The ULTIMATE guide to luxury home automation
While I'm guilty myself as I've spent what many would probably consider "crazy money" on various audio cables in the past... Considering some of the truly exorbitant prices for some of these esoteric and exotic cable & power conditioning products, combined with the number of consumers who are buying them, it seems as if we could at least begin to make a dent into our society's much more pressing and IMPORTANT issues, such as hunger, homelessness, or mental and physical health care. The aftermarket or 3rd party audio cable industry is currently approaching nearly $1 BILLION USD...ANNUALLY! So, it's not really surprising to see just how many major companies as well as smaller boutique cable companies continue to enter this marketplace to try to grab their piece of that ever-growing pie, which is steadily increasing at the compound annual growth rate of 7.6% (CAGR)! That's solid investment territory right there! No wonder these companies are marketing and pushing these products so aggressively. In addition, from an audio equipment manufacturing perspective, these types of products are relatively easy to manufacturer. AND, unlike complex electronic audio components such as streamers, DACs, preamps, amplifiers, or loudspeakers, the time, money, and effort that's required to warranty, provide tech support, SHIP, and/or dedicate to keeping back-stock of ALL replacement parts for 10 years (required by law in many countries in the E.U.) and provide authorized maintenance service & repairs for these cable products, is almost nil and laughable. In addition, you really have to TRY to effectively damage or compromise these types of products! Further still, many of these manufacturers require (or at the very least "strongly suggest") a "burn-in" or "break-in" period that is almost impossible to achieve before their exchange or refund policy expires, LOL. Talk about the Dream Business Model and "EASY MONEY"! If I could "do it all over again", I'd go straight into this business! Just the explosion in the last 5 or so years in the availability and sales of custom 3rd party Headphone and IEM cables is BONKERS! I would bet that some IEM manufacturers are probably just breaking even or potentially taking a loss on the IEMs themselves, just to make their real profits on the additional cable and accessory sales where the profit margins and ROI are EXPONENTIALLY higher. /END OF RANT... P.S. And just to clarify, NO, I am NOT a 100% "Cable Denier". However, IMPE, I believe that in MOST cases there are much better ways to spend your money with the goal of significant improvements to your system, listening room, and overall listening experience.
WHY does your expensive home entertainment system still suck??? As per the opening scene in this video, it is obviously because you aren't drinking enough alcohol to make it sound better! LOL Yeah, let's get inebriated and then swap some cables to try and hear and determine which one has better "synergy" with the system and "sounds better", LOL. I can't see how that could ever go wrong, ha! Just FYI, I'm NOT a cable denier... I'm a multi-instrument musician with a home recording studio and know from first-hand experience that properly designed & constructed cables (or poor quality cables) CAN make a difference. However, IME, in 98% of cases these differences are so minute and primarily just a result of sighted expectation or confirmation bias that I'd much rather reach for a good EQ that is properly implemented in order to affect those changes, much like any sensible recording/mixing/mastering engineer would while actually producing all of the incredible music that you are listening to in these comparisons. And TBF, over the years I've used MANY different types of cables from manufacturers such as Cardas, Nordost, Van den Hul, Kimber Kable, IXOS, MIT, AudioQuest, GRIMM Audio TPM & TPR, Sommer Cable, Blue Jeans, etcetera...to my own custom DIY cables. In the studio, we simply DO NOT resort to "cable swapping" in order to effect any of the many different sonic characteristics that so many audiophiles ALWAYS use when describing the "sound" of a particular "special" or "exotic" cable versus another. In the typical studio there can be MILES of wiring that interconnects all of the various equipment, and it would simply be too cost-prohibitive to wire the entire studio in order to eliminate EVERY "weakest link in the (signal) chain", especially without knowing 100% in advance whether (or not) it will actually "sound better" and provide good so-called "synergy" in the system until AFTER it is all installed. :/ And YET, "somehow" all of the incredible recordings that audiophiles tend to use for these types of listening comparisons and demos which are produced in these studios that are wired throughout with just basic but reliable and well made cables still manage to sound friggin' incredible in your high end system. IOW, IF the SQ that you are hearing isn't ALREADY fully captured and "baked into" the recording itself, there would be No Way for you to hear or experience it in the first place, no matter what system and/or what cables you used. For example, let's consider the amazing recordings and albums that were recorded and produced in the 1950s &1960s, such as Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue, The Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out!/Take Five, Jazz at the Pawnshop, or any number of amazing classical symphony orchestra recordings... Very few of these so-called "high end" or exotic 3rd party cables were available or even considered back then for recording studios OR HiFi playback systems. But, for some reason these days we believe that we absolutely MUST use some type of exotic or "high end" cable in our playback system in order to coax the best possible "synergy" and performance from our systems??? Sure, there are certain studios that ARE actually wired with better quality "high end" cabling, but these are extremely rare and very few & far between...and primarly in located in Europe. ...I digress.
