, for me a slight uptick in weight (which I’ll lose in body weight during a ride) isn’t a concern. The durometer matters more. For a nearly bald tire, the H hold a line and I trust them completely. Also riding in SoCal. Cheers!
@@sillly_nknm1599 good to know! gg
I run a set of these on my custom gravel bike that I just got earlier this week, been doing great so far on the road and the wet dirt and mud that I've been able to ride on so far. We're just getting a slightly warmer period (about 0-5C) after freezing and snow the past week so no dry conditions at all. Has been very confidence inspiring aside from sections where you'd need a car tyre to not start slipping about, even my old hardtail would've been struggling in some of the sections I've taken the bike through so far I wasn't even aware of this but they're supposed to be fully puncture protected even on the side walls, that's why they're so heavy. Big upside so far is they've been holding air tight, haven't even checked my tyre pressure since I've picked up the bike, my Revolt X needed to reinflate at least every other ride or twice a week because it was passively losing air that much
Are they? I did not know that, but I wonder why an X version exists if these are that burly? I do run other tires that are belted a bit but weigh less. However, weight is not as important as liking and trusting the tire when you use it. gg
I have one on my bike as well, and I'm the same... I will have them on ALL of my rigid bikes in the future! I can't actually feel them while riding, but they make a significant difference in impact into my hands and arms. I also have the Redshift Endurance seat post, and it's much the same.... I don't really "feel" it, but oh my does it reduce the impact to my ass and spine on harder hits! Well worth the money for this "old man".
I agree...the seatpost is huge in how much fatigue it saves! gg
The Cinturato Gravel H has a lower rolling resistance than the RC. I run a gravel H on the rear and a Gravel M on the front and find this to be an excellent combination.
Huh...interesting combo. Makes sense. gg
Do i hear 50? Awaiting delivery of a frame that i bought because it’s rated for 50’s and has plenty of clearance around that.
@@benconnor4848 nice. Which one? gg
I think this is a great review of that tire. I am a Pirelli tire fan all the way with them on all my bikes. My favorite is the gravel H in 45 which I find to be the fastest and most reliable tire out of the 20+ that I’ve tried. When I got my first gravel bike in 2020 I had a little bit of time in my hands so I just went tire crazy and was swapping tires every week until I found my glass slipper.
"Glass slipper"! Perfect! gg
Thank you. How does the RC compare to the M version? I would like to see a review of the Power Gravel, Power Adventure from Michelin reviewed. The Michelin are 47mm not 45mm, which I think is the real sweet spot for fast gravel. It would be appreciated to also see reviews of the Vittoria Mezcal in a 44mm(maybe vs the 2.1) and Vittoria Tereno Mix(and zero if you have time). The Tereno is offered in 45mm and 50mm sizes.
Never tried the M as it just did not seem like a tire for my use. I could be wrong. I try and review tires that seem like a good match. WoW! Quite a list. My credit card would be very afraid! But I will see what I can do at the next meeting of the tribe, Sea Otter Classic. gg
@@oldguyandabike I've seen folks in SoCal more on the M than the RC, but never had a chance to speak to any of them. They always seem to zippy. It's a big list, but you could choose just one that you like the most. That and we could ask these brands we want you to review these tires cause we trust your takes on them.
@@mellissanash7517 Well, Mellissa, I appreciate that faith in my reports! I'll take any suggestions from vendors that come along! gg
@ Thank you. Well the two tires I want to see reviewed the most I'd say then are the 44mm Mezcals and the M version to see how it compares to the RCs.
I run the new Mezcal XC race in 2.4 on my hardtail and so far I’m very impressed! But my terrain is very different from the one in the video. I am in the woods, can be a bit slippery sometimes and this tire works great.
Very helpful, thanks!
Thanks! It's all part of myself finding the right combo...I just put the WTB Vulpine S tires back on, but I have an even to coming up that might require a 50mm tire ...we shall see. gg
If your viewers want you to ride a tire for them, ask them to send them to you.
Jay, I like the way you think! Actually, Sea Otter is not that far away and it is the best place to meet, greet, and arrange things such as test tires. gg
I’ve had really good experience with the Cinturato Gravel M but then again I haven’t tried nearly as many tires as you have.
That looks to me to be a slow tire on pavement but I have heard quite the opposite. Perhaps I will get a hence to try them at some point. gg
It better be a great choice, I just mounted a set of them on my bike. :)
Hope you like them! gg
Schwalbe g one r
Noted. gg
Thank you for mentioning the rim internal width too. Very helpful. I have one wheel set 25mm internal and the other 21 mm. Oh how about seeing if you can can some Tufo tires. They are supposed be fast. Like their Thundero in 44 mm.
