Training a Nervous Cockatiel (Day 1)
This is Coco! I trained her about 6 months ago (video on my channel) and we taught target training and her getting on my arm. I have four days to reach my goal: transferring her from my arm to an unfamiliar perch.

Flight Training a Clipped Baby Bird

Forgot to mention: this might look different (meaning more difficult) with larger birds such as macaws and stockier birds like African Greys and Senegal parrots. It's going to be more difficult for them to get lift, so if you need to do shorter sessions or simply walking recalls, that's okay. Also, I'm really struggling to explain what I'm doing while I'm doing it, so I'll probably go back to v...

Convince Your Parents to Get You a Parrot

Getting a parrot is a very serious decision. Make sure you’ve done your research and know what you’re getting into. About sleep: a bird can function on 8 hours of sleep. The reason I say they need 12 is because it will trigger hormones in birds if they get less. Hormones are the enemy when it comes to owning parrots. Beware. About rescuing: birds can come from trauma and be much more difficult ...

    You should get a flight cage for the cockatiel and remove the plastic toys and mirrors also add natural wood perches because you don’t want your cockatiel to get bumblefoot also add shredding and foraging toys because foraging toys helps a natural instinct by stuffing treats in the holes.

    I have a 15-year-old GCC named Baby Girl. She was no doubt abused as a chick. she also has "gimpy feet" ( gimpy is a southern us term for disabled/messed limbs, legs, and feet.) I haven't been able to touch or pick her up w/o her slipping away and hiding. even with bum feet, she can still move fast as well as fly fast. I use a hand towel to cover her up. the awful cry from her will break your heart when you touch her in the towel to pick her up. I love her anyway, we're buddies to the end. She and my 21-year-old Quaker Parrot, named Coco are BFF. they cuddle up to each other quite a bit. They visit each other's cages and share food and treats. She has to feel very good about her buddy and trusting him. he is the only one she will let get close to. Baby Girl is friendly to me, not a talker or touchy-feely but I can talk to her and her body language I can read like a well-read book. She will sound off more now. It's a shame that someone mistreated her as a chick. She is a sweetheart. I should be able to handle her just like this lady is doing in her video. I've left their wings alone and untrimmed. I don't like that idea of trimming flight feathers. My birds are out of their cages all day since i retired 12 yrs ago and they love it. Pop has no schedule these days and they don't either.

      That's pretty normal, so you're doing great. Bonding often takes more time with birds than it would with domesticated animals, so patience is key. I would focus on trick training to build that bond. Targeting, spin, fetch, etc. are good tricks to start out with since they're hands off. You can even feed meals out of your hand if you want!

    Any tips on a 12 year old bird? He’s a rescue (owner deceased) and he’s never warmed up much after the 3 years we’ve had him. Absolutely no petting but he’ll get on you with some food encouragement.

    • @blessednestpets
      @blessednestpets 2 місяці тому

      What diet and sleep schedule is he on? That can really affect behavior. You can always teach petting as a trick. Make a tunnel with your hand (or for a big bird, hold your hand at about the same height of your hand) and lure them under so their head barely touches your hand. Reward. This leads up to you putting your hand above them. If they stay calm/neutral about it, reward with a treat. Slowly build up to petting. They should get a treat for it as if it's a trick and eventually they'll learn to like being pet (though I don't know if the bird has been through any trauma with its past owner. It's totally possible the bird may just not like being pet.) If you're really struggling, go to birdtricksstore.com and book a consultation with one of their parrot trainers. I did that once with Landon Perdue and she was very helpful when I got stuck.

    How did you get yours to let you touch him? I adopted 2 off a breeder yesterday 5 months old both and they are so scared of me!! Today was day 2 and got them to out of my hand! But when I tried to touch them they run away!

    • @blessednestpets
      @blessednestpets 2 місяці тому

      It comes down to personality a lot of the time or how they were raised. My conure likely had a more hands on breeder. To build trust, work on hands off training (such as target training, spin, etc). Then, teach step up as a trick (rewarding with treats when they choose to get on your hand). Another thing you can do is treat touch as a trick. Make your hand into a tunnel and lure them close to it. Then, lure them under your hand so that it is just barely touching their head. Eventually you can place your tunnel hand over them, then a flat hand, and finally touch their head with your fingers. Hope that helps and make sure to take your time with each step.

      Were they adopted out instead of sold by the breeder for any particular reason--like did they get "returned" by other buyers? Just thinking that trauma may be a factor to consider and ask their breeder about. Everyone is right that it all comes down to time, technique, and persistence, but knowing their particular fears and stressors can also hep avoid setbacks from accidentally breaking trust!

      Right now my conure's tail feathers are falling out slowly because she's molting, but I can see new ones growing out to replace them. That part is normal. If he's plucking them, the diet, sleep, or mental stimulation could need to be changed. If his feathers fall out and don't grow out, a trip to the vet may be necessary. Hope that helps!
