what pattern do you use for the warp? How many threads?
@@dianerundstrom7451 Let’s say you are using black and white for your alternating warp colors… Block 1. - thread black on shaft 1 and white on shaft 2 for however wide you want that block. Block 2. - thread white on shaft 1 and black on shaft 2 for however wide you want that block. So maybe you want 2 inches of block 1 and 3 inches of block 2, and then 4 inches of block 1, etc. Totally up to you. When you switch blocks you will have two warps of the same color next to each other. To get the block effect you weave one pick of the pattern weft followed by one pick of a thinner weft. To change pattern blocks, throw two pics of the thin weft between the alternating blocks. It’s up to you how tall you want the block.
The table runner has 24 white warps, and then white and black for 24, and just repeats.
@@alltangledup-afiberexplora8236. I think I am not making myself the beginner clear. How do I know how to thread the heddles? What pattern and how many threads in the warp? Thank you for your patience
I screwed a block of oak on that cross leg on each side, and added a rubber bumper to it, to give the beater a place to lay in the back position. I also drilled a 1/4 inch hole THROUGH the leg of the beater and the cross leg of the loom with the beater in the full vertical position. Then when I am warping, I slip a 1/4 inch lynch pin through the hole and it holds my beater in place for dressing.
Do you know how to hand-make webbing for a handle?
Thanks for posting this. I just got an Old 2 shaft loom on marketplace and starting to put it together. Do you have any books you recommend?
what is the individual warp thread that appears at your selvage ?
I’m not sure what you mean. I think you are seeing my floating selvedge, which is a warp that is not threaded through a heddle, but just through the reed. I use these if I am weaving something with two shuttles like for log cabin.
Well you are really inspiring me here! Thanks for the video,I think I'll make a runner for my entryway with log cabin rags!!
Thanks for the video!!
Yes, I could see the difference after shaving. Beautiful rug. Thanks for sharing.
Love your machine! Can't wait to see the video of you weaving with them.
Hi, I'm a weaver from Italy! I really like all your videos, but this time you really helped me! I've always searched a yarn twister, but it's hard to find it, why I didn't think to simply buy an HAIR TWISTER by myself?!? Now it seems so obvious!!! Thanks 4 the help and for your videos (just to let you know, I would really like some lessons about differents kinds of twill.. if you can). See you soon, Lisa (from Rome) 🤗
When I design bags with weavings, I plan for the lining to carry the weight of the articles inside and think of the weaving as a second skin... as a decoration, instead of a part of the function of the bag. This way there is less distortion in the weaving. 💖🌞🌵😷
Sounds lile u have a cat scratching the door in the background noise lol. I love closing bags for putting my knitting, crochet, cross-stitch projects in.
Great bags and nice rug.
Thanks! I need to make one for myself some day.
yes all the bags & rug are colorful & nicely done. I have been doing braided fringe on my different blankets, ponchos, purses. The braided fringe stays nice for a very long time.
The rug is inspiring! Great content. I just subscribed.
I’m going to try to be more regular in posting. Sometimes I forget I even have a UA-cam channel.
The Peter Collingwood book, “The Techniques Rug Weaving,” is available as a free pdf by University of Arizona, 1969. Google the title.
I forgot to mention that, so thanks for adding the info. For some reason when I downloaded it I ended up missing some pages. I do like having the physical book.
Lovely bag. Love the cord application.
Just found your videos! Thank you. Very informative and easy to understand
How did you warp for towels ?
I used 8/4 Colton warp at 12 ends per inch in a 12 dent reed. This is a Union 36 loom with a sectional warp beam. I wound 24 ends in each section using the thread guide and 24 tubes of warp. Hope this answers your question!
Great idea to use up the end of a warp.
Hello Susan, this is totally off topic but I need some advise with an issue I'm struggling with. I have a union loom 36 that was given to me a few months ago.
Instead of tying knots, I surge the ends in a fairly tight surge.
Super job!!🎉
Why did you tie on in front , in front of reed?
This is a sectional beam, so I have wound all the new warp on the warp beam. I am tying on at the back of the loom to the old warp. The old warp goes from the front of the loom, through the reed, through the heddles and to the back of the loom. I do have a loose knot through the old warp to keep it from accidentally sliding through the reed. Once I have all my knots tied, I will gently pull the new warp through the heddles and reed to the front. I have inserted eye heddles, so the knots go through fairly easily, but I do take care and just pull a 1 or 2 inch section through at a time. Once I have the new warp at the front of the loom, I cut off the old warp and lash on. Hope this helps! I don't know that this saves a lot of time, but the threading will be correct. Also, at my advanced age, I find it more comfortable to tie knot rather than thread heddles and reed -- also my eyesight isn't great.
