Under $100 Remote “wired” electric throttle for a 6 hp Evinrude/Johnson
I was looking for a way to add a remote electric throttle to my 1978 Evinrude 6 hp. I couldn’t find anything that would work with this old of a motor so I built it! I added up the cost and it’s just under up $100! Hope this can help someone, happy boating!

    thank you so much. just bought an 83 9.9 and I'm changing the water pump this weekend. Do I need to lubricate either end of the drive shaft when I reinstall everything?

      A little bit of grease on the splines on the part of the shaft that connects to the motor isn’t a bad idea. It helps displace water to keep it rust free.

    Thanks found try the detailed video. I never would have attempted the rebuild without it. Hardest part for me was reinstalling the starter, getting that tab in the hole without the spring coming apart.

    i appreciate your videos... i was able to check and verify that I have spark to both plugs from your other video.... I also have verified fuel going to the carb.... but no pop of any kind when I try to start the motor... does that indicate that I may have a gunked up card/jet, and need to rebuild it? or chemically clean it? thanks for you no-nonsense videos. ;o)

    Wonderful video. I would’ve been lost without it. However, I noticed that when putting on the final metal plate with the “U”, the orientation changes from 19:19 when you show the finished assembly to when you install it on the motor at 19:36. I originally had it installed like it was at 19:19 but then switched it to how you have it on the motor because this seems correct. Just an FYI for you and anyone else using this video to get the correct orientation that this minute detail was not acknowledged. Thanks!

    Thank you for being so thorough. When I ohm tested my primary coils, they both read exactly 0.2. It’s at the very bottom of the range but technically is good? Is that something to worry about or is good? Thanks.

    Setting idle in neutral will get you close to where you want to be...but to fully dial in idle engine needs to be in gear lowest throttle. Setting in neutral typically will be too low once shifted to fwd gear. Easy to do wharf side, secure bow & stern lines to cleats, start & warm engine to operating temps, few minutes, in neutral. Gently seat Idle screw, then out 1.5 turns. With boat secured, shift into fwd gear, the engine should sound close to stall, with typical 2 stoke low speed wobble n shake. The goal is to have engine near edge of stall in gear, then when shifted into neutral idle will rise somewhat. Too high idle in gear leads will lead to excessive rpm when shifted in neutral, and hard on bottom end when shifting in gear, clucks, etc. Next step is to dial in idle bit further, when in-gear give short quick twist throttle to wide open and back to idle...see if engine stalls, snorts or pops, stumbles. Important to do this step as it's common while underway to give quick short throttle twists and you don't want low speed stalls in around wharfs while docking boat or approaching other boats...then quickly trying to restart engine before bumping into whatever. If doing this in-gear test, the engine snorts, flops & stalls after quick throttle twist, rich up (more) the idle screw setting slightly, until engine can accept short burst and back to idle without stalling or stumbling. Do this a few times, shift back to neutral...then back in gear. Don't be too worried about engine looking and sounding rough at idle in gear, that's what 2 strokes do at low rpms. One should be careful not to rich up idle speed unnecessarily for a snappy throttle response as that can promote fouling of spark plugs. This process can be done in test tank of sufficient size, or large barrel... too small a barrel you'll soon find yourself with wet shoes and bucket half empty, that's why tieing boat to wharf is ideal. After initial set up go test on water, get lean/rich set nicely for idle and snappy response outta the hole. Before any if that, the usual "givens" apply ... aim for ethanol free fuels, often supreme grade, correct oil mix ratio for model, clean fuel tank, open air screw fuel cap, intact fuel lines, good clean in-line filters if applicable, and clean, good condition spark plugs with correct gap. Attempting to set idle without those givens can/will hamper your attempts at setting idle speeds. If you fish and troll often at low speeds... be sure to run boat briefly at or near wot speeds around the bay end of the day ... keep those plugs clean....and it's darn fun too. 👍🏻✌🏻

    Engine dying when put in gear? Pump or carbie?

    • @wetshoesmechanic
      @wetshoesmechanic 4 місяці тому

      I would start with the carburetor. Rotate your slow speed needle valve clockwise until it seats. Do not force it. Once it seats rotate it counterclockwise 1.5 turns and try that. You may have to fine-tune it after that, but that should allow it to run at least. Make sure the idle adjustment screw on the side of the motor is turned up high enough to allow it to idle at a reasonable RPM. If after all of that, you suspect fuel delivery problem, I would verify that your fuel line is in good shape and flowing fuel freely to the fuel pump. Also, make sure that the vent in your fuel tank is working properly. If needed, after all of that, I would throw in a carb rebuild kit, and plan on doing your fuel pump also. Keep in mind there are other considerations that could be a problem. These are the simplest things to fix, but there is also throttle linkage timing, reed valves, cylinder compression, and making sure the gearbox is free to move to consider also.

