My dad was born in 1899 at 446 W 42nd St. which is between 9th and 10th. He saw Houdini perform, saw Rudolph Valentino in his coffin, went to the Hippodrome for shows. He always intriduced himself as a native New Yorker, never lost his NYC accent even though he moved to Los Angeles for a job in 1935... seeing what 42nd st had become in 1980 on his last visit there deeply upset him. I guess he'd like what it is now a bit more, but I enjoy any glimpse of the old days, back to what it was during his lufetime, a clean but bustling neighborhood with German and Irish families. Thanks for posting!

Love your videos and this is also well produced. However, I loved the counterpoint of the Fearless Girl standing up to the bull. It looks lost without purpose at its new home in front of the NYSE.

The name comes the folk tale The Wise Men of Gotham, in which the residents of the village of Gotham pretend to be fools to avoid the wicked king's wrath. It was a sort of backhanded compliment for what Irving saw as New Yorkers' foolish ingenuity/ingenious foolishness. You'll find a few versions online if you Google the title.

At the risk of getting banned from UA-cam I need to write this. I think that this display is more stupid than brave. Ask any Matador or cattle driver. Standing defiantly in front of a 2000 pound animal with horns is suicide. Even if the kid were armed with a loaded shotgun, she wouldn't have a prayer.

A little girl, overconfident and stupid, getting herself killed by a large a powerful animal. What exactly is the message here? Nature can't be overcome, we only trick ourself into risking our Life? I don't think the Girl can be a stand in for anything else but a defenseless victim. Why exactly she is fearless in such a position escapes me. The Bull, a symbol of hope, of fighting through hardship, has been turned into a bad guy. A force that prays on defenseless victims.

New York City is the blueprint for every city that sprang up after. It is also the blueprint of all of our financial institutions, museums, our parks. New York holds the title of many "firsts" of everything! Even though I wasn't born in New York, I still say "I love New York"! Especially the Brownstones! I love seeing inside one that hasn't been changed too much. I'm all for preserving the original! Why do people want to completely erase the original interior of a Brownstone, I will never understand? People, it's called preservation!

  • @schrodingersjet1043

I always thought brownstones had several steps up, not because of filth in the street, but because no one wants pedestrians to be able to look directly into your residence. Maybe both reasons?

Who wouldn’t want the servants quarters to stay the same!? I would keep the servants quarters and exact layout but updated it with modern kitchen appliances. The dumb waiter is a plus! Keep it and put it to use. Why would anyone want to change the original floor plan. I hope someone bought it and kept it to its original with a touch of updates. I want to see more of this beautiful gem. Thank you for sharing.

<-- I’m the wife, my husband and I just watched the classic movie Life with Father. I was telling him what the home the movie is depicted in is worth today, he couldn’t believe it! I love the look of the late 19th early 20th centuries Brownstone homes, much more character and warmth! They way people modernize with funky lighting, everything grey, metal and cold! Ugh it’s criminal! My Mama was raised in upstate New York, in a Victorian home. Her father worked in Grand Central Station, she and her Mama, and older sister would ride the train into the city for free and go shopping and to shows at Radio City.

The statue ought to be called "Clueless Girl". Whether she's fearless or not, that bull is going to turn her into a pile of shredded pulp in about five seconds. When I first heard of this statue I just laughed. The artist has obviously never been to a cattle farm.

@@dantaereacts2365 Oh, I don't know. Maybe because it was New York and slavery wasn't widespread there. Or maybe because it was a Dutch colony, and the Dutch were known for religious tolerance. Do you ever read a book or do you just spew ignorance wherever you go? Or are you just another Lefty or Black that is obsessed with race and can't see anything but race?

I just heard about this in the Bowery Boys podcast, I thought the bull had been there for many more decades. I don't personally love the fearless girl as art, but as you say it was commissioned by a good old boys club as an advertisement. It kind of is what it is. Move it, that's fine, and then some artist should create something more striking in it's place.

Terrible hate propaganda ! Robert E. Lee was an abolitionist. He freed slaves that his parents owned. His wife also taught blacks Sunday School which was discouraged. He fought for the South because barbaric Northern Army attacked the South ! Any man has a right to defend himself from an invasion !