Audioquest, the company who's cables were measured by others and proven to not do as claimed and measure no different to zip cord, with batteries that did nothing Audioquest claimed. Audioholics and Audio Science Review highlighted a lot of the foo. What is funny about the snake oil, all that detail they claim is masked due to poor power, well if it was masked it would be ON THE BLOODY RECORDINGS! Get that into your head for a minute, all that magic foo they talk about is comming from recordings made with none of the FOO. So is power was masking the detail, the recording would be masked vocals, and no amount of expendature later would add anything or remove anything from that recording. All your doing is replaying what those cheap cables captured.
Garth, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. ...I've seen some of your musical performances -- they've all been really creative, sensitive and surprising!
Well done! I recall speaking with Garth in 1997 while he was at Furman. IT-Ref was the piece. He was so helpful. Today I have a 5000.
Also most if not all surge protectors you buy are non-sacrificial. I've been using the same Monster and Belkin surge protectors for 10+ years now and they've gone through several electrical outages, voltage fluctuations, surges and still running and not once did anything fry or go kaput on me. And I have hooked up thousands of dollars worth of gear in it, not to mention I trust them with my entire photo and film studio PC setup at home with a dozen backup hard drives.
First thing. Start off with whiskey to impair your judgement... lol... so obvious... 😂
@OCDHiFiGuy ...and to loosen your wallet, LOL.
No Sonos at all in your systems? That's a bit of a disservice to customers. How do they manage music? What luxury home doesn't have some element of Sonos???
Why offend everyone before you start talking? I take it that you are an alcoholic.....
This is unfortunately classic snake oil 101: Make up a problem and sell the “ solution.” The audioquest representative claimed there were some audible “ omnipresent” type of noise that their products get rid of. High-end companies are always claiming some sort of technical problem , claiming that they have solved the technical problem, but never showing their work and just kicking it out to marketing. Where are the measurements showing this “ omnipresent noise?” Where are the measurements showing the audio quest equipment has removed that noise? Most important , where is the data showing that this noise is even audible let alone omnipresent? Such claims could be vetted via blind testing. But of course they never are . What you get are the company claims, and then the product is simply sent out for audiophiles to “ listen for themselves.” And since bias effects are going to allow for enough people to “ hear that lowered noise floor” there’s always going to be a market for this stuff. They wouldn’t want to tip the boat by a more thorough examination of their claims. And the ironic thing about this whole “ lowering the noise floor” stuff is that it seems to be bottomless. You can just keep buying more and newer products that “ lower that noise lower even more” as if human hearing is unlimited. At some point, I suppose if you build up enough audioquest products and your system, you’re going to run into the residual noise from the big bang. But I’m sure they’ll come out with a product for that too ;-)
Spot on. The measurements isn´t present, because it can´t be measured. The thing about radiowaves disturbing your hi-fi system, was a problem in the tube days, when you needed high gain for high impedance magnetic cartridges. Nowadays this is no longer the case. Generally you have low impedances all over a well designed system, thus radiowaves are no bother. Good measurement equipment can easily detect any kind of noise very much lower, than human hearing stands a change to detect. In my experience most "High End" solutions to spooky problems, that no one ever heard of, almost always ends up making the sound worse. Idiosyncratic solutions tends to make your life more complicated, and many good people end up, leaving the hobby, because it all seems to be impossible, if you cannot afford your own powerplant, and superconducting cables, hovering racks and make up more stuff you´ll need yourself. That said, it will never make any sense, to indtroduce a powerconditioner, if you don´t know excactly what will be connected to it. You might even cause or exacerbate resonant behaviour or something like that. For the curious some one did the hard work for you making measurements og the output from a Niagara 1200, and compared it to the wall outlet here: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/audioquest-niagara-1200-review-power-conditioner-surge-protector.25443/page-17#post-2039248
lol because avr is for multichannel decoding, not the best sound quality like audiophile DAC and amps. source=Apple Music lossless quality I prefer Cardas Parsec RCA cables
Would be great if, for this budget, they would show a test setup and measurements so that others can verify and confirm. It's probably done for a reason and it's a pity they are not challenged more. Others published test results and not in their favour.
