The documentary follows the real-life struggle of converting the UK’s first fishing boat to solar and electric power to fish at a competitive and commercial level.
It's set on Scotland’s West coast in the scenic and alluring Argyll village of Tayvallich. Over the course of almost a year it runs with the highs, lows and challenges related to the venture as well as the determination and skillset of the builder and skipper.
The young local director Joe Osborn has skilfully engrained the seasonal moods, the strong local community spirit and the Argyll way of doing things into a comfortably paced compelling story of our times. One fisherman’s conviction towards the carbon free future we all need to embrace. A small film, but a powerful one.
It is a true story, a drama, a documentary, a visual spectacular, a thriller, an action movie, a comedy, a snapshot of real life, a feel good as well as tragedy and an environmental statement all set in the West Coast of Scotland's fishing industry.

A practical demonstration of an all electric lobster potting boat. Hauling, towing, weather and other daily functions. This short is intended to show the capabilities and restrictions of working an all electric fishing vessel. Currently the boat is fully certified and fishing at a commercial level on the west coast of Scotland. For full info and more films go to www.itllneverwork.boats
I truly hope you do not create an electric fishing boat. You burn coal or oil to get the electricity or am I confused? They have these things called oars.
Amazing video. Before you converted, what percent of your daily expenses was for diesel? After you converted, what is it now?
Ok

An all electric fishing boat!!!? It's like we're living in Donald Trump's worst nightmare!
And you're not breathing diesel fumes all day. I hate that.
ON THE WATER WITH NO FUEL SMELL & NO NOISE!!! a more chill pace of fishing = less stress on the fisherman and fish stocks get a better chance to rebound
very pretty boat
Remarkable 😊
We done sir your totally inspired fantastic great idea as ex boat man my self great 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Like to see you fix it at sea if your boat breaks in the ocean your done gaurantee 5 to 10 years you will be using deisel that boat takes on water your done i can think of so many situations that happens at sea that will knock out e boat but deisel either could be fixed or wouldnt effect it might be ok for this guy to run a boat like this but not going to be viable for most boats
Bruuh u should solar a houseboat so ucan enjoy life on the go. Da boat too small.
Stupid idea
He should go completely green and buy a sailboat
What was the cost of the power system?
Please give credit to the work of the musician you are using in the videos, do not plagiarise!
Thanks, Will do, it's a guy that stays 5 houses up from me, he's done the whole feature film soundtrack aswell on itllneverwork.boats/thefilm
Fucking tree huggers
What is all the fuss about? At the end of the day fossil fuels will be with us for a long while more until someone comes up with another really reliable energy resource.
Just what I've been looking for. I'm going to be converting a Western Australian 12mtr Aluminium Cray (Lobster) Boat to elec (+ sail), for blue water cruising, the deck being the main living/patio area under the panels, vs most boats having small outdoor areas. It's great you get up to 90% funding. I can get it for my house, not boat (honestly). Q; How's the input benefit from down facing panels from water reflection? Apparently due to installer weight considerations, these panels have 3mm glass each side, vs standard having 6mm on top, which could be a concern with hail storms, or even walking on them for cleaning bird shiet, etc. That Gemini looks a nice cat, not seen one before.
Solid cater batees 150 mooes 37.5 mile rsnge
There may also be certain lobster buyers (i.e., restaurants, hotels, resorts, etc.) who want to offer seafood harvested without fossil fuels. This could be a niche market that helps offset costs and insulate fishermen from price fluctuations. The lower production might also be argued (marketed) to be more sustainable to the consumer.
Cool AF!! I can see the future in your Lorna Jane!!
you're saying 1 gallon of gas is 4.5x more power density than the same size battery, and that is supposed to show how inefficient diesel is? Are you just wilfully ignorant, or dumb?
Gonna have far more issues than an ic engine. Sounds like a straight bad idea
How? Especially for his semi-retired requirements. Plenty boats have converted to all elec now, especially blue water cruisers. This vid is just one example
Nice little boat. It's just nice to see how much power you need and what these Panels already provide. Batteries and motor/controllers will get cheaper and battery/solar will be the standard for coastal vessels and ferries soon.
That’s fine if the sun is shinning, what about a week of rain and clouds
He literally told & showed you @4:23. Just like a house, at times solar will always require some form of grid or generator backup if weather is poor.
do u know what a battery is?
Cheap Chinese junk...
Hell no no way. Former USCG.
Only having 60 miles of range and relying on the sun to recharge your boat is a fantastic way to get stranded 80 miles offshore. No commercial fisherman is going to buy this electric bullshit. You’ll be out of business within the next 10 years if you keep this up.
so no sun and your out all day poor weather? battery for a boat is a no go !! for a boat around 12 to 20 ton your wee boat might weigh 2.2 ton diesel is king! and always will be!!
Hybride
He said he still has 50% when he gets back. Can charge off grid at dock if required. What do you do if the diesel shiets itself? Lead base petrol through a V8 carburettor was King before that, but wasn't any good for us or our grandkids either

