A coat sew along part three of three
At last my coat is finished and I hope you will join me in the sewing room and see the final product.
I am hoping I may have inspired you to have a go at this or any other coat. I do believe that some of the steps (for example making the kick pleat) would be similar on other patterns.
This part covers joining up the back and front pieces previously assembled, adding the facing, putting in the sleeves, and the best bit - the finishing touches.
I chose to hand stitch my button hole, hems and cuffs and to bind my arm holes with bias cut pieces of the lining fabric once I had sewn them.
Overall I have enjoyed this make although it was quite a lot of work to sew the coat (after not seeing the pattern for about a year!) and film it too. The things I like about this pattern are the nice cut and fit that will suit so many body shapes and fabrics, the timeless style and the relative ease of the making process. I think I would prefer a fully lined coat next time so I will either find out how to make a generic lining and adapt this pattern or try another pattern that includes full instructions for full lining.
I would really appreciate it if you could comment and let me know and also what you think of this video. This is the first video I have done that is for an item of clothing and I have no idea really whether it will be any use over one made by , for example, an expert, or professional seamstress. My desire to make this video came out of a strong conviction that if I, as an amateur sewist who sometimes gets easily confused by written instructions could make it, so many others could too.
Making some of my own clothes has honestly been one of the single most liberating things I have done in my life. That might sound like a bold statement but it really is true. For a lot of us, what we wear is very important to us and it has nothing to do with vanity. We want to wear something comfortable, affordable, modest and appropriate for the occasion or use and personally I find it so rewarding to have mastered (sort of!) a few patterns that I can manage so that if I am going somewhere or need a coat, dress or jacket, I need only find a suitable fabric within budget, set some time aside and before I know it I have another favourite in my wardrobe! An added bonus is that I can often upcycle fabrics, and also choose ones that are eco friendly and sustainable if I want to.
Just to re-iterate
I HAVE NO CONNECTION WITH THE MAKERS OR SUPPLIERS OF THIS PATTERN.
Best wishes

A coat sew along part one of three
Переглядів 20114 годин тому
Are you ready to make a coat with me? This video has been inspired by making a coat a few winters ago, making the same one again for an early summer wedding in a lighter a fabric and then splashing out on some more expensive fabric and making the checked one you see in the video. If I can do this, then I feel sure you can too. I have no sewing training, I'm just very determined not to spend any...
Power cut sewing plans

Dear friends, just a quick video filmed on my phone when we woke up 2 days ago to a power cut and snow. I understand people all over the world suffer the problems of intermittent or no power all of the time but this is just a little film to share views of the old treadle machine by candlight, considerations of how I would actually sew by daylight only or candlelight on it and a look at the bird...
The smaller gift tote

Here I show you how to make the smaller tote bag this time on a conventional machine. I only demonstrated the dark green (larger) bag on the treadle sewing machine video from a couple of days ago and thought it would be useful to run through this again with the smaller one this time on my Husky machine so I am not preoccupied with treadling! All of this is fun but really I am just putting off t...

I managed to sew one of the bags on it and below there are the measurements for it and another tote as well. Easter gift or egg carry bag - free pattern

I hope you will enjoy this pattern I have devised. It came out of hurrying back from my chickens with too many eggs to carry along with other things and dropping several. I often leave them on the step and really needed a reusable bag that the recipient could return for re-...

Star Block Quilted Table Topper

Join me in my sewing room as I find some bright coloured fabric scraps to make some pretty star blocks in to a seasonal table topper. I found some Christmas fabric, some metallic thread to quilt it and just had some fun! Jones Model C Sewing Machine. How to thread and start sewing

