I saddle up and climb over Oregon's famed McKenzie Pass. A loaded bike, steep climbs and road delays make for a challenging day of riding, but well worth the effort.

Tubeless Tires for Bicycle Touring? Installing Schwalbe Almotion Tires.
Переглядів 2,8 тис.Рік тому
In an effort to improve comfort and performance, I install tubeless tires on my touring bike. However, I have questions. Are these tires suited for touring? Would they be dependable on rides through remote areas? I try to determine if they are up for the task. Update: The tight clearance with the Almotions caused some issues on my latest tour. I’ll be sharing details soon.

Ortlieb vs Arkel - Small Handlebar Bag Comparison
That's me in the tractor at 18:46.
Wow! That’s crazy and an impressive tractor too. 👍
This is my favorite episode so far - love the terrain and scenery. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Do you, by any chance, have gps tracks of your routes - ridewithgps or strava, other?? I really want to ride a similar route but can't find other routes to reference. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment! This route in this video is part of Section 2 of the Adventure Cycling Associations "Sierra Cascades" route. I rode the section from Hood River to Santiam Junction www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1TyGuPeHinr708hJxueVpijIQczobIukE&usp=sharing
Great video! Can't wait to do some long-term bike travels like this. On the negativity side, I'm seeing/hearing about campsites that are becoming makeshift homeless shelters. Sad and dangerous.
Thanks for watching! I hope you get out and do some bike travel. It’s a great way to explore the world.
What's that constant whistling sound off your bike?
It’s probably my annoyingly loud free hub. Bike came with Industry 9 hubs, that I am not very fond off TBH.
Great video 👍
Thanks!
Backyard bike camping! I'm back in Sunnyvale let's do an overnighter soon!
Yup, nice to have some route options right out the back door.
Been running tubeless for the last 6mths and up till 3 weeks ago i was happy enough but didn't think tubeless was all that and then on a long ride 45km from home on a mountain pass and i get 2 punctures within 20 meters of each other in the front wheel just a couple of thorns i pulled them out the sealant did its jobs and i carried on like nothing had happened point of my story tubeless rocks and can save you from a nightmare on the trails
I commented on your video when you first switched to the tubeless almotions. Yeah, that's a bummer they won't fit on your new bike. Even tubed Schwalbes are better than anything else, in my opinion.
I really liked the Almotions and rolled the dice with the tight chain stay clearance. A wet ride with mud accumulation during a tour last Spring deemed them too wide for my setup. ☹️
Congrats on your Park Pass, they're a good deal. ....Not Older, but better, my friend
Thanks Mark, sometimes it’s good to be old!
Oeps! I just watched your "gear checkup" video. That answered most of my questions. The bike that I am building is supposed to enable 60-622 .... probably wait until the frame arrives. Perhaps use 27.5" wheels; which the all motions don't support ;-( . I have made a 1200 km tour with my gravel bike with 50-622 G-one overland. had 1 flat. Actually that was the first in 3 years)
Yeah I liked the Almotions, smooth ride and good traction, but were a little too wide for my frame. Thanks for watching and your comments!
Thank you for your nice video's. How are the tubeless Almotions doing? How were they doing in muddier conditions? Was their enough clearance between the tires and the frame/mudguards?
What type of camp chair are you using ?
It is a Helinox chair, only weighs 1 lb. 👍
I like your videos. Thanks for putting them together for us.
Thank you for watching and the nice comment! 👍
Congratulations on your climb!!!🎉 The water at Clearwater looks pretty clear, but I have to ask, is it drinkable? If so, did you fill your water bottles up before heading out? I enjoy your videos my friend, keep em coming! You take care!
I had some bottled water I purchased at Diamond Lake and did not need to drink the water at Clearwater Falls, but if needed I would have run it through my Sawyer filter before drinking. Clear water yes, but you never know what lurks in the micro world. Thanks again for watching and the kind words!
Was crater lake dog friendly?
Dogs are allowed in Crater Lake National Park, but are not allowed on trails or wilderness areas. 🐕
@TheOutsidePerks right on. Thank you 👍 going for the first time in 2 weeks with our pup. Seeing if it's worth it or not
I've got the packer plus. Waterproof and much more practical than rolling all the time.
Be careful after Mt. Bachelor. Once in O'Dell Oregon it can be a little tight riding. Beautiful area but be careful. Lots of camping and beautiful. Did the ride from bend to hardesty mountain.
Your bag and bike color coordination is a nice touch!
Thanks!
Superb video. Straight, to the point, informative, no wasted time, no annoying background music. Ortlieb should hire you to make their product videos. Theirs are terrible.
Good video. Beautiful place!
I just bought the classic black. I like the pockets on the bike packers tho. I’ll use these for a while and see. I don’t think you need to roll the rollers and then clip them, tho. You can use the shoulder strap and just lock them down, right? As I understand the fastener aren’t meant to be clipped together like a dry bag…or am I wrong?
Yep, good video of some very beautiful country. For an ol' guy you can still ride like those younger guys😂😅😊. Keep on trekking.
I love Oregon. About dehydrated food, test it before you have to use it when camping ;) I love your video's, just wish they where longer.
What a beautiful part of the world thanks for sharing
You’re welcome, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Yo Graham! Michael here, ive ridden Mckenzie pass in the spring when its only open to bikes, so fun! Im in Sunnyvale at my mother in laws for a few weeks, rolling out on a mini tour tomorrow! Hit me up on IG message!
Have fun on your SF to SC tour. Let's try connect next week. I'm OOT Sun-Wed backpacking, but I'll reach out and see where you're at when I return.
how heavy is your loaded touring bike?
Bike is 35lbs + 30lbs of gear
Nothing better than a new smooth asphalt road! Great video my friend! Beautiful territory to be traveling through for sure!
Thank you, hope you’re getting in some adventures this summer.
Looks a great ride. Any bears?
I have ridden up that pass several times. Never saw any bears.
@@alethearobinson8132 This is good to know.
Only Mosquitoes!
Do you use a bike lock? Good ones seem to be SO heavy! I have one of those Kryptonite heavy chains covered with red cloth.
I have a basic lock and cable but it is not very robust so its relatively light. Good for peace of mind for a quick dash into a store, or sleeping in a campground, but not very thief proof. Thank you for your previous comments too, much appreciated!
I really have been enjoying all your videos. Regarding the drunk driver, she just this past May 2024 (almost two years after the event) was found guilty, and won't be sentenced until August.
Thanks for the update on that Elizabeth. It gave me chills just standing where the crash happened. Hopefully a very long jail sentence is coming her way.