Simply another Bullshit! Audio "infomercial' From a moribund brand just to add insult to injury.
Why are they deleting so many comments here?
They deleted mine, then I just kept reposting until they stopped. They don't want negative comments on AudioQuest
Afraid to loose the sponsor?
No comments have been deleted. Thanks for coming back to the video though! We’re glad you’re enjoying the discussion 👍
Where can the result be found of these measurements and what the setup was, so that it can be verified and confirmed by others? Vendors should be challenged more to publish these.
I have worked for an audio company that sold AudioQuest and we all knew they didn't make a difference! I know people who worked at UpScale Audio that have said the same thing also, that the only reason they sell products like AudioQuest is for customers who truly believe (The definition of believe; accept that (something) is true, especially without proof.) that it makes a difference in their setup. There is a great video on youtube where they do a blind listening test with Klipsch Lascala and in one test they use the AudioQuest Niagra power conditioner, the other they didn't use the $10,000 conditioner, and they preferred the setup WITHOUT the conditioner. Also, keep on deleting my comments and I will come back and repost them. Garth, you and your team deserve to be put behind bars.
Exactly. One can claim 'we measured' and we did 'extensive testing' and 'blind testing' but there is no scientific proof. I also see my comments have been deleted. Way to run a channel. Not once in the ENTIRE video did I see any measurements.
Growing up down the road from McIntosh in Binghamton, NY. Pushed me to be a McIntosh fan, all of my gear is McIntosh, and I just installed the McIntosh MPC-1500 Power Controller. This single device made a huge difference with my overall sound. Great discussion! I totally agree with your power specialist!
AudioQuest is pure snake oil.
Have you tried it?
@@eldogo1 I've seen plenty of videos of people testing their cables and determining that they make no audible difference whatsoever.
@ seeing plenty of videos is very different from you actually using/testing them. Would you just go off of a UA-cam video regarding a car and won’t test drive it at the dealership?
@@eldogo1 Ridiculous analogy. A car is not promising to do something it doesn't. If it is working mechanically, it will get you from point A to point B. AudioQuest's cables don't do what they promise. They do not improve the sound. People have measured their performance and found they make no audible difference. But if you want to be gullible, go ahead and waste your money. Or maybe AudioQuest gives them to you for free for giving them advertising on your channel?
@ So you are still basing your opinion on UA-cam videos. My question still stands, have you personally used them? It’s not wasting money when you can return them.
This is total bullshit, just have good speakers and good acoustisks and you are in a good view.

Wouldn't you want maximum attenuation, not flat attenuation of noise?
That's funny that Audioquest is your sponsor on this video because they suck big time. Talk about a rip of cable company. Speaking of Audioquest sucking, you've got quite the mid-fi system yourself. It probably only sounds good to you because you're always drunk when you're listening. So this is probably not a video that you are qualified to make.
This comment will be deleted soon
@@carterleynes6380 if he's thin skinned, he'll delete it. But if you're going to title your video this way, you should have thick enough skin to accept criticism. First of all, this is a horrible room layout. And what's with the frickin' window in the center, lol. Just measure the frequency response of the room and it becomes obvious that you'll never hear how good your speakers and electronics sound in such a sucky room. Second, what's with all the alcoholic bottles on the left wall? They will definitely affect the frequency response of the room (i.e. sound brighter) where they're positioned. And if this guys drinks that much alcohol while listening (i.e. alcoholic), he might as well stick with a Sonos setup because he'll never be able to discern good sound. As for his equipment, he's got a decent amp and preamp (not high end by any means) but everything else is mid-fi. So yeah, this system in this room sucks but with all the alcohol he imbibes, he probably thinks it sounds good.
well if power cables are important then what about the electric wiring inside the walls ? shouldn't also be changed?, this is conmen BS
Have you tried it?
