    Tubular? WTF. For what do you need an app to watch videos on such a tiny screen? It is just stupid to watch videos on a phone.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr 10 днів тому

      Which is why I mostly use it on my tablet. On the phone it does come in handy for downloading music tracks though! I've got no problems watching YT videos on a small device. For some people, this is the only device they have, so it's nice to have the option!

    • @everlastinggodstopper

      @alexwr I rather lean back and watch videos on my TV. I do not like tablets because they are like micro tvs.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr 10 днів тому

      @ That's fair enough, you do you! For me though, a tablet is perfect, I am not far-sighted; my near vision is fine, so I can get the same experience as a 50inch TV on my lap with a better, OLED screen. It also lets me watch whatever I want without disturbing the other people around me. That said, I had a quick look, and the supported open source alternatives to YT are seriously lacking or basically non-existent on Android TV devices, so yeah...

    • @everlastinggodstopper
      @everlastinggodstopper 10 днів тому

      @alexwr I am not farsighted. I just do not find it relaxing to hold something in my hand or have something lying on my knees where I have to look at. It is much more relaxing to sit on my chair lean back and watch the video on my TV screen.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr 10 днів тому

      Don't worry, I wasn't suggesting that you were, it just works fine for me it all. I think I'd have to connect a PC up to a TV because I really hate TV interfaces and remotes. Also a desktop YT app would work amazingly on a huge screen!

    Thanks for sharing your stuff. I refuse to use any app that takes all the rights from my phone. I'd like more reviewers to show the dangers of using such open apps. This is important if anyone is using their phone for gig work. People are using jammers to block our phones doing gig work. I use a really good VPN for my business that has blocked the bad ones out and allowed me to gain more work. Using open apps on a business phone is not a good idea. I stlll gave you thumbs up for there is useful info for those that use the phone for personal use

I need an app that write the notes for me of class teachings/courses in uni by listening, so I don't have to type anything. (only putting pictures if needed or correcting/organizing it better). I LOVE music and collect a lot to play 'Locally', so, the combination of the VERY POWERFUL music player app - 'PowerAmp' and 'Seal' (through F-Droid), I can use 'Seal' to download music from various sources at high bitrates, and then use 'PowerAmp' to play them, and with the players MANY features, functions and capabilities I now have a VAST collection of music to play WHENEVR & WHEREVER I like on and off line. This helps as I DON'T need to subscribe to multiple pricey music streaming services (as you'll find one streaming service will have a band or track you want, while others don't and visa versa). So, IF you love music too, this combo of apps.... Will DEFINITELY serve you well! 😏👌🎶 😎🇬🇧

    Great video and great choices I use most of these but I constantly have issues with Tubular (and Newpipe) where they get broken and you need to wait on updates to fix. Luckily I mostly use youtube on a desktop so it's not a big deal for me but it must be frustrating for mobile focused users. Some other great foss apps I always recommend are Antennapod for podcasts, Localsend for file transfers, Redreader for reddit.

      Yeah, I keep switching between Tubular, Newpipe and Grayjay, but the Tubular interface and additions are my favourite, especially on a tablet... AI (Artificial Incompetence) can produce more, faster and cheaper. The problem is ... we don't need more, we have more than enough already. We need actually better quality. But AI just lowers the average quality of content. Why is AI used anyway? Because for the dominant business model of the Internet quality of content does not matter. Everything is based on personalized ads. The worth of the person engaging with the content is measured for or by the advertiser. It does't matter if you try to sell your stuff to the perfect victim in the context of a high quality article created by a human or in context of some BS made up by AI. The latter can be even beneficial, because your ad might be more attractive compared to BS content. To stop AI from drowning us in the brown stuff, we have to kill the personalized ads driven economy.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr 16 днів тому

      Thanks for your perspective! I hate that we have somehow decided that personalised ads were a good system in the first place... It's bizarre to me that this is where we're at in our digital lives. And you're absolutely right, we are so totally overstimulated and swamped with nonsense, even before AI went mainstream. It really shows that we really need quality, even if it's not immediate. I may have to steal Artificial Incompetence... I like that...

    Tuner was an unexpected mention but I share your thoughts about it nonetheless. It's a great app for tuning instruments. Overall, everything that you've covered is great. The FUTO project and GRAYJAY are projects by Louis Rossmann and his associates that aim to create a great product, although FUTO still needs some development. I used to use Quillnote but it is no longer supported and now I am on Obsidian, but what you propose is great for a notetaking app when you need something written quickly.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr 16 днів тому

      A good tuner app is harder to find than I though on the Play Store, and this one covers all the bases and more! Thought it needed a mention! Grayjay has a long way to go, but at least Google can't block it (legally at least) because it doesn't use their APIs at all. They just released a desktop version which is very VERY Alpha, but it still works at least! I did use Quillnote for a bit, but from what I can tell, Notally was forked from Quillnote when it stopped receiving updates, and NotallyX from Notally for the same reason. I use Obsidian as well for longer notes, I did mention them in my original script, but decided to cut it out of the video because it was a little off-topic as it isn't open source. Obsidian is by far the best (desktop) note-taking app I have found though.

