Ranking EVERY Roger Dean Album Cover!

Roger Dean is probably the greatest non-musician to influence progressive-rock. Through decades upon ongoing decades of dedicated work, he has supplied many of the genre's best known (and a lot of obscure) albums with mesmerizing paintings that cemented the visual beauty of prog for eternity. I was so moved by Dean's work that I decided to go on a journey of discovery and uncover all of the alb...

your videos are really lovely 🙏🙏🙏 a few artists and albums i dont hear mentioned much anywhere else got reviewed by you which is great even if i am more in love with this album than you aha i love me some synth prog but i feel like the sole usage of acoustic instruments is actually an upside of the album and doesnt get boring your iceberg video is lovely as well and i wish you the best and hope you continue to do cool things in the future P.S. listen to samla mammas manna, preferably their entire discography, but their first 3 albums are where they peak 😉
Thank you very much, and will do!
One thing to take note, I think the entry for L. Ron Hubbard's fusion album refers to Power of Source by Apollo Stars, which was recorded by L. Ron and the titular group on his boat in 1974 while he was dodging the law. The album itself is decent enough, all of the members had jazz experience, but it sounds like trash because L. Ron insisted on producing despite having no clue how to do so. That being said, scientology does have some presence in fusion history, as before its infiltration into Hollywood many of its early celebrity adherents were musicians, especially Chick Corea, whose (otherwise very good) album The Romantic Warrior is dedicated to Hubbard.
@@SynGirl32 Oh wow! I will look into that other album, perhaps I got it wrong. Space Jazz (despite its name) does not quite sound "fusion" to me, so that might be the source of the distinction. And add for The Romantic Warrior being dedicated to Hubbard - that just feels WEIRD... Gonna look into that as well ;))
that’s it, music in general, specifically an album doesn’t necessarily have to bring much novelty, nor having to differ widely from the previous to provide a pleasant, enjoyable, and even interesting listen, listening experience, which appears to be the case. a mix of tuneful, accessible, « mainstream » (very relative) music and distinctive unprecedented eclecticism, virtuosity, complexity, multi-part vocal harmonies, rhythmic shifts. snazzy blend of musical consistency, playful music, musical likeableness and integrity, artistic, musical freedom, originality, creativity. revolutionizing popular music field. incredibly good music and as catchy as eclectic. music, musicality, musicianship, music writing song writing, rendition, melodies, harmonies, vocal harmonies, this album is perfect in all respects, a masterpiece
@@jeremy-et1mk So many descriptors! I guess it is deserving of them, however. I really do find it a shame how little I come back to this album...
« his last voyage » is one of the finest, most sumptuous songs musics, like the most poetic classical music, the most subtle version of zappa’s playfulness jazz, marc ribot’s finest electric effects
@@jeremy-et1mk I am LITERALLY listening to it right now and I was awed by its beauty. You have a good reason to put this album to such high regard and I thank you for reminding me to revisit it! ;D
You did the right decision leaving out the last side! The album is very much a three sided album and the reason for that is that jukka, jim and pekka all were given their own sides 1st side is jukka's 2nd is pekkas and the third one is jim's and the live jam is really just filler and has even been cut in some later releases. But i'm a huge wigwam fan and recently finished my wigwam vinyl collection and I would love to see reviews of all the wigwam albums because even in finland they have kind of faded into obscurity.
I have listened to saimaa from the very beginning like before they were even in spotify and i've seen saimaa live three times and this album is one of my favourites ever and was so happy to see it getting some international recognition.
@@tuntematonohikulkija2843 Love to see some love for Saimaa! I do not know if you were referring to this Beardfish review or to my Saimaa review (another video) haha!

This album is way beyond its time! A masterpiece.
27:22 Why some people think Robert fired Greg: he wasn’t good enough Why Greg was actually fired: he was beating Robert Fripp to much at beer pong
This is canon.
This is an impossible task
I actually love the cover of Hold Your Fire by Patto! Exquisite corpse cover ftw
3:40 You could've put Coldplay's Coloratura.
I like Clouded
0:54 perfect transition, probably an accident, but still perfect
Definitely not an accident haha!
Hi Naomi, This is SOOOOO good! I do have a few points regarding your coverage of Mr. Fripp, though ... First, Elton John was apparently hired by E.G. Records, without Robert Fripp's knowledge or consent, to sing on In the Wake of Poseidon. As you point out, though, Fripp put a stop to this plan after hearing Elton's vocal work on Empty Sky. In addition to Fripp, Al Stewart apparently took guitar lessons from Fripp's original guitar teacher, Don Strike. Strike apparently taught both Andy Summers and Greg Lake along the way as well. Trey Gunn, who played in both Sunday All Over the World and King Crimson with Fripp, is an ex-Crafty Guitarist. IIRC, the members of KC's erstwhile opening act the California Guitar Trio are (at least in part) ex-Crafties too.
@@wmpuig Brilliant! Lovely pieces of insight that I did not stumble upon. I think I should add a "corrections/additions" section in the video description, as it seems that there are many tidbits of information that is being unearthed in this comment section haha! Again, thank you! <3

