Your reading of «American Psycho» reminded me of the «Once Upon a Time...at Bennington College» Podcast, about Donna Tartt and Bret Easton Ellis' time at that Northeastern College in the early 80s: «Mad Men for Gen-X» to quote LA Times, and a very interesting intersection of two authors (they even briefly dated!) with very different backgrounds and styles (Ellis the Preppy MTV-obsessed Californian Troublemaker with a Post-Modern obsession for the macabre and risque behind the polished images of Hollywood and New York, Tartt the Southern Wallflower «Yoko Ono» obsessed with both 19th Century Western Classics & Ancient Greek Classics, as well as Jazz-era Oxford) that both have shaped Modern American Fiction immensely, often with direct and indirect parallells and callbacks to their time at Bennington, especially «Hampden College» in Tartt's «The Secret History» and Ellis' «Camden College» in «Less Than Zero» & «The Rules of Attraction»! As for myself, in October I read: Mary Shelley’s «Frankenstein» (Gothic Science Fiction, with illustrations by Bernie Wrightson: Breathtaking!) «The Land Leviathan» (A Nomad of the Time Streams» Trilogy #2) by Michael Moorcock (Multiverse/Alternative History/Time Travel Steampunk(?)😅) «Midnight Falcon» (Rigante #2) by David Gemmell (Heroic Fantasy/S&S) «The City» (City of Victory Trilogy #2) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during Emperor Trajan’s Campaigns) «The Power Broker» by Robert Caro (Political Biography/Investigative Journalism Classic, my Q4 long-read) My November TBR: «The Steel Tsar» (A Nomad of the Time Streams» Trilogy #3) by Michael Moorcock (Multiverse/Alternative History/Time Travel Steampunk(?)😅) «Lord of Light» by Roger Zelazny (Science Fantasy inspired by the Legend of Siddhartha Gautama/the Buddha) «The Fury of the Gods» (Bloodsworn Saga #3) by John Gwynne (Epic Fantasy inspired by Norse Mythology) «Dreaming the Eagle» («Boudica» #1) by Manda Scott (Historical Fiction about the Celtic British Queen and her Rebellion against the Romans) «The Wall» (City of Victory Trilogy #3) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during the building of Hadrian’s Wall) (continuing) «The Power Broker» by Robert Caro (Political Biography/Investigative Journalism Classic, my Q4 long-read) Cheers! 😃

Must be a decade since I read it, but some very haunting images and intriguing developments of both society and tech! Can also recommend his other novel, “The Water Knife”, think the love child of “Blade Runner”, “Mad Max” and “Chinatown” set in a Southwest US hit increasingly desertification with collapsing US States and Corporations and Individuals fighting by any means for the legal water rights to a dwindling Colorado River…. «Tigana»!🤩Excited to read «Dreamer, Awake!» and «The Windup Girl» is heartbreaking and thought provoking, highly recommened! «Stand on Zanzibar» is fascinating at both how very right and how very wrong it's 2010 is compared to IRL, also I can imagine its fragmented story style also weirdly working better for a Younger Audience used to tiktoks and insta stories! In September I read three Rosemary Sutcliffe novels: 2 YA Historical Fiction Novels, «The Silver Branch» & «The Lantern Bearers» (set in Ancient Britain during the Late Roman and the Roman Withdrawal & Saxon Invasions, respectively) and an Arthurian Historical Fiction novel, «Sword at Sunset», all loosely connectied to each other following a family over generations, with the POV character of «The Lantern Bearers» as a mentor figure and his son one of Arthur’s companions in «Sword at Sunset». I also finished «Sword in the Storm» («Rigante» series #1) by David Gemmell (S&S/Heroic Fantasy, inspired by Celtic Britain and the Roman Invasions) and «The Eternal Champion» by Michael Moorcock (Multiverse S&S/(Anti-?)Heroic Fantasy). Just finished «Lustrum» (US: «Conspirata», «Cicero»-Trilogy #2) by Robert Harris (Historical Fiction about the Roman Statesman), that one or «Sword in the Storm» might be my Book of the Month! I am mostly mood-reading this Autumn (and speaking of spooky, I think I am scared enough after reading «The Prince of Nothing» Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker this Summer, to the point I might need an exorcism or two in addition to psychological therapy! 😅😂), but my tentative October TBR List: «Midnight Falcon» (Rigante #2) by David Gemmell (Heroic Fantasy/S&S) «Leviathan Falls» (The Expanse, #9) by James S.A. Corey (Space opera, pushed back from this month’s TBR) «The Land Leviathan» (A Nomad of the Time Streams» Trilogy #2) by Michael Moorcock (Multiverse/Alternative History/Time Travel Steampunk(?)😅) «The City» (City of Victory Trilogy #2) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during Emperor Trajan’s Campaigns) My October MBR List: «Dreaming the Eagle» («Boudica» #1) by Manda Scott (Historical Fiction about the Celtic British Queen and her Rebellion against the Romans) «The Children of Gods & Fighting Men» by Shauna Lawless (Historical Fantasy set in Ireland during the Viking Age) Cheers!😃

