Hello, good afternoon, this version is performed by the orchestra, it does not appear in the description
What can I say? One genius' version of another genius' work?
I love these old Gennadi recordings. So much character!
Muchas gracias.
Really terrible what Mahler did to the Finale and Scherzo. Unbelievable. Why did he do this?
Mahler used the only published edition available at the time and Franz Schalk had already cut the Scherzo. The cuts in the second and fourth movements were by Mahler. He told his wife that Bruckner was half genius and half idiot, so it seems that Mahler's early enthusiasm for Bruckner waned as he got older.
As the second movement I find myself thinking of the new Linz cathedral, which has a 'Bruckner' window. This cathedral was built under the auspices of Bruckner's patron Archbishop Rudigier.
More like the 'Original Franz Schalk Version' .. 🤣
But without triangle and cymbals
El final apoteosico
Nice forceful timpani playing at the last coda at the very end of the Symphony
the orchestra is the State Symphony Capella of Russia? or Vienna Symphony?

You can hear Rozhdestvenskys Glazunovs sound here, with the prominent woodwinds and strident brass. Some lovely pizzicato detailing in the slow movement. Yes it's rough round the edges, still prefer Eugen Jochum which I first heard as an awed teenager, but it is loveable and human. I think I'll be adding this to my collection.
Well done for putting this up. The 1873 version is so little known and yet is superior in so many ways. GR is a fave of mine and I like hearing a Russian's take on bruckner. Eliahu inbal also does a fine version of this, that's how I first heard it, as part of inbals set of the original versions. Some of those are better left unplayed but the third is an exception. The more bruckner did with it, the worse it got. It is his true unfinished symphony!
Great to hear a Russian doing bruckner. There's much about him that is Russian rather than Austrian. Rozhdestvensky has always been a favourite of mine, he Introduced me to Glazunovs symphs. The Russian brass is something you just have to get used to, asi did whilst collecting obscure soviet symphonies. Bravo.
Sehr gut
Love this version, somehow sounds mysterious.
The best recording of this whole cycle.
too loud, the tones still need to breathe. it is too brutal, i am not a fan of this. music i a very fine art and i feel like the trumpets and the trombones, also the horns destroy it.. what a pity. it should never end in such a sensless competition between those men, who only try to manage to play louder than the colleges! also in fff
The ending to the first movement is Rock Solid !!!!
It's always interesting to hear a composer's later thoughts on an accomplished masterpiece, but I prefer the unrevised Linz version of 1866.
Curiously interesting but easily no match whatsoever to the original rendition by the incomparable Bruckner.
The original 1873 is sufficiently different to the 1878 and its alternate 1889 form to be a separate work; it looks to Schubert with a more detailed flow and less of the steady tread and comprises a transitional work more than the previous two stylistically more mature symphonies. Rozh has a secure understanding of early Bruckner with his _Student symphony_ and _Zero_ being definitive and there are links here with those; he’s also alive though to the emerging Bruckner power and remorselessness with superb strings passion, transparent terracing, great tempos to let breathe, and overall architecture, luminous results, superbly inside the idiom in another landmark recording. Much preferable to the crazily sleepy Tintner although the Nagano performance with the French Radio PO is superior with its much brisker tempos and Schubertian contours.
I quite like it
I love their wild brass and woodwind section. Ok it's a rough round the edges, but it's exciting. It does suffer from Roshdestvensky's erratic interpretation..
Amazing! A Symphonic Odissey!

Great version! Wonderfull recording!
A beautiful performance. GR takes this symphony more seriously than most with slower tempi. It is now an important work not just a student exercise.
Linz version is 1877. 1866 is the original version
The unrevised 1866 score is the First Linz version. The 1877 score is the revised Linz version which was made after Bruckner moved to Vienna. But since his final 1890 revision was also made in Vienna, the 1877 score is called the Linz version.
Extraordinary sound!
Original version? Definitely not.
