JetStream JTB2B Dual Band Antenna Gone Bad
Переглядів 3,6 тис.8 років тому
Helping a friend with a Ham Radio antenna problem. The antenna is a JetStream JTB2B Dual Band 2m/70cm 2 section type. It had been up about a year doing fine when he suddenly noticed the SWR was high. The meter I am using in this video is a Daiwa CN-801V 140-525 mhz 200 watt cross-needle type. The radio used is a Kenwood TM-V71A Dual Band mobile.

HEY SIR I HAVE A NEW JETSTREAM DUAL BAND ANTENNA JTB2 WHEN I WENT TO PUT IT TOGETHER . I SEEN TE TOP &BOTTOM SECTIONS HAVE A AIR SPENDED ROD / COPPER TUBE IN THEM THE BOTTOM SECTION OE HAS A SET SCREW ON IT . OK THE TOP ONE NEEDS TO GO INTO THE BOTTOM ONE . OK I C THAT but on mine the top section the iner tube/copper rod is allte way to 1 side & i cant get it to sty in the center so i can get it into the bottom one with the set screw . dose it come ot some how?. i c there is a metal cap on the fiberglass outer tube dose that com off ? the directions dont say anything about that
I'm using form a gasket for sealing on my Tram 1481. This is my second repair of water leakage.
Put some Vaseline on one flange. Clean the other flange very well with denatured alcohol and apply the sealant. Assemble the two pieces like normal. The Vaseline serves as a parting agent so the two flanges can be separated at a later date if needed.
Just found this video looking for a way to do an actual fiberglass repair on a Solarcon A-99. It's pre-tuned for 10m thanks to it coming from another HAM, so that's one question solved ahead of time. But the problem is that it's about 25 years old and has been very weathered. The fiberglass itself is becoming brittle on the outer coating and flaking off the shaft in the way fiberglass becomes a microscopic, super sharp spear. I am looking for a way to seal this properly so as to not affect the RF transmit or receive, and have it smooth and sealed and UV protected so it's not going to go through this again. Thanks, N2JZS
And how was the swr after all that ? How the antenna perform after the repair of water ??
What we call a total bodge up

Great video and repair job! I have a Jetstream JTB1B, Dual Band 3 section 17', which is fine on 2m but has high SWR on 440! I've had this problem before and there was moisture same as in the video. When it was taken down, the 3 sections just came undone when laid on the ground. It could've been faulty installation or due to high winds, I'm leaning towards high winds. I live in an area with high winds. What should have been done on final installation is to seal with RTV and silicone self-healing tape as in the video. The person helping me (doing most of the work) felt rushed and didn't do it right, I was a new ham then. You know the old saying, when you want it done right, do it yourself! I'm showing this video to my buddy who's doing the climbing. I will take a more active role and do my due diligence. I will test with an antenna analyzer before re-installing. Cable tested ok with a TDR test. These antennas are pretty good for the money if you do the prep before hand, will last a long time! Thanks for posting! 73! W2QLH
Thanks for the video. I have issues with my Diamond X7000 tribander snapping just above the radials. I am attempting to repair the fibreglass tube and your strip-down has helped a lot. Thanks. G0RLJ
what is the fuse part number?.
OK NICE DE VU2TKC Kolkata INDIA..

Nice breakdown of this antenna, you will help others avoid these issues! The antenna looks Ok, may get one? Nice job, thank you !!
Locktite on the connecting screw would have been better , because of the strong winds could loosen it.
Very good, thank you. One item sadly missing- wire stripping. An article said "5/16 inch to 3/8 inch" - wrong! I had bare wire sticking out. Seems to be 1/4" needed.
That rtv is an excellent idea also add an extra o ring if you have it that way when you tighten it good it will grip that fiberglass good an seal it then wrap with silicon tape . Do same tape on the bottom fiberglass to metal joint . Now that will make it waterproof but you still need to cut 2 v groves on the side of the so230 connector to allow any water out and help it breath then you will have a good antenna for many years.
Grazie, ma il mio problema è separare il tubo per svitare ampenol , di nuovo grazie
A lot of these fiberglass antennas have water promblems they use fiberglass resin to " glue " the fiberglass to the metal base and due to thermo expansion it will break loose not to mention they don't use enough resin in most cases. Also the joint where the two sections come together it leaks too, so lube this spot with silicon dielectric grease and make sure the silicon band if you have one is compressed good as it will expand and stop any water coming in . On a safe side use silicon tape and wrap both sections to guarantee no water getting in , then remove the so239 and file 2v groves on two sides " don't touch the threads " and reinstall . Now if water gets in it will have a way out and shouldn't have a way to get in. This is best way to make this type of antenna last many productive years.

After 7 years on top of my tower the SWR on my JTB-2 went sky high.. I dug out the climbing belt and hauled it down. Turns out that the same solder joint you repaired came apart on mine. I soldered it up and I'm back in business. I guess the constant movement from the wind over the years weakened the joint to the point that it broke. One good thing was that I didn't have any trouble with water getting in. Everything was dry. (I did use silicone on the joins when I first installed the antenna).
How did it test out after the repair? I was looking at one of these and wondered if a little preventative maintenance would go a long way.
Ok. My local rep at Gigaparts store told me that those connectors in that bag you have do connect with each others; you have to have the other type of connectors for them to work but I see you connecting them together ok. Was he not informing me right?
There is only the bodies in the bag. This is different than a lot of other connectors like the OEM he removed. You rotate the body 180 degrees to connect them
Flex seal lol these antenna perform as good as diamond x510 but $100 cheaper construction not as good as diamond and water will get in antenna i have that happen first time i put one up
Thank you for a clear and simple video. Now I know how to do this right.
Fantastic video sir. thank you!
