Inktober 2024 Book Review • Sketching Werewolves • Step by Step • Monsters Movieland Influences
Famous Monsters From Movieland was my favorite magazine as a kid. The interviews and spectacular behind the scenes pictures were a treasure for someone who loved all of the Universal monster movies. I have finished my Inktober 2024 sketchbook! 31 werewolf spreads! Take a look at what I was trying to accomplish with the layouts and images.

I'll be focussing on his werewolf transformations in his run on Werewolf by Night for Marvel Comics. Inktober has begun and my theme is werewolves! I am prepping for a new graphic novel and I'm excited to explore the life of a wolf man! Website- www.neilrkingillustration.com Amazon Store ...

Pat Oliphant is one of the great political cartoonists in history. I am a big fan of his line work and design abilities. He is a master of the genre with his biting wit and flawless technique. One of the great creator team ups was the series Big Guy and Rusty the Robot by Frank Miller and Geof Darrow in 1995. Darrow's work is other worldly and Miller serves up a story where Darrow can spread his wings and show his immense talent. The detail and scale of his work sets a new standard in comics. Each panel has so much information and sometimes the viewer can get lost in it all. The colo...

John Romita Sr is an icon. The work that he did was on most of the comics that I read as a kid. He was a great illustrator that inked many of the great penciler's covers as well as defining what Spider Man would be looked like. Romita was the bridge from Kirby in the 60s to his son JRJR in the 80s-90s. Every panel on every page filled with information. Genius work. I am sketching at the Navy Ya...

Emil Ferris created a masterpiece. Her magnificent, My Favorite Thing is Monsters, is one of the rare graphic novels that combines a great and profound story, lavishly rendered traditional illustrations, by an outsider artist. Ferris's book ca be viewed just for the artwork AND just for the story. Truly inspiring. I am prepping for conventions with some horror characters. I try to add emotion a...

