No he’s an underrated striker and a pretty meh defender
He was an excellent defender but because he was so good on the ball, he had a tendency to do too much and thus, get caught out of position. He could have easily played as a classy ball playing defensive midfielder. Not many center backs ever as good as him on the ball. In his last year at Roma, I guess he knew he was going, he was fully focused and played like a man possessed hoping to win something before he went. He was a magnet to every ball coming into the box for 6 months and then he blew his knee out. Never forget it, he left the pitch crying, probably knowing that was it all over. I was at Milan Roma a couple of seasons later when Totti got sent off for elbowing him in the face. He was a Roma boy but nobody follows him and he follows nobody connected to Roma on instagram. A shame how they fell out so bad.

For me Sergio Busquets is top player, strategically perfect, but defenders almost never receive this award, and I don´t know why. This is all about politics and marketing. If this was serious, we'll use statistics logically to see who has actually done the most to lead their team to success. Surely we would be surprised to see that many times the best are many who are now forgotten.

to be honest, look at the amount of space he has. the defenders weren't as good as they are today both in skills and tactics. he was a visionary of his time, but i'm not sure he'd be ballon d'or material in this age, with messi and ronaldo playing
Since the internet emerged, every generation has the benefit learning from previous generations. It's hard to compare from different eras. But in my opinion, Maradona is the best.