    I have a 1976 Evinrude we have used for years (since new)........never have changed the water pump :/ maybe we should?

    • @wetshoesmechanic
      @wetshoesmechanic 4 місяці тому

      The impeller is pretty cheap, and just to be on the safe side. I would change it out at least every couple years. Even if it’s not weather checked, or falling apart, the fins lose their elasticity over the years and you will lose water pressure over time. If you wait too long, the impeller blades can start deteriorating and falling apart and once that happens, they get into the waterways inside the block, and they become problematic to get out later.

    Absolutely great video. Thank you very much. Just rebuilt my fuel pump. Question. I squeeze the bulb and I cannot seem to eliminate all the air bubbles out of the line. The bulb gets rock hard and stays rock hard when engine is running. Could it be a defective bulb? Any other causes for the air bubbles?

    • @wetshoesmechanic
      @wetshoesmechanic 4 місяці тому

      If you’re having trouble with air getting into your fuel line, I would check your connection points at the fuel tank, and at the engine, mainly the O-ring in the fitting. If your fuel lines, or bulb are old and weathered, I would replace them. Even a small compromise in your fuel line could introduce air into the system. Question though, how do you know you have air bubbles in your fuel line? What are the symptoms?

    I bought a shop manual for mine, and it contains dire warnings about not removing the drive shaft, else you will need to disassemble the lower unit in order to realign the pinion gear. And of course, I accidentally pulled it out a few inches while trying to clean off the shaft. Now sitting here wondering if I need to tear it all apart, then I find this video where you remove the shaft and reinstall like it is no big deal. Wondering what I am missing.

    • @wetshoesmechanic
      @wetshoesmechanic 4 місяці тому

      It’s possible the pinion gear shifted inside the gearbox just enough to make the shaft Alignment tough. With a flashlight try to look down the hole and with a pick, or even a stiff metal rod you can try to realign it enough for the shaft to fall into the gear. I’ve never had trouble with the 15 hp, but I have struggled with a 2 hp that has this problem. Worst case scenario you might have to pull the gearbox end off to get in there to realign the gear. It’s not too bad if you have to get into that.

    • @netpackrat
      @netpackrat 4 місяці тому

      @@wetshoesmechanic Thank you for the reply. I had tried to put the shaft back in, and it would shift into reverse but not forward. On the advice of another friend, I turned the shaft slowly while trying to shift it into forward, and it eventually went. I put it back together and it seems to be working fine now. The manual I bought is horrible; tries to cover decades worth of motors and jumps around a lot. I would have been better off going straight to UA-cam. It's an old motor that used to belong to my dad... After he passed over 20 years ago, I had the local outboard shop winterize it, then I packed it in a crate. I hadn't planned on leaving it there quite this long, but with new plugs, new water pump, and fresh gear lube it appears to be good to go again.

    So i opened up my lower unit on my 1974 evinrude 15hp and there want like oily milky stuff everywhere. what is it. i cleaned it once put it back on and took it back off and it was there again. so what is this stuff.

    • @wetshoesmechanic
      @wetshoesmechanic 5 місяців тому

      If the oil in the lower unit is milky, you have a bad seal somewhere and water is trying to mix with the oil. There is a seal on the input shaft going into the lower unit, there’s also a O-ring seal around the shifting shaft, coming out of the lower unit, and then you have the output shaft seal going to the propeller. If you have it all apart to the point of replacing the water pump parts, I would suggest replacing all of the before mentioned seals. You might look at the prop shaft seal. Sometimes you can pick up fishing line and it will cut that seal up as it twists around the shaft. You can also drain the lower unit while it’s off of the rest of the motor, put one of the plugs for the oil back in, and hook up some compressed air to the one that’s left open, spray a little Windex around all the seals and see if you can get one to start bubbling. Don’t use any more than a few Psi when doing this.

    • @tylerchambers5077
      @tylerchambers5077 5 місяців тому

      I drained the gear oil and it wasn’t milky at all. i think it might be a seal under the impeller housing. could that be the one i need to replace?

    • @wetshoesmechanic
      @wetshoesmechanic 5 місяців тому

      If the oil in the gearbox looks good, I think you’re OK. If you have milky oily, residue outside of the gearbox up around the water pump, it’s probably just water left over mixed with exhaust oil. The exhaust on two strokes will have some unburnt oil mix with it. If you’re not sure, put your finger in it and smell it. If it smells like gas a little, it’s exhaust oil. If it smells skunky it will be gear oil.