    Seems a bit overzealous to go after them for continuing to make content. There are new entrants to the world of minimalism who might prefer new videos. Regular reinforcement with new content, even if repetitive, probably helps many people on their journey.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr Місяць тому

      That's fair! In the end, I can only put the onus on myself, and I tried to get that across as much as possible :) in the end, it's me. I don't have to watch it of I don't want to. And I don't think there are many who are actively producing (more or less) the same videos over and over again, but they do exist! I might go into content curation at a later point, but you really start to notice the repetition if you only follow 40-60 people on YT and remove the algorithmic elements entirely.

    I don't think it is fair to blame AI for the fact that the vast majority of people are lazy imbeciles who think that "senior AI prompting tech" is any more valid then job titles typically invented to hire women and non-whites, like "Vice President of Diversity". Most AI slop is coming from jeets trying to scam people, or "seo" their garbage websites. There is no doubt that AI is going to enable a massive torrent of slop, the likes of which has never before been witnessed, but a little discernment can go a long way. I recently started using AI in a productive manner, basically to help me with the work I do, which is legal research and document drafting as well as programming. It is great for both, and I didn't need help with either, but AI has allowed me to save substantial time without compromising quality. There is something sinister afoot. The current iteration of Microsoft's Copilot and ChatGPT 4o are solid, but the new o1 model is terrible in the sense that it almost entirely unwilling to consider "unconventional" approaches to issues. This is more on the drafting side, because things that 4o may initially object to, but will eventually assist with if certain laws or statutes are added to the context, with o1 the same procedure results in nothing but arguments. This is by design. They are already culling the usefulness of AI models that are available to the normies by heavily censoring them, restricting their output, such that they can only really be used to produce slop. They also don't want certain factual information being revealed through AI interactions. So, that being said, use the adblocker and keep a level head. I'd also suggest downloading freely available AI models like llama-3.3, because the future versions are likely to be heavily restricted. The world is full of distractions; the only way to make it out alive is to repent and put your faith in Jesus Christ. Do that, then use the things available as tools to do the Father's will. There are no coincidences.

    Oh dear. Another anti-AI video. It's a tool and will produce "slop" if you want to use it that way. One could say that videos like this are "slop" - just lazy criticisms ("anything AI") that don't advance anything.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr Місяць тому

      Anti-generative AI, for the most part. There are other uses for neural networks beyond stealing artists work and puking out the leftovers. You're right, all these things are tools. But AI is more than a tool because it is intended to replace humans. LLMs replace human conversation. Generative AI replaces artists. Each generation of tech has removed more meaningful jobs from the public sphere, but we've never had a technology that tries replaces so much in one fell swoop. Not just mindless jobs, but artistic endeavours too. One could say that my video is slop. They would be wrong. There's nothing lazy about writing, filming, colour grading and editing a video, trying to keep it as concise as possible so as to try not to waste people's time. Criticising something that other people have already criticised doesn't make it 'slop' or pointless. It means there are probably issues that people should be paying attention to with this tech because enough people are speaking out about it. Damn right I hope it doesn't advance anything. I hope it encourages less advancement. We need to have serious conversation about the way we are moving forward as a society if this is what we are doing with the resources we have available.

      @@alexwr If you believe AI is "stealing" artists' work then you need to do some more study on how AI works. It's sad that your video is just the usual Luddite diatribe with nothing useful to add. Best of luck to you - I hope that one day you can join the large number of artists who are already using AI to their advantage. Merry Christmas.

    The best slops are shot vertically. It makes up over 90% of the clips on any Daily Dose of the Internet video. Almost all of China shoot video this way since 2018. This slop trend is not about to fade any time soon. I'm afraid we simply have to wipe out the planet and start over.

      Maybe AI could work for dream sequences specifically because it looks so uncanny... I'm certainly not denying that you have worked and put effort into your video. The shot choice is very good, and the pacing is great! It would have been even cooler to see a non-AI version, at least for the Peterson talking sections. You can't exactly compare the two videos in any meaningful sense. One is an experimental narrative about Kermit Peterson having a nightmare, and the other is a simple commentary video. I still had to write a script, film it, edit out the fluff, colour correct and grade. Obviously a commentary video, at least on the filming style is lower effort than a narrative because there's so many more choices to consider with narrative filmmaking. I'd like to see you develop your skills further because you've clearly got talent! You and I both need to start properly filming narrative stuff because it's good fun!

