Brief Video of callin' coyotes. I had two dogs come in to my rabbit in distress call, but alas, they wouldn't come in to close range. I was able to sneak up a little bit closer and get footage of the howler! He probably howled back for a good 45 minutes. Sorry for the shaky quality near the end.

I own not only an eTrex 10, but also the legendary Garmin 45 from the 80ies, the ForeTrex 401, and the GPSMAP 67. I strongly disagree for me, personally. At first, knowing your position is almost useless. You need an additional map, and good luck with transferring the ° and ' or UTM-coordinates to the position there. Then, you cannot store and thus refer to waypoints if you haven't been there. Same for tracks. BaseCamp is not a solution, because the maps there are also useless. You cannot plan a trip, or, perhaps you go to the internet, find an online map,, and type in the coordinates into your eTrex. For eTrex-owners: On the internet, you can find numerous pages with instructions, how to load OSM maps into BaseCamp. That will help, of course, although it is a bit fiddly. But that does not really help,, because you are not a bird which can fly in a direct line over obstacles. For me, the only usable function of the device is to get a satellite fix, and that can be done with very much cheaper, smaller, and lighter devices. Including storage of tracks, display of speed, etc., which of course is also possible with the eTrex. Monochrome display? In this video, not at my device, I have also seen blue and kind of olive. Is this a covert advertisement?

I found it on the trail. To be honest it's a hunk of shit The compass doesn't even work and the map sucks which are the only things that seem like I would want in a GPS. The only cool thing that worked well What's the sunrise in moonrise and maybe the elevation and distance

Great facts! Made me buy it. I'm doing the cape wrath trail in Scotland. I will have a map anyway for elevation and fairly confident with a compass and orientation. but as a back up for £100 it's a no brainer.

Great overview. However, in my experience, I’d like to add. The unit has to be on for Tracks to be recorded, Waypoints are recorded with unit on or off. Trackback feature doesn’t work well in the Forrest. But works great when there is no tree canopy above.

I just bought this after the LCD screen on my original etrex I used for 20 years started to fade. What an amazing product. If you are on foot with a map and a compass the etrek is perfect and you are good to go!!! This produt is more for people who want to confirm their position, minimise weight, and extend battery life as opposed to someone who wants to follow it for navigational guidance (although it can be used for that, read on). If you are comfortable navigating with a map and a compass it is perfect. If you do want to use it to guide you, you will need to download a GPS track and you can then follow the arrows, that works well too, but your battery life will be shortened as opposed to turning it on a few time during the day. For the price and the functionality it is amazing. You won't go wrong. Even if you carry it as a backup.

I use my 1999-01 unit. (Garmin 12) As I have no need for maps. The newer ones like the 20/30 aren't necessarily better. Remember the unit is only as good as your Satellites & reception. Laws keep & kept them from being 100% accurate.

What a mess. Don't buy unless you can find personal instruction. All I wanted to do was to record a point and get back to it. I was able to do that with a $20 dollar unit. Not with this. There should be night courses you can take to learn how to use this, followed up by out-in-the-field instruction. Presently, it's just an expensive conversation piece for my coffee table.
