#160. Surprise Find on the Pumphouse Beach
On this outing I visited the Elizabeth Street 1905 Pumphouse in Grimsby, ON. On the beach I discover the baskets that once contained the charcoal filters for the pumphouse ... rusting away.

Seeing remnants of the "Welland Railway Line" swing bridge that used to go over the Third Welland Canal. Today these remnants sit in Fairview Park in St. Catharines, ON. From 1881 to 1932 a streetcar service (Welland Railway) crossed the Third Welland Canal at this location. What remains today is the centre pivot point and the abutment that was once on the north side of the canal. The southern ...

#135. Few People See The Historic Thirty Mile Creek Mill.
Hey! Love your content. Been learning about the canal recently. Made about 3 trips here since the summer. I found a truck under water at I believe lock 18. I posted a video of it on my channel. Not sure if you know anything about it.
Thank you. I was out at the Third Welland Canal today looking for the remains of Lock 19 (which I found). There are lots of details that are visible now that winter is here. I'm surprised about the truck in Lock 18 which I see on your video. I'll have to go again and check it out. I can't imagine how it got there. It seems impossible but there it is.
Hello, where did you park your vehicle to access the trail to get to the Three Sisters Ruins?
Hello. Park at the Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail - Paris Trailhead off Willow Street. 43.203865°, -80.373179° 3 km hike or bike from the parking lot. Thanks for watching !
Thank you for this video! It's great to have this stuff documented because things can fall apart so quickly. I was walking through the park on Friday and some of what you show is now gone. For example, I looked for the water ride you describe at the end of the video and very little remains, so I appreciated this doubly.
Thank you. I'm glad to hear that others appreciate the history around the area even when the remnants are few. I received another comment from another viewer that things were changing rapidly there. I appreciate that it's a bunch of old decayed concrete but the stories behind it are wonderful. Thanks for watching !
How selfish, you wouldnt find the respective owners to return them? Disrespectful of others property. Mayhaps they were placed there on purpose?
Clearly these were abandoned, had flown many many kilometers from their origin and their original owners just didn't care where they went. LOL.
Where abouts? It's a pretty location
This is at a remaining lock of the Third Welland Canal (1881-1932), Thorold, ON. Lat/Long: 43.143977,-79.182463 It's a great location to go for an afternoon walk and imagine the ships of the last century making their way along this route. Thanks for watching.
Hi, glad to see you are out and about again! Same as you, I have no idea what it could be either, good luck finding out!
Thanks. I took a break over the summer but plan now to explore some new places and produce more videos. If you have any leads on good explores please let me know. Thanks for watching.
Fascinating video. I go for walks in that area pretty often. It's interesting how much of what you pointed out has disappeared even in the 3 years since the video!
Thanks for the update. It's a shame that some portions can't be preserved in park form. I'll have to visit again to see what it's like today. Thanks for watching !
There are some BANGER album covers to be created from this bridge.
Thanks for watching !
Sixes or Sixties?
Sixes. Sixes referred to the new 40 hp six cylinder engine that was in this car.
Wooden spokes too!
Wooden spokes which was common around that time.
a good project car
It's definitely a good project car. Thanks for watching.
Location No.2 was a creamery. Where milk was bottled.
Thanks for the information. That's really interesting ! I didn't see any debris that would link to that use. Thanks for watching!
Did you find the dairy farm creamery foundation on the other side of the old St. David's Rd bridge remains?
I believe that was the foundation of a structure I came across in episode #105. Take a look and see if that's the one. Thanks for watching !
Looks older than you think
This would date to the Third Welland Canal which was constructed around 1881. Thanks for watching.
no historical photos of the bridge? or any historical photo links?
The 1930's aerial photography can be found here : experience.arcgis.com/experience/d6985c1b40ca4604bcb7f9716f15a285/page/Page-1/?draft=true Thanks for watching !
You need to check out the waterways along Oakdale Avenue, Jaycee park leading into Port Dalhousie and Martindale Pond where the rowing course is. Some fascinating stuff. If you need a boat to paddle I can hook you up ! And even accompany you.... Lots of fascinating history along the old Welland Canal routes. Also the old Wainfleet feeder canals.
Yes, there's a great deal more history in the area than may realize. Coincidentally, I was at Jaycee park a couple of days ago to see the Third Welland canal lock at the pond and to walk over to the remnants of Lock No 4. There's lots of interesting details to look at. Thanks for watching !
Always liked going to this park and looking at the remains of the old canal..... look at Google Maps and you can see the route of the Old Canal through the city of St Catharines.
It's interesting that you can still see the route of the Third Welland Canal through the city with a few traces of the canal itself. Thanks for watching !
You know what they say, leaves of three, let It be leaves of seven, put it in your pipe.
Good saying. Thanks for watching !
To all you guys to check out old railroad tracks, do you know what a machete is?
Lol. Thanks for the suggestion. I usually don't have much use for a machete but that would have been the day I did.
Is it possible that small structure near the first abandoned railway bridge was a hunting blind?
It's possible. There are a lot of wild turkeys around the area so perhaps someone was hunting. Thanks for watching !
That's what I was going to suggest.
Downstream by the weir. is the foundation of some old building.
I've seen evidence there of mill pond (the trail runs on top of the old pond retaining wall) and i have seen a pile of bricks where a building once stood. Do you have coordinates for that building to confirm ? Thanks for watching !
@@photoghiking I think it may have been put behind a fence with a no trespassing sign recently, I'll check for sure when I'm down there next week.
Ok, the good news is that the general area appears to still be on public land. The bad news is that I can't really find it again with all the foliage, can I get back to you in 6 months?