It's the last meter that is important 😂. Oh and the plug as well. Same for speaker cables, but the the opposite. In the speaker it's basic copper wire 😂

@@pjhandle have you tried it? You can easily buy one and return if you aren’t satisfied. I think it’s best to comment on your experience rather than speculation. Just make sure your system can take advantage of it. Have a quality display and processor.

My entire system is audioquest for a reason.
The reason is called the placebo effect
Why ? Because you got it 50% off ??
As an electrical engineer I state that 90% is pure marketing talk and is not backed up by reproducible proof and measurements. Check the videos from Amir (audio science) and Audioholics where they provide the proof and measurements. Yes they call it snake oil and I agree. But of course, cables are like jewelry many guys.
@@pjhandle Appreciate your input! While it’s true that marketing can sometimes overshadow substance, Garth breaks down measurable factors like noise reduction and signal integrity that high-quality cables address. It’s less about ‘jewelry’ and more about performance in specific setups - definitely worth exploring.
Have you tried it?
@@Architechne Been in this industry a long time. No doubt AudioQuest makes very very well made and engineered cables. However, mentioning measurable factors and actually showing measurements are two different things. One can discuss all they want about noticeable, measurable, tangible but are there scientific results they can share and others can replicate? For one, I see A LOT of snake oil in this industry: 4 port network switches that are $1000-$2500, $100 for a 3 foot network cable that is audiophile, $1000 headphone cables (seriously?) and etc etc. I have gone through many cables from $50-$500 and I can't for one really tell if there is any difference. I think a UA-cam channel even used a coat hanger to show how it can transmit current and make your speakers sing. Anyway, expensive cables make sense when your speakers are of extremely high budget. Just like your car. If you buy a car for $200,000+, there's no way you're putting on a set of tires for $1,000, right? I mean you're going to spend at least $5,000-$10,000 for a set of tires. This is how I look at cables. Keep them within 2%-5% of your total speaker budget and you'll be fine.

There is a great video on youtube where they do a blind listening test with Klipsch LaSscala and in one test they use the AudioQuest Niagra power conditioner, the other they didn't use the $10,000 conditioner, and they preferred the setup WITHOUT the conditioner. Also, keep on deleting my comments and I will come back and repost them. Garth, you and your team deserve to be put behind bars.

Eye-opening episode! You wouldn’t think you could improve your setup *that* much with cables. Loved the ground noise demo too. Great episode!
You can't.
The usual suspect is the people that make the TV....They give you some wiz-bang,, best thing since sliced bread screen....and when you go around back you're lucky if you have a 3.5 mm walkman headphone jack..Company couldn't see its way clear to provide some rca audio output jacks for that 5 minute hookup to a decent amplifier..
Are you aware of ARC and eARC?
Thank you folks for this great interview. So informative. I'm not a believer in budget busting snake oil cables, but they must, at minimum, be of proper size to carry the load. I sure would like to experience a properly geared and tuned HT so I can find just how crappy my 7.2.4 room is. I bet my budget system SUCKS to the max! Without having certified media to play through my gear into my bottom rung living room I believe there is no way to positively measure/judge the quality of the gear or the room. However, is any of the time and money spent on this hobby actually important? Yeah, it's not when compared to a warm, dry home and quality food. But, dang it - a peaceful and pleasing music listening session or clear yet dynamic movie is sometime to strive for. Learning and using REW is a must and upgrading the power to my living is a must. Maybe it's time to bypass the internal power supplies and connect to battery banks.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s great to hear you enjoyed the interview. Totally agree - sometimes it’s not just about the gear, but the experience it creates. Your setup sounds pretty awesome, and diving into tools like REW and power upgrades could definitely elevate it. Keep chasing that peaceful listening session - it’s what it’s all about!
@@Architechne Thanks a bunch! I've been on several year long adventure trying to build a system worthy of being proud of. Just sucks that I can't get many folks interested in demos. Well, maybe it takes a $100k + room to be impressive enough for them 🤨. Oh well. I'll enjoy it as best I can. I guess it's best no one knows I have nearly a 100 pounds of amplifiers(NAD & Elan) running the 7.2.4 system. hehehe I wish you and yours a great rest of 2024 and a much better 2025.
Awesome I nothing compared to what I have learn and remembered in this show. This is it !
Glad you liked the episode! Thanks for watching 👍
The worse cables I ever owned solid core and of course broke.