As someone who literally knew nothing about prog rock this video is actually good. This just makes me wanna to explore more music genres
@@juhtsuki Lovely! Enjoy your exploration!
5:00 ah yes accessible death metal, one of my favorite genders
Cardiacs are not RIO. Neither are Residents. But there are RIO / neo-RIO artists influences by either / both of these bands. So there is some connection.
HOLY COW. An incredible debut--- just put it on a second time! And I don't think the Traffic mention is without rationale--- Mr. Fantasy is a complimentary album in my opinion.
Some of my personal favorite prog rock songs not mentioned here - Radiohead - Paranoid Android (and Subterranean Homesick Alien) The Abbey Road Medley Coldplay - Viva la Vida (?) The Beatles - Happiness Is a Warm Gun David Bowie - Space Oddity King Crimson - I Talk to The Wind Radiohead - Videotape Miracle Musical - Dream Sweet in Sea Major The White Stripes - Ball and Biscuit Radiohead - The National Anthem Duster - Like a Movie Candy Claws - Two Airships / Exploder Falls Tame Impala - Let it Happen Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb Childish Gambino - Me and Your Mama Mitski - First Love / Late Spring Frank Zappa - Who Needs the Peace Corps Renaissance - Trip to The Fair And way too many more (this is taking too long)
You ever start listening to an album and INSTANTLY know you'll love it? I listened to your favourite bits, stopped watching the video right there, went to listen to the full thing and even while I was still listening to it for the first time I already knew it was among my favourite albums of all time. Very, very few albums have ever done that for me In particular, that segment you shared from The Deadly Dream of Freedom is also my favourite bit from the whole album. Second time I went through the album, I reached that bit and actually started laughing because of how much I loved it
That's terrific! While "Spartacus" is fantastic, I think that "Illusions on a Double Dimple" overtakes it, so if you don't know it yet, I would HIGHLY encourage you to check it out ;))
@@365DaysofProg will do!
takeaway from this video: OMG YOU WATCHED ONCE UPON A TIME?!
for a personal one that I really love, well firstly I'd have said one of the Simon Williams covers for Pendragon, but I already know your opinion on how busy those are (but I really love The Window of Life), so looking elsewhere, well a Roger Dean cover would be far too obvious, so looking some more... honestly Visitor 2035 (self-titled) and Concept by Canamii come to mind as really banger covers
This one really left me feeling cold--- there's nice moments on it, but they're so few and far between that I can't really say I enjoy it all that much. "Chinese Mushroom Cloud" really had some potential, and for some reason it kinda reminds me of the Alan Parsons Project's "Sirius"? Shame it's basically over as soon as it starts though. Also, Wise After the Event might have one of my fave Anthony Phillips album packaging, but I'm unsure how similar it is to TG&tG musically...
@@fenestrosaur Funny that you say that, because about three months ago, I came back to this album and I suddenly GOT it. I can't quite put my finger on it yet, but the experience of this one as a whole is magical beyond belief for me.
@@365DaysofProg guess I'll have to check back on February! But for now, I've gotta finish Wounded Land by Threshold...
9:05 recently that's something I noticed about my taste too. I've said in a previous comment that I have no issues with bands sounding like other bands; if you give me a cake and then an identical copy of that cake, I'll just get excited over having double the cake. However, if you're just gonna create your own version of the same song then I'll like it less, like with Grendel by Marillion: most of the song sounds decent to me, except that one part that just sounds like a discount Apocalypse in 9/8. That just sounded pointless to me edit: oh I forgot. You mentioned the singer didn't sound that much like Jon Anderson. If you haven't already, give their song Fountains, from the next album Fountains of Light, a listen. There's a specific part towards the end where he sings "the edges of the sky" that sounded so much like Jon Anderson that it makes me double-take each time
@@plazasta Will do!
second favourite rock album of all time for me (second only to Masquerade Overture, their previous album), plus A Man of Nomadic Traits is my single favourite song of all time, just because of how much I loved its solos (well, at that point it's basically an instrumental section) your video did remind me of a question I have though: what's wrong with getting more of the same? I see people complaining all the time that "x band just sounds like a clone of x other band" or that "this album sounds too similar to their previous work" and I genuinely don't get it. I don't understand how someone can think "Man I really loved how this album sounded! I hope no one ever makes anything like this ever again!" the impression I have right now is that I don't enjoy prog and neo-prog for the same reasons as others. I don't seek any ground-breaking music and never did. I just happen to really like the general sound, so I'm a lot easier to please (however this does means that there are sounds and songs that others will find mind-blowing that will do nothing for me)
@@plazasta I haven't come back to this review in a while, but I would iterate that I absolutely love bands that continuously manage to create similar sounding materials............as long as I like their sound in the first place. Pendragon is objectively good imo, but I haven't really been able to make a lasting connection with their music. But it's very nice to hear from their devoted fans (which I know there are many of)! Also, your profile pick just gave me the biggest nostalgia blast!
@@365DaysofProg omg a fellow Club Penguin enjoyer :O it's perfectly fine if you don't like them as much as others! I just got curious when you mentioned how others didn't like Not of this World cause it sounded too much like their previous material, cause that perplexed me a bit. The other thing you brought to mind is how recently it felt like a lot of prog bands I've listened to clearly drew influence from the likes of Yes or Genesis, but I'd rarely heard any band that drew influence from Pink Floyd, except now you made me notice that influence within Pendragon's sound. So like is it really that few smaller prog bands drew influence from Pink Floyd, or is it that I just hadn't noticed said influence until now?
@plazasta From my extensive introduction to many-a-prog bands, I will definitely say that only a few are directly inspired / tried to mimic the Pink Floyd sound. Early Porcupine Tree did that for a bit but quickly grew out of it, and there is an album called "Crying of the Whales" that is HIGHLY obscure, which tries way to hard to mimic PF. I actually reviewed that album on the channel haha!
One of my personal faves! Fave tracks are also "Dark Ages" and "Warm Sporran," plus the plodding "Orion."
@@fenestrosaur "Dark Ages" and "Orion" still make appearances in my playlists nowadays ;))
@@365DaysofProg I remember once finding a copy of Stormwatch at a local record store and urging the owner to put the needle down on "Orion"--- he was pretty impressed with it! Also dig the giant polar bear on the back, perhaps an allusion to "Something's on the Move"?