I know that a much faster friend of mine ran the Tufo tires in a 2.2, IIRC, at Mammoth Tuff for all that pumice. But he felt they were dogs on the road sections. But then, 2.2 is a pretty big tire when you are used to the response of a 45. So the 44s might be the ticket for my use. gg gg
My Conti Race King Protection in 650B 2.2" is 580g and 582g. They are lighter than what I had expected for a 2.2". But granted they are 650B so a 700C 2.2" would be slightly heavier. I looked at BRR and noticed that the typical gravel tire's casing would be around 2.6mm thick while the Race King is only 1.7mm. MTB tires don't need a thick casing due to them being run at lower pressures and lower pressures are a great flat protection. My other gravel tires that I use on packed dirt is the Conti Terra Speed in a 650B 40mm and they weigh 460g. The older generation of the Terra Speeds were super light, and I had one that was 404g. out of the box. But the older generation had a tendency to weep sealant and I think Conti eventually increased the casing thickness to increase robustness, and slapped on an E-25 designation. The older Terra Speed in a 700C 40mm weighed just 421g on my scale.
I have a set of 2.2 RKs in a box waiting for a bike that can fit them. Maybe this year. But weight does not tell the whole tale. A 2.2 compared to a 45mm tire will change a lot of things on a gravel bike, and the compromises need to be considered. But I remember running them on fast 29ers and they were just a stunner tire for speed. Hardly a trailbike tire, but back then we were all XC geeks anyway. gg
Did you size up, down or stay the same as your round chain ring?
I stayed the same as I did not want to introduce another variable. gg
I did back to back days, round/oval on the same climbs and did notice more consistant even power to the rear wheel with oval vs. round (and less fatigue as a result) Also less tire slipage/more even traction on the loose gravel surface I was riding. I think long 5 -10% grade climbs is where you really notice the benefit esp on loose surfaces. So I've been on oval ring for trailbikes ever since.
Agreed and that is a lot of SO Cal riding. Thanks! gg
Biopace.
Nice!
I'm 61, only ride mtb, and this is year 5 with an Absolute Black Oval. I use mtb on the same trails that I run on, as cross-training for trail running, and running in the Grand Canyon a couple times a year. It's completely changed my level of trail running fitness, and at the Grand Canyon, I've gone from "just surviving it" to running it as a speed run (I don't walk the ups, or use poles, I actually just run the whole thing). I built a 47lb downhill bike into my training rig, because I wanted something really heavy in order to get maximum beat-down on the long climbs. I rode it for a couple weeks with the round ring (I'd converted it to 1x ), so I knew how that felt, and then put the Absolute Black Oval on it. Night and day difference, and as you say, it's worth a gear in the back. I actually put old school climbing bars with the slight hook on the end, on the bars, and they're worth about half a gear. They allow me to really get up into the front of the bike, sort of in a road position, and put the power to the pedals. My knees are absolutely destroyed from a lifetime of having bowed legs (which wrecks the medial compartments of the knees) and I had both lower legs straightened in 2023. Knee pain is 99% gone at all times, I'm back to downhill skiing, still doing the big trail runs and the training for them, and absolutely flogging the brick of a training bike. The oval is a big part of the training equation. I actually have 2 much lighter mtbs (with AB ovals), one of which is carbon, but I'm always on the brick because it's just so much fun, and the rides are chaos! I'd be interesting if you put an AB Oval on one of your other bikes, and compared that to what you already use. They come in offsets, so you should be able to get your chainline happy.
Dude. Thanks so much for that response. You are crushing it! gg
@@oldguyandabikeIt's all smoke and mirrors.🙃
You nailed it GG, oval rings help get you over the hump. I’ve been using a Rotor oval for 10yrs on my single speed MT, 26” and 29” , rigid and hardtail, Ti and carbon frames. New bike Ti Turner Gila, which is awesome. For me I can run a bigger chainring in oval form v’s round (2 tooth) it’s like gaining extra speed with no extra training. 💯 % correct on the differences in ovalation by different manufacturers. I still remember when you liked the Spot single speed bike. Thanks for your UA-cam channel. Cheers 🍻
Oh man...you go back to the Spot Bikes era...SS and belt drive! Fun bikes. Seems like Gates is still around and I think Pinion Drive and a belt is compelling for some riding. Now it is making an inroad into DH racing! Takes unsprung weight off the rear wheel. Do you actually get a 2 tooth 'gain' in the oval! I might try that and see. Would like to have a 40T again for some things. But not for others. gg
Oval rings are larger at the peek rotation and smaller at that dead spot. I remember Rotor claiming that there rings are like riding a bigger gear than the teeth count, 2-3 teeth difference. 🤷♂️
@@davidbolam71 Interesting. gg
No difference I find with oval ring. A lot more comfort with shorter crank
I’m fine with my oval on my hardtail Mtn bike. As for gravel, I haven’t tried it but would definitely choose a Garbaruk. My gravel has the Garbaruk 11-46t cassette, love it. My next purchase is going to be a Garbaruk XC crank with a 28t chainring for a new hardtail build.