What a lovely old sewing machine! I think it's a singer 66, with back clamping feet. I have a 99 which is smaller and also has not reverse. I bought a "new" Singer 201 from eBay which has got reverse and I forget and swing the fabric round still to finish seams. I'm jealous of your treadle, I'd love to get one. Thanks for the interesting video.
I'm so pleased you liked the video. I do love my treadle, every time I use it I'm amazed how easy it is to use.
By the way I got mine on Ebay too - it happened to be a seller local to me. I'm sure if there were no machines with reverse we'd all get used to flipping our sewing around or tying up our threads!!
I tried to buy one at a local auction, but got outbid! I'll keep my eyes open for another, hopefully one will come up soon. @@sewnonny2721
You look terrific! The coat turned out fantastic 😊
Thank you xx
I have been like you as far as rushing on garments or anything but it only happens when I’m making it for myself. I have finally slowed down and been able to have small successes. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it. 😊
Thank you! I hope you enjoy this and the rest of the project, best wishes Wendy
Love it! You did a great job😁🎉
Can't wait to show you the final result!
@ I am looking forward to seeing it. You’ve inspired me because I also love coats. 🧥 Yay!
Oh I'm so pleased, it's liberating to be able to make what you wish. I've just finished it this morning so hope to upload the last video later😀
@@sewnonny2721 excellent! Good for you 👏👏👏
Dear Wendy , I just finished watching your video, what a beautiful piece of fabric you have there. Can I share a couple of suggestions? Steam the fabric so as to take some of the sizing that comes from the spinning process. If the fabric is wool, you don't have to wash it like you would cotton or linen. Treat the salvage as useful to the garment, especially when you have just enough. When you were cutting the back pieces, you could have used the salvage. It will not unravel. Do not cut into the fabric. This weakens the cloth before you sew with it. Instead mark it. These suggestions have helped me tremendously 😊
Thanks Maria, what do you mean by don't cut in to the fabric?
And steaming to reduce sizing, do you mean pressing and steaming ❤😊
My iron can fire steam at things, but I've never tried it !
@@sewnonny2721 I couldn't see if you cut the notches outward or inward. It is better to not cut the notches but instead to mark them with Tailor's chalk .
@@sewnonny2721 exactly. Always use a pressing cloth, do not put the iron directly into the fabric. Also you can hover the iron and steam the fabric before cutting or sewing 🙂
Also...overlocking stretches the fabric out. Treat the garment as if you are sewing a couture garment
Yes I will!
Thanks for sharing your winter scenes. 💕
Good morning Wendy 🌄 this is one of the reasons I began to sew with a treadle. I live in the mountains and when we lose power, it's for a while. So I have learned, with the exception of my phone, to not depend on gadgets. I'm glad the power returned. Thank you for sharing ... Have a blessed day 😊
That sounds so appealingly romantic!; x
Thank you, loved the video, I especially like hearing the Treadle machine. The bag is a lovely design. Its relaxing to watch you sew. 🙋😘
Thank you, I'm really glad you liked it. Will be doing more definitely 😊
Wendy, i was so looking forward to sitting down with a delicious cup of tea and watch you sew on your lovely machine. 😍 can you disengage the winding bobbin mechanism while you are sewing? By the way, i use the treadle for all of my sewing. Garments, home decor and dog beds 😊 thank you Wendy for sharing. This is such a treat ... now to finish watching the video 🙂
Thank you Maria, just noticed that while watching it through😂
I love the bag 😊 so handy for keeping your crochet and hand sewing inside. Or also to use as a market bag, baby things... 😊
Thank you, I've filmed making the other one too, will finish that in the next day or so. Actually I'm just putting off what I know I now need to do, make the coat on my treadle! You've really inspired me to use it more, thank.you. must remember to disengage that winder first! 😅
@@sewnonny2721 you have encouraged me also, to continue to use it always. I have found that as long as I change the needle, it could sew through any fabric. 🙂
Отлично выполнено😊
I hope you enjoyed it 😊
Wendy, every video you have created is quite fun to watch. Sometimes, I don't have the time to watch them at the time that you post them, but I do go back and enjoy them while I am sewing or doing another craft. The video of you sewing with the treadle sewing machine was the one that brought me to your channel. :) I also sew with a treadle sewing machine. I do most of my sewing and quilting with it. I have since put away my electric sewing machines, because I find them just too noisy to use. :/ I am so glad that you are continuing sharing your talents with us :)
Gosh that is inspiring Maria, I'm thinking I should use my treadle more, like you. I think that should be a goal this year, thank you, sp pleased you are enjoying my videos, hope you have a great 2025 😊 x
Hi Ada, thank you for your message, I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. Sounds like you sew a lot, or have done, and other crafts too, its great to be creative, good for the soul! ❤x
Happy New Year, Wendy! Thank you for sharing your personal story with us. I enjoy watching your videos and I admire your adventurous spirit. I am quite a bit older than you and I have also done a lot of crafting, including sewing clothes for myself and making bags. I mostly worked from paterns. I never made a winter coat, though. Long ago when I lived in Germany I did a sewing course and the teacher helped me to sew a summer jacket. But I used cheap lining and it shrank in the wash and the outer didn't , so the jacket was ruined. I don't sew much anymore, no clothes, because I am a perfectionist, unfortunately. I still wear some of the summer dresses I made several years ago. Anyway, I look forward to watching your video on making the coat. love Ada