@@Lana_Warwick little boat not going far ! bigger boat needs diesel battery no good! battery cars fine for an old lady going to the shop no use if you have to travel a long way in the snow? they have not put enough thought in to it and it wont work you need heaters in a car for a start battery will not last at sea you need diesel battery will not work wast of time this planet needs coal and petrol and diesel who can afford to heat there house with eletric? no body unless your rich
@@Lana_Warwick is he hauling 900 pots per day? dont think so!! hes playing at it !
90 percent subsidy. So where does that come from? The people using fuel that's who! No wonder your smiling.
I prefer a real boat with 5000 miles of range.
Hybrude hydergen😅
Well colour me impressed! Your small trawler is a "flagship" (if you will pardon the pun) for electrical re-fitment. I am of the opinion that £137,000 is *TOO MUCH* for what you had installed. The 20kW + ESC is fine, the Victron equipment is excellent. Your batteries could have been *much cheaper* if you had raw 16x3.2V/340Ah LiFePO4 cells with 100A BMS installed. £680 = 16x320Ah/3.2V (16.384kWh) Solar panels should now be about £100 for 500W each. Golden Motors also has some excellent marine motors at very good prices (perhaps 2 x 10kW motors - 1 for backup)
Where did you get the 137K figure from? Was it just for the off-grid components, or the entire refit incl, removal of engine, tanks, lines, etc, etc? I agree re batteries, however it's likely an insurance requirement for his 'commercial operation', especially if he employs deckhands. I've got a 15kWh Gobel Power unit with built in extinguishers (~4Kau), insurance Co wont consider it unless Gobel fork out Big $ to get put on a list of approved suppliers🤷♀ If ever required, I'd use the tender outboard as redundancy.
@@Lana_Warwick It's posted on their website! It shows more details.
Im happy to see this electric application to semi industrial operations in stead of cars.
yeah - for a little while - and while x speed = distance
As a fisherman I wouldn’t have it as a gift when in trouble no reserves limited us cornwall rains months on end
And your tax money are paying for it. 90% subsidy and all.
What reserve/backup do you have when the diesel shiets itself?
@@Lana_Warwick What reserve/backup do you have when the Electric shiets itself? Electric is not 100% reliable yet. Too many electronic components in the system. As I have found to my cost.
@@tmog1000 Didn't answer the Q I asked. Only negging elec, when both can & do have issues. So whatever your answer to my Q is, it's prob similar to mine
Bueno job bueno…..what a platform for propeller evaluation.!
Hey Hans its yer cousin Rab..good job mate.
So great to see someone going green in the industry Keep up the great work ❤❤
Solar panels and batteries are not a green as you think.
Stop commercial fishing of open waters, if you want to save the planet and want to lobster, farm them like all other sustainable products.
Farming is bad. They use antibiotics on the fish. It's about as nasty as chicken ranches. I live in a yurt on a small mountain farm and have four fish ponds plus I garden. I never had kids either. Kids are the worst on the environment! 😅 Im a small impact footprint but not many ca do this... way too much work!
@@astrophelhart3806 Nothing incomparison to the damage open water commercial fishing does to not just target product but the massive bycatch discarded that die,the commercial fisherman claim the majority survive, studies show a different story.
8x400W, 3.2kwp? That boats needs min. 20kw power for moving, so best case you get 1:10 motor running time. Not viable for work.
NO!!! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!! Nonsense is what this is
Lol, Plenty of NO's, no explanation of nonsense in what way? This is just one example, plenty of it out there now. Not suitable if you want to push 10+ knots all day, but good enough for him & any others, incl plenty of BWCs
Very cool. Hope it becomes more affordable.
itllneverwork.boats/thefilm The whole story. This blockbuster sellout movie made entirely in Argyll by locals is developing cult status. 😊 Best Story for 2024 john from PNG, GOT 6. fb 36 feet in my yard, ocean runners, all hauls in great shape. will enquire with UK 🇬🇧 Embassy for technical aid, I've got the sun, but the duel sided solarpannel captured my attention, the glare from the sea on a calm day is strong, happy I can now capture. Thankyou. muchlove. ❤ marianbros Pt, Jms & jn. EndTimes preparation.
Very impressive setup. Bravo Zulu for pushing the carbon zero fishing idea. Subscribed.
I’ve been barking up that tree going back to 1995, over the road truck trailers train box cars and ocean liners can be fitted with enough solar to run on an overcast day and charge batteries, I’ve done the math of square footage of solar and watts produced…nice job👍
You’re so right! Embrace the future or get left behind. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻👍🏻
Two words……….redundant systems.
Yep! Are you suggesting one does it better than the other?
Hope the sun doesn’t go out, you might not get home
Huh?🤔He said he gets home with 50% battery remaining, + not many lobster boats coming home in the dark, going out maybe. Plus when does the sun "go out"?
@@Lana_Warwick you know the electric vehicle scam is all bs. Look at the real cost to produce one, don’t get sucked in sweetheart
What a load of nonsense. Yeah right, I’m going to go to sea and put my life in the hands of solar panels 😂
Plenty of us doing it, incl plenty of BWC youtube channels. Can have issues with engines & fuel. The sun will eventually appear on those panels to power a motor.
@@Lana_Warwick 😂 Sure you are.
@@Lana_Warwick Hopefully the ocean won’t rise up and kill you before the sun comes out 🙄
Keep it up my friend. You are what’s pushing the future of boating.
