    Hi. Came across your channel precisely as I was looking into the Digitone Keys. Got a fair bit of Gear - I'm mostly a Roland guy - but I'd say "different horses for different courses". I'm sorta composing songs of different genres. I also play in a Soul/Funk Band. I like the heavyness of a good ol' 88 piano keyboard. My main problem is that I cannot sell as time and technology are running by. Got a Fantom-G88 whose sound is a bit dated but feels great playing - I even added an upper 73 master keyboard to play its 8 tracks on both. Have a Roland Gaia, an Integra-7 expander and a A-800pro master keyboard to play it. That was my former live Set playing Pop-Rock but it was too cumbersome to carry along (most of all this is second hand btw). So I bought a Modx+7 and REPURPOSED the A-800pro for an upper hand in a simpler 2-keyboard setup. Now I've been fidling along with an MC-707 and Tr-6s and I'd like to go performing Live. Elektron sequencers look quite cool and powerful and I see myself actually playing 🎹 not just DJing or 🎮 controlling.. I stumbled across this guy along the way : ua-cam.com/play/PLqd_8Ec74Xeojrj1u1V197-74vYv5Rh1e.html&si=Fwd3TBxpLkGYS2sa and I think he has a very interesting 2-machine configuration where he's routing all the audio into the MC-707 using it as a live mixer/panning and FX processor alongside its own ZenCore sound engine (each machine providing 4 audio tracks), while the Digitone is handling alll the MIDI, either through its internal/external sequencer or the keyboard. I initially disliked the Idea of NOT using the 8-operator MODX+ to fall back on the 4-operator Elektron, and ditching the TR-6s for a lack of audio inputs (4 max on the Mc-707, all from the Digitone), but as I said, with Live performance in Mind, the less, the better. Plus, the Zen-core VA engine does quit convincing analog-ish (Roland/Moogy/Prophety) sound - Especially through PA speakers - handles sample as full drumkits with better microtiming that the tr-Xs but has NO operator-based FM synthesis ...So one more machine ?

    • @nedogled
      @nedogled 10 днів тому

      Wow Digitone Keys + MC-707 does sound like the perfect live combo! It's true that the Digitone has less operators, but it's more than just an FM synth. And whatever it lacks, Zen core will surely make up for in a live setting. You've got me thinking about a live setup now :)

    Nice concise summary of the dis/advantages. Didn't realize it was a trend, but having used the Zoom L-8 for 3-4 years, I feel like the way it enables a computer-less, hands-on recording experience keeps things feeling musical and inspired. Then mixing and editing in a DAW afterwards gives all the power and flexibility I could ever want. The computer stays in one room (work), the music instruments in another (play). It's a distinction that makes my brain happy.

    • @nedogled
      @nedogled 13 днів тому

      It's really helped me with decision fatigue, as you mentioned. Having limited options is the best support for creativity. I'm also recording hardware via the Model 12, but I struggle with arranging in Ableton afterwards. It definitely feels like a barrier to creativity.

    • @nedogled
      @nedogled 17 днів тому

      Exactly! I haven't used Ableton, but there might be other DAWs that have a more streamlined approach for simply arranging and mixing multitracks. I'm very happy with Mixbus, but a lot of people say good things about Reaper.

  • @chrl_nrys

    My track 1 key is the only one that exhibits the same problem as some of yours. Pressing it once seems to always open the sound selection menu. I adore the digitone keys but I must admit I am considering parting with it as it’s lack of song position pointer support like the OT and analogs have is a real pain to use for writing. Having to play an entire pattern through to hear one or two changes you made on like page 4 is the worst part of the elektron workflow and they need to adopt the new RYTM/DT2 page loop functionality across the board asap

    • @nedogled
      @nedogled 21 день тому

      That's a very good point and a pain in the ass for me as well. In that case, I'll usually copy just the last page to another pattern as I'm making changes and once I'm happy, I'll bring it back to the 4-page pattern. But I can see how another workflow would make that much easier....

    So, when recording with this can you save sessions and go back to them later to add more or edit?

    • @nedogled
      @nedogled 22 дні тому

      Yes, you've got the multiracks recorded to an SD card and you can either record over some or all of the tracks, and you can even set 'punch in' points, or simply record after the initial recording and keep adding to that at the end.

    I must have notebooks to write lyrics down, jot notes down on what things I’ve done to tracks, etc etc. Pen and paper will never stop being perfectly modern and futuristic. It’s too practical.

    The only thing that keeps me using a DAW (Reaper, the only DAW with a sensible setup) are the great plugins you can use, and the capabilities they have. But aesthetically, I very much prefer good multitracks, such as the Boss BR-1600 I have. I began with a Teac 4-track cassette in 1981, and having a way to lay multiple tracks seemed really wild then. It caused a lot of good times.

      That's true, there are a lot of great plugins in DAWs, but the temptation to buy new ones was always breathing down my neck when I was a full time DAW user :) I haven't heard of the Boss BR-1600 before, thanks for bringing that to my attention! I'll actually be publishing the video about my mixer/recorder tomorrow, so stay tuned for that one. It's a continuation of what the mighty Teac started all those decades ago!

      I had a BR 1600 for a little while and had to sell it. Can you use it as a DAW controller at all? I know it's getting on a bit but I really like it. Otherwise I'll have to go for the Tascam model he uses in this video (I started off on a Tascam tape 4 track. So much fun)... thanks.

      @@titmusspaultpaul5 Whenever I try to get into the deeper features with a DAW, it gets convoluted and confusing, and if I think I’m in the mode to do what I want to attempt, then I engage it, either nothing happens at all, or very strange things happen which destroys my project. I think it likely that via some sort of MIDI setup, what you described could be done, but I really don’t know, I’m afraid. Sorry I couldn’t help you. If you googled about, there’s every kind of instructional things out there, just a more obscure thing such as that may take some effort in order to happen upon. Maybe state it directly “Will a Boss BR-1600 work as a controller within a DAW”, and there will be something.

    Just read an amazing article in Le Monde (the scoop was actually from a Scandinavian newspaper but don't recall which) that said that single artists were using dozens of pseudonyms and making a killing by appearing under the various pseudonyms in the same new age/relax ambient playlists. Inane versions of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star that my cat could probably play were being streamed millions of time. And the fake artists were being included on these playlists as if they were different artists. They were earning the big bucks while real artists pursuing an actual artistic vision were earning these ridiculous royalties. Spotify is truly ripping off the world and destroying music. They also boost very dodgy podcast content. In terms of music appreciation, their algorithms are making sure that people's tastes are becoming continually less sophisticated or diverse. It's the musical version of television's Lowest Common Denominator/dumbing down programming, which also made killings for the producers, like the Discovery Channel with its sensationalist content-thin documentaries or the trash talk shows and reality shows that basically show people how to hate each other. What a great time to be alive - not.

      You are correct on so many points! Mainstream culture does indeed look bleak and depressing to anyone seeking any amount of depth. However, once you start digging around on the fringes, you’re bound to come across some very original music. It does require some effort, but to me that’s part of the fun. Also, carrying out your artistic vision has never been more accessible... I mean, just look at the gear you and I have access to 🤤 Yeah, we’re never going to ‘make it’ in terms of living off our music, but we won’t have to bend our will to the algorithm either. If my music resonates with 10 people, that’s good enough for me!