Good job nice 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for sharing this is awesome to watch. :)
Your towels are beautiful
Thank you. I like using them.
Hello. Just curious why do you sew them together at a 90 degree angle vs straight? I am just learning. Thanks!

Your videos are great! I hope you'll find time and interest in making more. Thanks!
Hi - if i have a 24 inch loom- what size temple should i buy?
Hi Carol, temples are adjustable within a certain size range. If you plan to weave the full width then it should expand to your 24 inches, but it will only go within a certain size range, so might not go as small as you like. I think I now have 4 different temples in different sizes. And there is probably still some dimension I am missing! I seem to have temples for scarves, towels and rugs. I wish these things weren’t so expensive. I tried clips but they don’t seem to work well for me on the way my looms are built. Not everyone likes temples, but I do in many situations.
I would love to see how you wound that warp. Still wrestling with that whole thing!
Awesome! I love R and M
Do you wet finish before or after tying the damascus knots?
I don't always wet finish wool, although I do like to give it a press with the steam iron. I always finish my edges before doing anything else.
How many layers do you cut at a time? I like your set up.
I think there are 8 here. It really depends on the fabric. I try to fold the fabric for an easy distance where I don’t have to stretch. I just try to make sure that I’m not bogging down the cutter so that I burn up the motor.
beautiful
Why do you use a thinner weft thread between rag wefts please?
Some of the warp is threaded alternating light and dark. In order to get all dark or all light warp to show, you have to throw a pic of the thin weft between each rag shot. If you are weaving with the dark warp showing and you want to switch to the light warp on top, you have to throw 2 shots of the thin weft. Without the thin weft, you would have one row with the dark warp on top, and one row with the light warp.
Just wondering why you use a thinner weft between the rag weft?
Are you at the back of your loom?
Yes, I am warping from back to front here. I have wound on the new warp onto my sectional beam, and I am then I tie the new warp onto the old warp at the back of the loom. Then I pull it through the heddles and then the reed to the front beam. You can also do this if you warp from front to back, but of course you wouldn't have a sectional beam for that.
Very good
Great Video and amazing to see that the Union 36 loom can weave so much more than rag rugs. Could you share the name of the Rio Grande style weaving book you referenced in this video please? Thanks!
Here is where you can find the book: www.chimayoweavers.com/product/BookGuidebook.html Take some time to look at all the weaving on their website.
where are you finding the large tubes of the threads? All I seem to find are the smaller ones.
Webs, Great Northern, Yarn Barn, R & M Yarns are all good sources in the U.S. Dick Blick carries a limited range of colors for 8/4 warp, but often has free shipping.
@@alltangledup-afiberexplora8236 Ty so much!
Where did you purchase your boat shuttles?
I do almost all my shopping via online sites. Often multiple sites will have the same item so I compare prices and shipping costs.

Thanks for sharing this! I’ve wanted to make a handwoven bag for sometime and this has given me inspiration to make one.
The only way to learn is to try it. My bags are very simple!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. What is your loom? What yarn do you use? I’m learning to weave on a rigid heddle. It’s a learning curve for me. I’m not a natural that is for sure!
Hi Ann. I started with a rigid heddle loom a few years ago. Now I have two floor looms. The loom in the video is a 2 shaft Union 36 loom. It’s probably 60 plus years old. These looms were designed for weaving rag rugs. They are very sturdy. I do weave rag rugs, but I also like to weave other things like towels and wool rugs. I am using a 12 dent reed. The warp is 8/4 cotton. The weft varies from the 8/4 to 3/2 on these towels. 5/2 cotton also works, or doubled 8/2 at this sett. There is also a slub cotton in some of these. I get bored weaving the same thing, so every towel is different. The structure here is just plain weave, although I like to vary the number of pics in a shed for visual interest.
@@alltangledup-afiberexplora8236 thank you! This is very helpful. I have a lot to learn. It will be a fun journey. I’m thinking I’ll end up with a floor loom at some point. I’ve done a couple of rag rugs on my loom. They turned out great. Your towels are lovely.
Great video thank you. I always get such useful tips from you🙏
I always enjoy watching you weave and I always learn something from you😊🙏
Thanks Beverley. Almost everything I know I learned from videos. I do use books, too.
This is EXACTLY the instruction I needed; the basics and I so appreciate it. You do a great job of keeping it simple. Beautiful piece as well!
Bag turned out great. Thanks for the video.