      I just want to ask a question… because you’re kind of coming off a certain way, and I want to make sure that you’re intending to come off this way… and that it’s not something that’s just unintentional… Are you saying that people who don’t have the time or the resources to do things the “right way” are just putting out “slop”? Because it is very very common for this particular type of conversation to start out as “oh just typing in a few quick prompts and then pasting it online to try to get a bunch of views and then doing that a bunch of times to hope your channel can grow so you can make money is probably not the best way to do things”. And then, eventually if not rather immediately, it devolves into “anyone that uses any of these tools is cheating and uninspired and undisciplined and taking shortcuts and compromising artistic expression and should do everything the way it was originally done, otherwise they are thieves and plagiarists”. That is an age old gatekeeping attitude and behavior that has prevented many individuals over the course of history from feeling confident in expressing themselves for fear of ridicule for not living up to the standards of the people who police the communities of self expression. I think everyone agrees that if you’re just clicking a button and then posting what comes out, you’re not really having any creative input on what’s being generated. The only purpose someone serves in that scenario is merely to initiate the process by which some new piece of content comes into existence, which plausibly fails to meet the basic criteria for expression or creation. But the second a person starts curating what gets put out, and refining it to get something that is more like what they are trying to say, then they are already transitioning from a passive initiator to that of a creator using technology as a means to express him or herself. I agree that people should become fluent, as much as is within their resources and opportunities to do so, in all the different types of tools and tactics for self expression, but that is ultimately a personal choice, and it doesn’t inherently handicap or degrade that person’s potential output. In fact, there are a great many examples of timeless and distinctive art that existed within its own bubble or vacuum, outside of the perspective or the culture or knowledge of conventions considered to be basic disciplines or procedures to bring that art about. Often the most distinctive art can be made by those who are ignorant of its rules and culture. And part of that unconventionality includes new ways to automate the process itself. I believe it does have value to gain the perspective of learning about the more primitive methods of how a task has been accomplished in the past, regardless of whether someone actually has the time or the resources, or the inclination, to try the old-fashioned way themselves, but they also have the right to make the choice to cut that part of the process out and focus more on the parts of the process that give them the most inspiration, or that give them the best opportunity to express themselves as fully as they can within the bounds of whatever their limitations are( be they monetary, physical, social or temporal…) without fear of reprisal and humiliation rituals. This is the most frustrating aspect of this debate, and it really bothers me, because I don’t disagree that there’s a glut of lazy quick clip and paste content (and AI is streamlining that) but I genuinely believe that most people, especially as they get older than like five or six, will start to gravitate towards the content that actually has something significant to say, and then the only real difference is that we all have different sensibilities. Endlessly generating effortless and meaningless content is unfulfilling. It’s sort of self regulating. The gatekeeping comes in with determining for yourself (and by the natural extension of your level of clout or respect in a given community for a much larger group of people) what is and what is not acceptable. Some of us like basic or simple or silly content, some of us like complex or analytical or provocative content…some of us are introspective, some of us are plain spoken, but that doesn’t mean that any of it is bad or wrong, which is why I really don’t like the concept of nourishment in regards to art. Patrick Stewart loves dirty limericks. He loves Beavis and Butthead. Other people will look at that type of art and say “oh I don’t know how anyone with a working mind could like something like that. It’s just complete junk. Honestly, it shouldn’t even exist. It’s not real art.” This will always bother me. Because art is subjective, it is always in the eyes and the ears and in the perception of the beholder…as is the value or merit or what you would call nourishment. The human body has certain basic material and chemical needs that it cannot function without, but the human mind is far less limited in that capacity. That’s part of the reason that the world can be kind of scary sometimes, because what one person finds inspirational another might find maniacal. Just my two cents. Sorry for the novel. TL:DR Gatekeeping=bad, the value of expression is subjective.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr Місяць тому

      Some of it looks great from a purely aesthetic perspective. I would argue it still contributes to the overall decline though. For certain things, I think AI can make sense: - Sky replacements and object removal in photo/video. - Speech recognition. Really useful for live translation and accessibility. - Better text to speech. Again for accessibility. Small, localised and highly specialised AI tools seem to be the best ones out there. All these things can potentially be used for good or bad, but human nature is the path of least resistance. If an AI will get the job done, even if not well, then we will keep relying on them more heavily and neglect ourselves and our own development.
