Wild Man In The Forest, after Lee Hammons(1883-1980), Pocahontas County, West Virginia
Dwight Diller taught me to play the fiddle, and he held Lee Hammons's fiddling in the highest regard, above all others. Thankfully, Dwight recorded Lee fiddling and playing banjo in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Lee was almost 90 years old. This is my attempt at playing Lee's version of Wild Man In The Forest.

I learned this from a recording of Lee Hammons playing, with guidance from my dear friend and mentor Dwight Diller, both of Pocahontas County, West Virginia. #LeeHammons #DwightDiller #Diller #Fiddle #OldTime #Appalachian #WestVirginia #Virginia #Kentucky #Tennessee #NorthCarolina #CrossTuning

This is my Scottish wife's favourite tune, so I took a crack at it. I wasn't able to shed my Appalachian / West Virginia accent.

I originally learned this tune as a banjo tune from my dear friend and mentor Dwight Diller of Pocohontas County, West Virginia. My great great grandfather, John Hooks Lendrum, was present on the occasion of the historical event memorialized by this tune. Henry Reed (b. 1884 in Monroe County, West Virginia) learned the tune ‘Santa Anna’s Retreat’ from Quince Dillon, who was a fifer in the Mexic...

I learned this tune (and the associated song) from my dear departed teacher, mentor, friend, and Christian brother Dwight Diller of Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The song itself is about losing someone you love, and losing them in the worst possible way (the beloved Angeline, an enslaved woman, is sold off to a new master, away from her lover, also enslaved, who is singing the song). Dwight...

A fine tune with a very interesting history! Thanks for sharing it.
Love me some Bella White ❤️
Bella is the shit. She is going to make a ton of awesome stuff for decades to come.
Glad to see a younger artist sing a Bill Anderson
Amazing!
BELLA ❤❤
Sounds great! Transplanted Albertan👍🇨🇦
Bella sang at our Hollywood Theatre tonight. Amazing show. Kindly autographed a Photo I made. She has a lovely personality. Happy trails, Bella.
Sweet Jesus there's so few people? I would have sacrificed a limb to be here. No one on earth sings like Bella, NO ONE
Wow she's great! And Connie Smith's song Once a Day was beautifully done!
That’s a jam!
Love this, bravo!
It is a great album, and I think this cover is as good of a version of this song that I’ve ever heard.
the new album is stellar and on heavy repeat in my house
Its one of the things I listen to the most at work. Nick Shoulders is also played constantly, another rad and unique voice.
So happy for her
this one also.. there is something extraordinary in hearing a tune come through from the past without it essentially being changed in character, without modernisation, without needing to add to it or take away from it, just letting it be..
strong, authentic, old sound
Thank you, Catherine. That is a great compliment, coming from you. I believe my playing has continued to improve substantially since I recorded this. I hope you're well! My wife and I are in Scotland as I write this, visiting family, and coincidentally visiting the Culloden Battlefield tomorrow, which I'm told has a connection to this tune!
Badass song! You're really good!
Maybe 'was' really good! That's getting to be a long time ago now!
Great as always.
Thanks. Thank made more sense to me than just the notation from the playing of Emory Bailey or the field recording. It's the rhythm I was searching for.
So weird, right at the same time you were posting this, I was finishing up a run along the Bow River and did something I don't usually do, which was climb down to a boulder right at the river's edge and sit there in the sun soaking up the whole energy of the river. Glad you like the song...have you heard the CD version? The whole CD, Will White - Rise Above, is on iTunes. Give me your address and I'll send you the CD. Will
it says last time i posted was 3 years ago wow time flys eh?
hey willy still got you in my favorite file I come back to this video from time to time and play it a few times. Great job on this man
Very heart felt version .. Just great . All the best , Guy
That's a great version! I'm trying to work this one out now. This helps a lot. Thanks for posting
Still trying to learn tfhat clawhammer technique :-(
love this version of Abe's Retreat... can you get the sheet music for it?
@ittycar Thanks for your kind comments!
Thanks! It's also on my CD that I put out in 2010. checkout willwhitemusic[dot]com

Did you write this?? If so good job, if not still a good job of singing and playing!!!
hey just back to say I still listen to you thanks for keeping it on. My mother gave me her yamaha also when she found out she was dying and told me to learn to play it she passed in 1980
Sir in my opnion your field of endevor should be songs of war. All of your songs come up through the minor cords.. A device desined to communicate horror, rage and a desire for action.....
I'd agree, because this song is awesome
Very nice.... good old song, too!
Hi newfielad47, sorry I didn't reply sooner. The guitar is an old Yamaha, one of the few things my ex-wife let me keep when we split up in the early 90s! Sounds pretty good for a $200 guitar! A few months after I recorded this video though I got my Collings which is my main guitar now, and on all my most recent videos. Can't remember what kind of strings I had on the Yamaha when I recorded this one. No, I don't play for a living, thank God, 'cause I like to eat!
Hey will where are you from what kind of guitar and strings. Im from ont canada. I work as a psw in old age home. What sort of work do you do. Just curios as to weather you play for aliving etc . Again enjoyed your performance take care man
The song is played out of the Am position. I think when I recorded this I had it capo'd at the 5th fret, which puts the song in Dm. Sometimes I also capo up to the 7th fret (Em). Guitar is in standard tuning. Thanks for the comment!
watch 4:02 his facial expression changes as if he's sinking deeper in the song . Great playing great voice. Ive watched this about a dozen times I love it. Im trying to figure the fret of the capo 5-6 and are you tuned down or up thanks
wow!!! 2 thumbs up
Great as always.
yup.
Is this all the same set?
Ya gotta love it.
Great one again fellas! I'd love to jam sometime! haha
Another nice song.
Great song, great performance.
Great! Soothing!
You in Calgary? haha cool. Just moved here.. Check out my music! You have a great voice!
Nice!