21:12 Changing the intro and outro every season is an industry standard in modern anime. Copyright becomes an issue when they have to distribute the shows outside Japan (which is why the Netflix versions of Ergo Proxy , Monster and Evangelion replaced Paranoid Android, David Sylvian's For The Love Of Life, and Fly Me To the Moon respectively with instrumental tracks)
30:00 the spitting incident happened during money and there is footage of it in the exact 8mm you used for this vid edit: you actually use the footage but still say the wrong song? 2nd edit: case resolved, thanks for being so nice and cooperative @365DaysofProg
@@LunaticCraft The footage I found had no sound. I found two sources stating that it happened during Pigs. Can you please supply your source for the song being Money?
@@365DaysofProg ua-cam.com/video/d5uYoyFLqZs/v-deo.html This video is synced up to a matrix of the concert. the guys behind the vid are specialized in recovering old pink floyd 8mm, you can trust them. they have their reasoning in the description, why it's most likely to be money. but I mean this is one tiny error in 2h 42mins. it's already a huge accomplishment to do something that big. and it's pretty well researched. I want to express my huge respect for your work
@@LunaticCraft I cannot believe that I haven't come across this specific upload in my research! (I got the video clips from a shady website which put a disturbingly large watermark on the whole video...) And yeah, this seems about right; it does look like Money is being played. The SuperTramp one is the dumbest conspiracy theory I’ve ever heard 😂
Good for people who know nothing about prog rock, but offers nothing new for those who know about it. BTW, it’s just Dark Side of the Moon. No “The “ at the beginning.
Just let Piero Scaruffi, the king of music critics, sit into Tier 1, for introducing a lot of people into Krautrock, Canterbury Scene, Space Rock / Drone Music / Early Electronic Music. Thanks to him i f***ed up my brain by listening to Irrlicht (Klaus Schulze solo debut album) about 100 times, trying to figure out what was happening there.
You mean the king of musical hot takes (e.g. The Beatles are awful and so on) and undechiprable ratings. But as a curator he's indeed number 1. I found so many artists through his writings on the history of rock, the history of jazz and the history of popular music.
@shacharh5470 if you read carefully that particular article, you notice that he gives credit to Beatles iconic albums (Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road, White Album), but he simply believes that other bands were evolving rock music more deeply (early Pink Floyd, Velvet UG, Jimi Hendrix...). I love critics that use low grades and high grades, because they really try to choose the best in their opinion. Scaruffi gives mediocre rates to a lot of bands I love (Genesis, Queen, Iron Maiden, Rush...)
@@danielecardinali7349 The Beatles are an example. He wrote scathing reviews of many well loved and respected artists. David Bowie for example if I remember right.
@@shacharh5470 He respected Bowie as a showman and performer, but stated that the album he released did not make justice to his genius. However, he highly respected his best albums (Ziggy Stardust, Low, Heroes, Station to Station...)
@@danielecardinali7349 What about his Cardiacs reviews? He hated the masterpiece "Everso Closely Guarded Line" and his review of Guns is so negative you'd think there was nothing worthwhile about it (sure it's not as good as previous albums but it's got lots of great songs on it! To say nonchalantly that Tim Smith had lost his juice, or whatever phrasing he used.. that's so dismissive). I mean, Scaruffi has the right to his opinions but he seems to express them sometimes without any subtlety