@@hardmtnbiker I have been pretty pleased with my Garbaruk 10-52 cassette. I like the 10-48 option. That would be killer for a 1x all road bike with a 46T front ring gg
@ what I have been doing for my 1X gravel is switching between the 44T when it’s mostly flat or 38T or lower when it’s steep climbing. I’m using the GRX 11spd group. Perhaps I would get the long Gabaruk pulley cage if I were to use the Gabaruk 11-50
I'm and old guy too. Sold on oval chainrings for single chainring systems and shorter cranks too. Gave up on double road setups unfortunately, dropped too often. Cheers from Italy
Hey! Greetings, to Italy! Spent some time cycling around the Tuscany area...Ciao! gg
Really interesting, I may try one out on my all road bike project, that I’m currently building up. It will be a 1x drive train. Thanks gg👍
Do that...see what you think! gg
Interesting insight. I'm more of a spinner (~90 rpm); perhaps oval is not for me.
Yeah...perhaps not. It's not like you can't but you need to really pay attention. gg
I've a 36 oval ring on my titanium gravel bike which I normally use when I bikepack....it is so much easier on my legs/knees when the bike is loaded. I certainly think it suits me. I've just bought a 38 oval chainring for a route im planning to undertake in a month or so....which is going to be hilly......
Nice. gg
I got oval rings on all my bikes .. even my cargo bike 😁 10 years ago, I got the first oval ring on my mountainbike .. and never looked back. On step gnarly single track it gives better traction og easier pedal rotation over the top of the stroke. You can simply climb stuff better. Same with gravel, and the added benefit of not suffering so hard when climbing on endless fire roads .. in head wind. When I build my road bike 6 years ago I made it 1-by with an oval ring. The only downside is that you might have to change the ring or cassette sometimes depending on the terrain you ride. I'll never go back to round rings or have a front shifter again 😁
That was where I noticed it the most. What gearing do you run on the road bike? I still might try it, but I/m not sure if I could get away with a single ring. gg
@ I’m and old guy too (67) and live in a relatively flat country, I run 44T and 11-32. I can climb all hills here and never spin out. But on a bike trip to Spain I switched the cassette to 11-40. That worked perfectly in the Spanish mountains. The only time it’s not optimal is if you train with a group. Following others doing high speed intervals can require a closer ratio on the cassette in some cases.
@@sorensvendsencom Nice. gg
I use oval rings I tried to go back to round let me tell you what you are experiencing is real, the round to me is fatiguing and does not agree with me. I do come from an Mtb background, my thought is that the slight pull on the round over long rides or climbs causes the fatigue but that is MHO.
It feels real. It just took me a while to get it figured out. Thanks! gg
same here: less pain in knees, easier going over the top of the pedal... I'm combining oval chainring with slightly shorter cranks. In technical climbs on MTB, the advantage is even more obvious.
I bet it is! The bikepacking MTB bike is next for sure. gg

@@stevemartinez9075 in the video I stated it was a Garbaruk. It’s a 38T as was the round one it replaced. gg
Interesting insight. And maybe something to try on the 1x roadbike I'm planning. Will it make a difference? As my dad used to say, I'll just have to "suck it and see."
@@BrianRPaterson I do think there is a lot of individual preference here. gg
I haven’t ridden an oval chainring since DiamondBack was calling them “Biopace” gears back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I couldn’t tell a difference between oval or round. Everything felt the same, but my knees were also in their 20’s back then.
That was a Shimano thing but the polar opposite of this. It was emulating a bigger ring in the opening of the power stroke position, not a smaller one...if that makes sense. gg
@@oldguyandabike Yes that makes sense. My quiver only has 2 bikes--an enduro MTB and a gravel bike that has to do everything from road to forest service roads, which is why I put a 42 tooth ring up front and a 52-10 cassette in the back. There have been some high teen, low twenties percent grades where I wished for fewer teeth up front. I'll have to investigate these oval rings. I just assumed they were the same as the ones from 35 years ago--what's old is new.
@@oldguyandabike Yep, and those things were "the thing" until they weren't. Same with Shimano's U-brake. Marketing-marketing-marketing since Shimano had patents on both. Oddly enough, by the time the patents expired, nobody else jumped onto the Biopace or U-brake bandwagon. Hint: when you get your seatpost where you want it, do the old-time thing and put a piece of tape on it so you can a) see if it slips b) easily put it back to where it was.