Oof, ya that’s frustrating! Solid core cables can be tricky, but quality and build design matter a lot. Garth touches on durability in the video - might be worth a watch!
Really enjoyed this. I worked for Dolby Labs for 17 years. They had an underground cinema, projection room and listening room. The whole of the underground structure stood on huge anti-vibration springs/rubber feet. The listening room was just full of Linn kit. Lunch times were awesome. i was spoiled though as I could never afford all that at home. I remember being involved in the blind listening tests for the very first Dolby Digital for films. Good times.
That’s awesome! Sounds like Dolby Labs was an incredible place to work. An underground cinema and all that gear? Total dream setup - thanks for sharing 👍
@@Architechne It was awesome. I met my wife there. She was in charge of licensing for things like the World Cup in Dolby Surround. Watching that in surround in a private cinema sitting in arm chairs on a 60 ft wide screen. Just amazing. I'll never forget it.
Because most of the recordings suck. Hopelessly compressed.
Exactly
We feel your pain - compressed recordings can be a letdown. But even then, great cables can help you squeeze every last drop of quality out of them. Worth a try!
@@Architechne “Squeeze every last drop of quality out of them” As if bad and compressed recordings will suddenly become open, dynamic and audiophile because of cables😂
@@Kukkema Good catch - it was totally a figure of speech! You’re sharp for picking up on that. While cables can’t make bad recordings audiophile-grade, they can help preserve what’s there. Thanks for keeping us on our toes!
I'm glad we all use Sonos so we don't have to worry about any of this
Is that a joke 😂
@@nesq4104 Yes it is. No one uses Sonos. It sucks
@@nesq4104 I'm guessing they upgraded from Bose. Pretend audiophile
Power amplifiers have huge reservoir capacitors in the PSU to give transient power reservoir.
Snake oil!
Fair enough! But before calling it ‘snake oil,’ give Garth a chance to explain the science, he might surprise you 😉
@@Architechne Nope, he still is a snake oil salesman
@@Architechne yeah I listened carefully , and there is nothing of science on it , just shameless egoistic greed
@@greggb681 Got it, but there’s nothing specific cited here - if there’s something in particular you disagree with, we’d love to hear it! Healthy debate is always welcome when it’s constructive.
@@greggb681 Have you tried it?
Holy shit, does your amplifiers run of DC or not. This is a lot of crap, maybe go back to school and learn power supply design. If you were in power for 25 years you have not learned much. You must have a very mediocre system if you have these problems. Goodness what a load of rubbish.
Nice! (Josh)
Thank you! 👍
great video, very informative . Yall keep up the good work !
Nice Tom...you can play!
In this episode, when Jeff refers to a 65 inch TV and Menards soundbar. He’s referring to me. Thankfully, I’ve since upgraded to a 3.1 channel Samsung soundbar.. we’re really living now! 😂
Looks like you've officially graduated from 'budget cinema' to 'next-level sound'! We're glad to see you're living large now with that 3.1 channel Samsung! Jeff might need to come over for a demo-he's been known to reconsider his opinions when there's popcorn involved. 🍿😂
I watched this for a comparison of sony tvs, not burgers But seeing they did pick culavers, which i had in fla is hands down the best, I decided to finish the video. Not much info excpet they like the 9 I just got the 7 n not reallying feeling it coming from samsung so i was thinking of the 8, but this didnt help.
Which sony tv uses Ads pro panel?
What a load of crap...all the bs with bloody burgers, stupid
This was an Awesome Podcast!
Thanks! @tommybolton463
Best TV.. Pioneer Kuro "drops mic"
That hot take on OLED going down did not last long😂 The 2024 shootout best of tv contest yesterday ranked the A95L first and the Samsung S95D very close second. But all judges said the same on mini-led its not even close to OLED. LCD cant fix blooming and bad viewing angels. But OLED is fixing higher brightness with mla and QD-OLED. So the gap of OLED being better is only increasing.
The big question I have is, can I use the neckband speaker along with the existing Sony speakers on the TV? So, my wife can listen to it quietly, but I can crank it up louder on my shoulders? Or does the connection turn off the Sony TV speakers? And if it does keep the Sony TV speakers on, will the sound be sinked with the neckband speaker? In otherwards all the speakers both on the TV and the neckband work together?
