Just because you can't understand legalese doesn't mean she actually answered the question. And that's why he's smiling and asking it over and over. Everyone in that room understands what's actually happening. Clearly you are not in that room, because you don't have a clue. And by the way, what's happening is that he's mocking her, and she has to just sit and take it, because she doesn't dare deviate from her answer by even one single word.

Why does he need to have any respect for people he questions? Is there something about their potential position that calls for great respect from an elected official? Does he perhaps know something that YOU don't know about the character of this person?

@@denisryan898 Perhaps, Just perhaps, the people who he leans on so hard are disrespectful to him? Let's look at her form of response: "Senator! I did not etc". Now what kind of response is that? Starting off with "Senator!" is disrespectful. She's talking down to him as if he isn't qualified to be a senator and doesn't deserve the job. Next she has a rehearsed text that she never deviates from. Want to know why? Because a lawyer has told her to say that and ONLY that in response to his questions. A simple yes or no would not have been legally sufficent --- for her --- because then she would be answering the actual question and could be impeached for lying. But, the form of her response gives the appearance that she's answering the question, when actually she's merely talking around it. I'm surprised (well not really) that you didn't catch any of that. This woman is what one would normally call a "despicable person".

Well, if she sticks to the wording her defense attorneys dictated to her, they at least can't prosecute her for lying under oath. Of course, that pretty much defines her qualifications for the job.

For what? She came up with a carefully worded answer and stuck to it, in spite of the fact that the question only needed a YES or NO answer. You should really think (or ask an adult) about why that's important.

If you've got an English professor in your town you could talk to, ask him or her if this woman ever answered the question. Unless they have some ideological dog in the fight, they will laugh and say something like "well, she's not lying, but that's only because she refuses to answer the question."