@@Captain_Commenter Sure thing ! Thanks for the update.
Oh yes, this is the one. There's also the foundation of an old building in the area, complete with a well. Your videos are fabulous bro.
Yes there are foundations of two buildings on the north side of the gully as well as a set of stairs off the road edge on the north west side of the bridge. I show the building foundations in my videos as well. Thanks for watching.
There are a bunch of semi buried locks behind the Keg on Glenridge
Those locks are the abandoned locks of the Second Welland Canal. That's a great hike through there as well with some water still flowing through it. Thanks for watching !
Wow that iron anchor is really a beautiful design. I do cast iron restorations and I can tell that would be a fairly easy restoration. At least for that metal part.
The anchor for the canal gate hinge is quite remarkable. I previously saw a star burst like pattern in the stone of other abandoned locks but didn't understand how it worked until I saw the actual hardware in place. Thanks for watching !
Impressive 👌
Thanks for watching !
We bike and walk through this area all the time. Great place to wander around. Great video too! Thanks!
A very nice location. Too bad they haven't preserved the lock mechanisms. Thanks for watching !
Electricity?
Yes, the electric streetcars would cross this bridge back in the day. Thanks for watching !
I've been hiking to this general area for years and never seen this, good find. I do know about the Blue Ghost Bridge though, and as far as I can tell it's not haunted though.
Thanks for the comment. What bridge are you referring to ? The swing bridge that replaced the tunnel ? Thanks for watching !
@@photoghiking There's ruins of a large bridge in the woods near the tunnel, made from the same limestone.
@@Captain_Commenter. Ah yes that bridge was part of road that came from thorold down the west side of the Third Welland Canal, across that bridge, and then through a tunnel under the railway line (behind the GM plant), and then under the canal using the tunnel in this video.
Good for you on giving the viewers a different side of this place, I may or may not have walked through there once without the benefit of waders, ha ha.
The east end of the tunnel has always been flooded the times I have visited and very mushy to walk on. Water continues to leak through the tunnel ceiling on that end so it'll never dry up I would think. Thanks for watching !
I love railroads. Thanks for sharing.
Railroad bridges are always a good explore. Thanks !
Lol we stood that pillar up at 10:20
Another stone like it laying down and another base for a tablet by that pillar, must've went just after us. We had no snow
The day we went it was very cold. The ground was very frozen, very little mud at all. It was interesting to see the old road bridge there as well. Thanks for watching !
That pillar was likely for a grave plot to fence around it or hang a chain.
Sometimes you find pieces of bone near the old graves
From what we understand the families had to pay to have the graves relocated. I'm sure some did some DIY to get it done. Not surprised there are remains still there. Thanks !
Inwent lsst month too i didnt realize that was a ship. Cool😅 730 in your clip thats a bridge for an old road too, i found aome of the graves stones too
You couldn't tell it was a ship except from the drone. Thanks !
Niagara local here. Hi!
I would imagine that a good portion of the tunnel is now flooded as it was leaking when it was in service. Thanks for watching !
@photoghiking yes I agree, I visited the blueghost tunnel.itself last month and the end is still flooded. I don't remember it never being flooded. I miss the old dirtbiking days back there lol
Water is continuously leaking into blue ghost tunnel from the ceiling as well. It's no wonder that the east end of the tunnel is always flooded. Thanks for the great comments !
cool
I'm sure that vehicle has been down there a long time. Thanks for watching !
In city of toronto no rules just deal with it. I dont see harm here.
Thanks for watching !
I actually had this done to me, they used the left turn lane
Yes that's exactly what this driver did. Thanks for watching!
Same that happened to me too
@@photoghikinghi I never bed pined pls pin I sub
yup happened to me too the first month i got my license. people are scary
If that road was a little wider that would be a fun road to drive
It's a great country road that is fun to drive but I have to be cautious. There's always deer, coyotes or some animal (or bird) running across in front of me. Thanks for watching !
Looks like only the building was sold for wrecking purposes , in 1944. The municipality owned the property up until 1980. The municipality auctioned off the property to a private individual.
Thanks for the information and watching !
The upstairs was divided into thirteen bedrooms. The main floor had two dining rooms, one private, one large public, a large well-equipped kitchen and two bathrooms
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching.
Not much information out there but I found a historical story........Here is the rest of the info to your story.... The lodge was profitable for some years until the CPR cut off access. The property was sold to Mr. T.E. Robson of Brantford who wanted it for a summer home. Mr. Robson negotiated with CPR for some time until all avenues of appeal were exhausted. Eventually, he sold the property to the Township of South Dumfries. Early in 1944 the property was put up for sale by the township for wrecking purposes. The wrecking crew came and took what they wanted. Not sure why the walls were left up.
I recall reading that access became an issue. Thanks for watching and providing the information.
Oh deer !
Yes. They're moving around a lot this spring. Thanks for watching !
Very cool. I hope everyone around there drives as cautiously as you do.
There are frequently deer in the area at that time in the morning so I am usually looking for them. Thanks for watching.
Great shots 🤩
Thanks for watching !
I do believe there is a car in wrecked ship area in the lock tho🔒
Yes you are correct. There appears to be some kind of vehicle near the gates on the other end of the lock. All that's left is the frame, rear end and engine. Thanks for watching !
Nudity = liberty and wellness.
This beach is so tranquil and relaxing. Thanks for watching !
Cool. Where was this?
Near Niagara Falls. Thanks for watching !

Yes it is. I expected a zombie to pop out behind every corner. Thanks for watching!
Very beautiful looking
Thank you so much 😊