Jessica Abel is a great creator known in the late 1990's for Art Babe and this gem, La Perdida. I love how she works with her brush line and how she integrates real backgrounds into the story lines. Her work seems suited for cinema as she moves the camera around the scenes with a great eye for detail when she needs it. I am visiting Watkins Glen, NY for the solar eclipse. I loved this video, mostly because your process is very much the same as mine. I was amazed at your process, because it was as if I was doing the drawing. I often start at the head such as you did here, instead of the body, as I was taught in Drawing one class (hahahaha). My Drawing One teacher would rail on me, a lot in class. Neil King, your reference to Drooker, is clever. I get it, more people know Drooker's name. Clever lad you are. I once saw Drooker live, doing his slide show, while narrating the story. It was the Flood story that he narrated, if my memory serves me right. Very impressive style Drooker has, and one of my Mural painting friends had a bromance about Drooker and his style. I am still a bit on the fence. I am more of a cartoonist and not as much an illustrator, as Drooker is. There is a huge difference, and many don't realize that there is a difference. My stuff is "creative" and not as much a drafting technique.
@@kernjames Thanks! I also see Drooker as a great graphic Designer. But I guess in the end I hope I am bringing a lot of his gifts into my books. Remembering how he handles certain situations. Taking a moment to look around in a scene, so the audience can get a feel for the world you are creating.
@@RandomActsofCartooning You have your own style. An issue I struggle with is how myself as a cartoonist always gets compared to other cartoonist of similar style. Then the critics go on to actually want me to be exactly the same as someone they admire, such as R. Crumb, in my case. Often it is a fellow artist that wants me be a cartoonist clone of Crumb or whomever. How can anyone be a Clone of Crumb? Maybe I could copy his drawing style, but I could never copy his machinations and perspective on the world. Nor do I want to copy his slant on the world. I don't know if you struggle with that same issue of others wanting you to emulate Drooker in every way possible, but I get it, if you do. I want to be me, and not some other guy.
@@kernjames Yeah, I don’t see a lot of Drooker in me but I’m a little Kirby, Kane, Ploog, Starlin, and Byrne. That’s just my comic book/graphic novel style. All this artists were compared to so many of their influences too. We all wind up being ourselves eventually.
@@RandomActsofCartooning well, I really like your style and approach. Keep it up!!
As someone with 0 artistic skills this is all so wonderful. I wouldn’t even know where to start with learning. Wowza! Now I REALLY appreciate Ploog’s talented career.
Thank you! He is a great representative of that period of comics. It was all about the line work.
Awesome transformational piece, excellent! I always felt Ploog had a love of Will Eisner, by the look of some of his emotional human characters. Cheers!
Thank you! Yes! And how he broke up the panels on the page on occasion.
Amazing work.🙌🏼🙌🏼✨😻
@@aguilartist Thanks!
Is that your book strange tales ? Link?
Hey! Yes! Use the link in the description on this episode. There is a link to amazon and all of my books. Thanks for the support!
I know tool talk can get annoying but the first pen you used seemed to be a felt tip AND waterproof. What is it?
Thanks for watching! It's a Pentel Arts Sign Pen Brush, Black Pigment Ink. It's a nice marker and I use it for broader lines than my fountain pen. Then I go to the Pentel Art Pocket Brush for dry brush lines.
@@RandomActsofCartooning very cool. I think I have one of those but it bleeds when I use water color. It has like a tan ‘butt" on it? Either way, thanks for getting back to me
In love with your channel! All yours drawings are from imagination ? Or do you use some sort of reference ?
Thanks so much! I try to do a variety of sketch work on the channel. I like going out and drawing from life as well as cartooning from my imagination. I do digital and traditional illustration. If you see a popular character, I just check if the costume is pretty close to correct. All the posing and situations are mine. I try to give viewers the best experience of how I work at conventions.
Nice work. Do you accept commissions?
Thanks! I do! If you would like to discuss it, contact me at neilrking@yahoo.com
I don't see enough people talking about how amazing 'My Favorite Thing i Monsters' really is. I can't wait to get Book 2 when it comes out. I loved your art, and the limited amount of colors you used. It was interesting too see how you were inspired by the graphic novel without copying the ballpoint pen style. Subscribed!
Thanks! She's so great! The perfect use of the graphic novel form.
Awesome
Thanks so much!
Cracking open a new John Byrne illustrated X-Men comic as a kid was absolute bliss. Good times, those were!
That team of creators! Every X-Men book from that point on had to be compared to them.
Adorei ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Brilliant ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks!
Very nice👍
Thanks so much!
How fun! It was cool to show your influence and how you applied that to the skulls. Looked like a great place to visit.
It's an amazing place to draw! Like going back in time!
Muy interesante 👍👍👍
Gracias
Always been a big Bill Sienkiewicz fan, especially his work on Elektra Assassin (showing my age!)
He's the best! Changed the look of comics!
you shouldnt do handheld with your camera....it bounces around too much; very annoying...
I do have the rendering on 2X speed. It does have a little shake. Is that what you're talking about?
or the influence section?
Nice drawing. I absolutely love Mark's artwork. His dry brush technique is incredible.
Masterful stuff! Great designer of images too!
This artwork is a true marvel! the artistic finesse in this piece is truly remarkable
Thanks so much!
Great content!! Loved this movie
There are few big budget family movies nowadays. They should have done the big push for 8-18 year olds.
@@RandomActsofCartooning there was a whole campaign against this movie, in an alternate universe the same movie is celebrated as Marvel’s big return to form. It was the comic book movie I wanted all my life and definitely a hit with the youth, Kamalas presence made for fresh and critical dynamics
Wonderful 👍
Thanks so much! Great place to sketch!
This is so cool! Thanks for all the useful tips.
Thanks for watching! Tell a friend!
Amazing work🙌🏻🙌🏻 love the style that goes all throughout the book very entertaining illustrations. Congratulations!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 hope is for sale at some point.
Thanks so much! Well, the problem with doing sketches of copyrighted characters is that you can't publish anything without permission. So this will have to be a one and done. Great fun in drawing her though!
Love Scott Pilgrim. The settings were based on his apartment and job at the time
It adds so much to the narrative. Great establishing shots!
You talking about that comic about the muse, then seeing you talk about your comic about a girl dreaming up her own hell and zombies, and the museum inspires me to keep pushing on and work on my comic.hope you get more like and follows so others can be inspired
Thanks so much! Keep it up! I've drawn more comics than I have ever published. Do it!
Eric Drooker, nice
He's so great!
I bet they wouldnt mind you sketching in-store. In fact, maybe you should talk to the manager and pitch setting a table like the conventions. Either people will be into it, or they'll ignore you and you'll get to work in peace! Those stores usually have a pretty dead atmosphere, no pun intended, and plenty of space. It might be cool to add something engaging and creative for a few hrs in store. The right manager would dig it. Nothin to lose by asking
Yes! Usually, I only have my sketchbook and a bic. So I can go anywhere. But filming it is still hard for me in a public place. Gotta work on it!
Beautiful piece of art. As always, your narration as to why you're creating an art piece is wonderful to listen to as you draw it. Please don't stop with the narration. It adds flavor to your artistic style as shown in your videos.
So nice of you! I have taught 30 years as an art educator and I can't help going through the process aloud.
Beautiful piece of art. And you explaining the mechanics about creating this art piece was "icing" to the cake. Liked the video a lot.
Thanks so much! There's nothing like drawing a dynamic picture on the spot for people!
I appreciate the discussion on depth; I’m often coaching students on techniques to achieve a sense of depth in their work.
Thanks! Line work is always battling with depth!
Marvelous! You break down the process and intentions well, and the sketch is, of course, beautiful. Such wonderful negative shapes!
Neil your a master, love watching you draw and narrate. It’s interesting to see your process.
Thanks so much, Annie! Love seeing all the work you are creating!
Just subscribed and as a bit of a cartoonist myself I love watching others work.
Thanks for the support! And I hope the channel will be entertaining!
Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to showing the multiple mediums that cartoonists can explore.
