The T480 has two RAM slots and Power Bridge. The T490 doesn't offer any improvements. Both models use Intel's 8th generation processors. So in my opinion the choice is simple - the T480.

I also have an X230 and I think it can still easily last 4-5 more years with 16GB of RAM, an IPS display and an SSD, and also if you keep it clean. But you have to keep your expectations in check, you will not be able to play 4K 60FPS video or run GTAV (even at the lowest settings, with it still being playable) on this laptop. But the X230 can handle 1080p 60FPS video playback on UA-cam, some light games like Factorio or Tetris. Word processing, programming are things that it can handle still. Especially if you run Linux on it which is lighter on system resources than Windows. I bought my X230 last week for £200 on Ebay, with an IPS display, 8 gigs of RAM and a 128GB SSD, in very good condition. It feels great to use, the keyboard is fantastic and it is tiny and quite light. But for a laptop as old as this I overpaid for it. I would say that £90-£120 is a good price range for this laptop. For £200 a T480 or higher laptop would be much better value in the long run. But since I already have a T470 I thought no reason to buy a laptop that is similar.

The touch screen is practically no different from a regular FHD. Battery life may be slightly lower, but not enough to worry about it. I was skeptical about laptops with a touch screen, but after purchasing the X1 Yoga I completely changed my mind and I think it is quite a nice and convenient option.

@@benchmarks31 ..interesting. I have never viewed the two screens (touch vs non-touch) side by side. Is it possible to notice any differnce by simply looking at them? The Lenovo specs lists the same brightness etc. Wish there was a side by side video on it. The battery life is over 9 hours so I doubt all those who say it kills 30 percent of battery life.

30 percent less battery life by using a touch screen? That can't be true. Unfortunately, I don't have a touchscreen T480, so I can only rely on what I can see on UA-cam or read.

@@benchmarks31 ,,i suspect that you are correct. I doubt that there is any difference, or at least no measurable difference. In fact, I doubt that the screen even appears different. It may be that the touch is a better looking image. Seems just about perfect from looking at it. Wish Windows 10 had better Aero transparancy like Windows 7, though.

my man, they practically made you a 70ish $ discount by giving you one with touch.

My T480 has a very worn out battery and lasts about 2-3 hours. A new one should last about 7 hours.

Yes, the T480 will work great with Linux! Thinkpads generally have great Linux compatibility.

It depends on your preferences. The X390 is basically a 13-inch T490. However, it is important to note that the X390 has RAM soldered in, so it is not easy to upgrade.

@benchmarks31 thanks. Sadly I had to get the x390 yoga instead of the t480. I still think it should be alright for what I have to do. It's also just temporary (at least that's what I'm telling myself)

X390 Yoga is a great laptop! I have X1 Yoga 1st gen (i5 6th gen) and it is a great laptop for browsing the internet and watching YT.

@benchmarks31 so (random question) would it be better to keep windows 10 pro on this x390 yoga? Or should I update to the more demanding windows 11? Where this has only 8gb ram I'm worried about the functionality if I need more demanding things to be ran.

It depends a lot on your preferences. However, considering your X390 only has 8GB of RAM, I would suggest sticking with Windows 10.

Thanks for suggestion. I've been undervolting the T480 a bit lately, the temperatures are suspiciously high even while watching UA-cam.

@@benchmarks31 Are you suggesting that the temps are higher because of the undervolt? I doubt it's because of that. You might want to check other metrics in ThrottleStop. Personally, I'm fine with my CPU running at max temps under load. I got a 4234 Cinebench multi-core score with 4 passes this morning after trying out a bit more undervolting.

No, you misunderstood. The temperatures are high before undervolting. Even in the video you can see that the temperatures on stock settings are very high - 90 degrees Celsius during gaming.

Yes, it will lower the temperature. That's why I've recently become interested in CPU undervolting and I'm planning to do it on my T480.

Yes, you can replace the keyboard with a backlit one in the X280.

The processor is not overclocked. All BIOS settings are default. MSI B550-A PRO motherboard.

@@Zeroneii3 Im wondering which one i should get rn. The options are two: T480 i5-8250U 32 gig ram UHD 620 T480S i7-8650U 24 gig ram UHD 620 Price is pretty much the same. I think specs wise the t480s is better and the second heatsink is nice too. However im a little sceptical about the battery as its a used laptop, but I do have a decent 72 Wh battery that I could easily put on the T480. Both got pros and cons🤷‍♂️

Should be fine, but it will depend on the complexity of your code.

The brightest screen for the T480 is the WQHD one. Its brightness is 300 nits.