You are a Blessing😇 Now we can use this sewing machine. It is new to us & quite a puzzle before your clear wonderful explanations. ❤
That's great, let me know if you have any questions, will do my best to help. Happy sewing!
Leave me a comment, will you try this project? I hope so! ❤ would love to hear what you're making ❤
Glad you knew how to put the thread in. I was clueless. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you. This is a great video when I put the bobbin holder in it doesn’t click in just sits there. Do you think that’s a problem?
Hi, when it's in place, can you pull the thread upwards and it comes out smoothly and easily?
It is very handy as an apron too. I use mine for pegs for hanging out washing ❤
I love that front pocket -- and it's so easy! My first thought was that it would be perfect for gardening, but by the end of the video I I realized it could also be used as the basis for a super cute handbag.
Glad you like it. Hadn't thought of that! Could make a great bag ❤
This video is so amazingly helpful, it was very difficult from my old machine thank you!!! :D
Love this kind of star block, so wonderful for scraps, it is still on my to do list. I have heard it called the wonky star. Great video!
Do you not worry about if the squares are square? If you do not sew the seam all the same size then it would cause the blocks to not be square. I notice some were not square. That does not trouble you, so many people say you must square up your blocks.
Thank you. I'm glad you like it. Yes! They are quite wonky but I do like the random look. ❤️
Hi, I just make the blocks as best I can. In the video you can see me trimming the rows straight. I found it was straight enough. I hope that helps.
While newest gadgets are great you’ve proven it not necessary! A machine, pencil and scissors are the only necessary tools to achieve lovely blocks!
Thank you, hope you enjoyed it
What a nice idea! Thank you for sharing this.
❤❤will you try this patchwork?
❤❤Do you have an old machine like this? Please add a comment😊❤❤
These kind of machines are the best! They sew so beautifully :)
Looking forward to using it again😊

That was so inspiring Wendy! A little beyond my skills etc, but fascinating to watch. Your workroom looks amazing, like an Aladdins Cave of craft treasures!!
Oh that's so nice to hear, thank you! I want to inspire, have a go, you might surprise yourself!
Thanks for the helpful video! Do you happen to know how to stitch backwards..?😊❤️
On this machine you just press the button in the middle dial . Hope that helps!

BEAUTIFUL ❤ Thank you for sharing 😊
LOVELY !! Thanks so much.
This is really an interesting concept! Im curious what you do with the panels? Would you make a quilt top with it? I could see a large bag made this way as well!!
Thank you, Yes I might but this one is half way to becoming a bag. I will post the video on that in the next few days. I decided to start making patchwork like this after doing a few bags with rectangular pieces and I just fancied something a bit more organic. Some quilters make landscape pictures like this, I might have a go at that too. Best wishes Wendy