“Tigana”!🤩 Glad you are enjoying it so much so far! I hate to “toot my own horn”, but I have a couple of “Tigana”-lore “videos”*(*Read: Badly made PowerPoint Presentations with no audio! 😅): At least the first one should be fine to watch no matter how far you are into the novel, and the second one is my “emergency explainer” to break open when corn swords start appearing! 🌽⚔️😄 Birds (lovely), bear…ok! 😨😅😆 “1984”: Timeless Classic! Have read a few Haggard novels (“She”, “King Solomon’s Mines”) and can definitely see an influence from Ayesha/“She” on the scene of Galadriel and her magical water mirror and the mines of the Dwarfs! Have also seen some comparisons made between the trio of protagonists in “She” and three of the hobbits: The loyal working class servant Job to trusty old Sam, the middle class scientist Horace to the i and wanderlust of Frodo and the young noble Leo to Pippin! I was very pleasantly surprised that Nicola Griffith had done her history homework in “Hild”! In August I finished Part 1 & 2 of “To Green Angel Tower” by Tad Williams (Epic Fantasy, final «novel(s)» in the “Memory, Sorrow & Thorn” “Trilogy”), Michael Moorcock’s “The Warlord of the Air” (Multiverse Time Travel Steampunk? 😅), and “The Thousandfold Thought” (Epic Dark/Grimdark Fantasy, the final novel in the «Prince of Nothing» Trilogy) by R. Scott Bakker. So after a very ambitious (but very rewarding) Summer TBR (both the «Memory, Sorrow & Thorn» & the «Prince of Nothing» trilogies ++), this Autumn I am gonna be a bit more mood reading with no «big chonkers». I know I am definitely gonna read «Leviathan Wakes» (The Expanse #9, Space Opera, only book I didn’t get to from my Summer TBR) & «Lustrum» (US: «Conspirata», Cicero Trilogy #2, Historical Fiction about the eponymous Roman Statesman) by Robert Harris (book #1 «Imperium» is contending for my book of the year so far, together with GGK’s «A Brightness Long Ago»). I am most likely also gonna get to Michael Moorcock’s «(The Tale of)The Eternal Champion» Trilogy (Epic Fantasy/S&S). Might also get to some Rosemary Sutcliff (YA Historical Fiction) & David Gemmell (Epic Fantasy). Cheers!

An incredible review--you really need to do audiobook voices! That said, I think you hit all the key points within 1984. Double-think is such an incredibly complex concept and, as you said, a reflection of its era that, somehow, never stops being relevant--regardless of when one reads it. "Some use it as a playbook" and I think it's because he captured key aspects of totalitarianism so well that it seems to be a manual. The best review of 1984 I have watched, honestly!

  • @MacScarfield

To be fair to Orwell, in the late 1940s when the novel was published, with Stalin ruling half of Europe, Moscow-aligned Communist Parties on the rise in Free Western Europe and Mao about to take over China, his fear for a totalitarian future was not at all unfounded. But yeah, I share your fear that some do view it as an instruction rather than a warning (might add Xi Jinping in China, with suppressing Hong Kong and the Uighur are definitely having a boot in their face😔). But for most of the West, I think Aldous Huxley hit the nail better with his “Brave New World”, of how people can give up their freedom for mere convenience and willingly choose ignorance… Another interesting Dystopian story, is John Brunner’s “Stand on Zanzibar”: While his fears over overpopulation is in hindsight similarly overrated as Orwell’s fear of Authoritarianism, like Orwell hitting the nail on the surveillance society, I feel Brunner is scarily relevant on the issue of political violence! Can recommend checking out the lectures by the late Professor Hans Rosling, which definitely gives hope for the future: Dystopia is not a given thing! PS: While impossible to know for sure, one of the interesting theories I have heard about “1984”, is that Britain/“Airstrip 1” is actually a sort of impoverished country akin North Korea, that lies to its own populace about its greatness and world power and uses the wars (real or staged) to exploit them.
