How to properly measure pushrods for a hyd roller LS engine
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 місяці тому
Here we show how to properly measure for pushrod length on a hyd roller LS engine using fixed oe style rocker arms. In this video we are going to cover not only how to measure but also how to know when you are on the base circle of the camshaft and how to calculate lifter travel based off the rocker arm ratio

HPR LS7 cylinder head repair
Переглядів 2103 місяці тому
In the process of refreshing a OE LS7 cylinder head with our new CHE LS7 guides we found intake valve seats falling out of the cylinder head. On further investigation the seats with issues had as little as 0.001 press to a max of 0.003 press on the best one. A few are still in the cylinder head so our guess is either the counter bores were not cut correctly or seats were not measured to make su...
Lifter to bucket issues LSx block

Not all lifters and lifter trays are compatible. Just because they say 'drop in' lifters doesn't mean they will always work. In this case the lifter is taller than stock so when the cam comes around to peak lift then it is pushing up on the lifter tray causing it to flex and bend. Over time this can cause it to break and not control the lifter.
LS7 Guides how bad can it get?

Customer brought us a pair of re-worked LS7 heads, and he has put 70k miles on them so far. Unsure of who did the original work but he wanted to make sure they were good to go another 70k. At this time, I do not recall ever seeing a head this bad, on an engine that was still running. The worst one we see so far is about 0.020 clearance, not 0.002....but 20 thousandths clearance!!!

LS7 Rod wear
Переглядів 8893 роки тому
LS7 OE Ti rods have been known to start to wear hard against each other once the coating wears off. This example has worn away 1/2 rods as well as the 7/8 rods. cylinder 2 shows to have also spun the rod bearings.

So say I have a set of Johnson’s that are already pumped up/been used before. If I set the checker to zero lash with the rocker bolt torqued, can I add 1/2 of Johnson’s preload to the length of the checker?
It does make it a bit harder to do when you are working with lifters that have engine oil in them rather than the assembly oil. It is possible to double check yourself with them if you can spin the engine by hand a few times as the oil will work itself out. That said if you know for sure the travel of your lifter then you can go off the zero and add your preload. The hard part is knowing that zero because most will start to depress with little to no pressure. Which is why we have done it this way to know for sure were we are in the lifter travel.
My favorite Corvette. Really cool car!
That c5 has so much potential. What an amazing year.
That is a big meaty powerband 💯🇺🇸
Smells like sugar and Diabetes in the engine room today.
Dang this should help a lot! thanks for the video!
Did you tell us to add that measurement to a stock pushrod? maybe I missed something?
In this particular video no lengths were given just where it was. Depending on what length you are using to check with then you can work backwards to see if it is to short or to long. Again we are just looking for how far off the bottom of the lifter it is preloaded
Good video, I think a lot of people forget that the oil galleries on start up are not dry, they do have some oil in them and oil pressure reaches 40-65psi in around 5 seconds as long as the filter was already primed (like after a build or oil change), the people that dont prime their filter by prefilling it, the engine oil pump takes extra time to evacuate air from that filter, and pressure can take anyuwhere from 7-12 seconds to build.
Perfect! Short and to the point

So many people think bronze guides are great. Not me they are too soft
That's a smoker there
thats why i only put in hard cast iron guilds ,brozons wears to quick
I just don't get how that could happen in any running engine. This must be builder error. Would love to see the guide profile with a split ball gauge. if it is not flared (i doubt) it is builder error. The oil consumption must have been huge
Hard to say, a split ball won't check the intakes, they are that bad. Our Sunnen gage will show up to 0.008 but nothing past that. You can see the taper in the exhaust in the video, top number is the top of the guide and the lower is the bottom part of the guide. When we put a caliper, yes it's that bad, a caliper on the top of the intake guide they are over 0.023" clearance (measured 0.338ish if I recall right). Our thought might have been the valve being to rough itself but so far the profilometer doesn't show anything that abnormal on the stem.
Does it still have my moses ported MSD intake on it?
the only two things my inexperienced ass can think of is too much friction due to improper lubrication or improper guide material. i just wanna know what else led to 20 entire thousandths of extra wiggle room. a destroked LS7 will make it into one of my cars eventually, thats why i wanna know.
There is probably zero chance that it's valve wear and it is probably only guide wear? Wear from any oil starvation?
Correct
They must be having geometry issues.
Hard to do on a OE LS with stock rocker arms and valves as all of that is locked in place. Doesn't sound like it was crazy lift but we also only have the heads to go off.
Looks like bronze guides installed. If it's not the right kind they wear out fast. The only ones I find that work the best was Speed Pro manganese bronze but I don't think you can get them anymore.
CHE bronze guides with proper stem to guide clearance & valve stem surface finish. HPR for the win!
Some of these OEM LS7 valves are like files
Wheeeew😮
My guess is that there were no obvious signs or noises indicating the guides were worn that badly! 😳 Frightening!
From what the customer told us, he was reading online about it and thought he would have them checked out. You are correct, there was no indication it was this bad.
I know that's the craziest wear I have ever seen personally on a running LS7! I'm very impressed nothing let go before customer realized this was this bad!
What running, definitely misfiring like there's no tomorrow
Erik, I've seen a set worse than that. They were so bad that Katech called me to ask who was in there before them. The oval wear is so bad that it can be viewed from 10' away by eye. One set had deteriorated to the point that there were witness marks on the intake valve from impacts with the exhaust valve.
Why
Material needs to be removed when increasing stroke or moving to a larger rod in the case of most of the aluminum rod drag setups.
We don't see to many Horsepower Research engines/cars on UA-cam.
I saw a thread that never finished about this build on Corvette Forums. What was the curb weight of this car?
Looks like a spun rod bearings.

Any #’s?
I’m thinking of doing a 454 with big ltk heads 13:0:1 for 93 and also run e-85. My goals are at least 700whp and over 600lbs of torque. It will be ported msd intake. I’m currently N/A now SBE 376 pushing 550/480 on e-85 on an A8 C7 17.