@@larryt.atcycleitalia5786 Yeah, I had it taped but the post was slipping enough to wrinkle the tape up and I think I just 'lost the line'. Good tips though! Old dogs...old tricks. gg
@@zimmejoc Yeah...quite different. Give it a go! gg
Can you tell us the internal rim width you mounted these tires on? Thanks
@@shawnsken01 I can. 24mm hooked. gg
@@oldguyandabike Thanks... going to give them a try to handle Vancouver Island logging roads!
@@shawnsken01 Sounds like a great place for them. Look at the 50s if they will fit! gg
Nice video, thanks.
You are welcome. Many, many mikes later I am still a fan. gg
What Compressor brick would you recommend?
Are you referring to a garage type unit like the one I use to inflate tires? t was one by Fantikk. It was a media sample, but I love that thing. gg
@@oldguyandabike Yeah the one you used in the video. Is that Fantikk?
@@jarednelson4272it is. A couple years old now. Still working well. gg
I only use my Shokz for navigation while riding.
Great videos look like your getting in shape
@@MikeF-i1w trying to. Being retired helps keep some consistency. gg
Nice to see lots of bikes coming out that are long and low. New bikes from Ridley, 3cm longer in reach and 2cm lower stack, is the best of the lot. But colnago joining cervelo and Bianchi with some bikes to fit real riders. Now if the prices could come down 😂
Yeah...that would be nice. Unlikely, but nice. gg
I enjoyed listening to the gravel crunching under my tires; that my music.
Yeah not the greatest sounding headset but definitely the best for running an cycling. Not great for audio books but the generally work well for music. 🎵 nice to get over about 25kmh the wind noise becomes a problem for audiobooks books but tolerable for music. When it comes the the Shokz Open Pro is get the smaller version as it fits better/ closer to the neck
Agreed! gg
Love bone conduction shockz, and it is better than the people who mount a bluetooth speaker and blast their music for all to hear. I've looked at those ear hook ones that aren't bone conduction, but are worried they will block too much ambient noise. Sounds like Tozo just wanted to steal your personal information When my sweat destroys my current shockz, I'll give these a try.
Yeah....that is bad form for any group ride. gg
I think I’d rather listen to the manufacturer than a individual explaining his views this light bulb effect is not in cars so consider this zipp and the tyre manufacturers and the wheel manufacturer are in design together especially zipp so I’d rather listen to the advise then a old guy thanks
Good to mention the brain capacity issue for safe hearing. That said, I find the Shokz do a great job of delivering clear sound (I’m less picky about tone since I’m usually listening to podcasts) without preventing good acoustical situational awareness when used at moderate volume. If one TRIES to hear them over high speed wind noise (descents), they start to prevent good perception and that’s a bad idea. I’m a firm believer in knowing where the pause button is in those times. FWIW, here in California, as far as I read the law, these are legal to use on the road because they are neither in nor covering your ears. But I would not be surprised to have an officer not accept that argument. So ride at one’s own legal jeopardy 😏. Then again, in over 40 years of riding with various headphones (many a poor choice in hindsight) I’ve never had a discussion about them with an officer. YMMV
Huh...yes, I too would be surprised to have that noticed by a LEO, but I suppose it could happen. Good mention! gg
I have the shockz open fit and they are perfect! Use them for running, cycling and walking my dogs. They are so light you don‘t feel them at all.
Agreed...if I had seen the new version of the OpenFit ones that have buttons, I would have likely chosen those, but timing, etc. However, you can't lose just one of the OpenRun style! Big, orange thing! gg
I have had aftershokz for 3 years. They are the best. Not only do they work great on a bike, they are extremely durable. The battery lasts for my longer rides of 5 hours. They allow me to stay engaged with my environment as long as I don’t turn them up too high. That new dual driver model looks great too!
Its worth the upgrade iMO! gg
Luv my Shokz playing quiet background tunes and the fact I can still hear the tires, shifting, other riders etc.
Yep. gg
Nice report! Glad that conversion is working out. There are probably lots of folks who could convert an old hard tail this way. Thanks!
I agree! Lot's of good candidates out there. gg
That Basso SV even has UDH. They should market that louder! 😅 Whatever, it looks beautiful! The first glimpse at the geometry chart scared me, but then I saw how compact the integrated handlebar is and how it even has a back sweep. Definitely makes my short list!
Yeah, it is a stunner. gg
I’ve bought and sold so many bikes for no good reason it’s crazy. I finally got a custom steel all road bike built for my 50th birthday and guess what!?! I’m selling it! 🤣
Oh no! Well, at least you tried it out. gg