Things like Spokes, head-set, handlebar tape . Luggage or bag attachment points.
Much appreciated. Well done.
Thanks!
I am trying to decide between these two bags right now and am having a hard time making a choice. Appreciate the information you provided.
Glad it was helpful!
Loved this series. Its' so funny you started and ended a very few miles from Cox Creek Rd. where I lived for 6 months in 2017. I got homesick and went back to Arizona, but have visited Oregon and done a lot of day biking 3 times since then, including the Row River Trail, and the trails along the Willamette and into Springfield. I would sure like to find time to go back and do a real tour! (I wouldn't be a bit surprised if your friend Ron knew my landlord on Cox Creek, who has since passed away. He was an old hippie, lived there many years.)
Makes me homesick, although I lived there only a short time! What month was this? Looks like late June. Thanks for the interesting videos. I've watched the coastal one, will check out the others, too. Thanks from Arizona.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. This ride was in early June and, except for mosquitoes, was an ideal time of year for this route.
@@TheOutsidePerks I commented on the last one as well. There's a minor coincidence regarding your start/end location.
I like how high it sits in the front wear can I buy a bike like this
It’s a custom frame for my tall body. co-motion.com/collections/bikes/products/americano
Great gear video and bike! What tripod do you carry? I’ve yet to find the perfect lightweight tripod for my travels.
I've been using a Sirui "Travel" tripod. It's close to 2 lbs, so not exactly light but sets up quick and easy, is fairly tall, and good quality. Anything lighter seems to get stupid expensive.
@@TheOutsidePerks Thanks for that info!
Guessing your tools, spare parts and such are in the frame bag?
@@pedalingpete626 Yes, good guess. Basic tools and a spare tube are in Frame Pack. Plus a spare Gates Belt is in a rear pannier exterior pocket, just in case.
Enjoyed the vid, sorry we could never work out meeting up, ill be down in a few weeks to visit mother in law
I’m in and out of town the next few weeks, but hit me up on IG when you’re down
@TheOutsidePerks will do, i need to do a bay area taco tour!
Wonderful info.
Thanks for watching!
Glad to see your air mattress doesn't leak 😉. Good tip on the ,meat cooking too. Travel Safe!
Yup, Nemo replaced my leaky pad 2x but it has proven to be fragile. BA pad is a bit heavier but so far is more durable, and quite comfy. Thanks Joe!
@@TheOutsidePerks Thermarest has replaced two of my pads. One of them 3 times! Rather have one that is more durable, though, but then I'd have to actually BUY one!
Don't see your shifter for your pinion on your drop bar
The Pinion shifter is on the drop bar. www.cxmagazine.com/2016-nahbs-highlights-comotion-low-alliance-challenge-tires-reeb/the-co-motion-divide-pinion-includes-a-twist-shifter-that-cycles-through-all-18-pinion-gears-with-no-overlap-between-the-gears-and-a-686-difference-between-the-low-and-high-a-mountain-bike-triple
@TheOutsidePerks didn't realize that the shifter worked on drop bars...I've only seen then on flat or alt bars...similar to the rholoff shifter. I do love the idea of the pinion gearbox but there's so few bike brands that are making frames for them. I've looked at the priority 600x bikes that Ryan Van Duzer rides...he was doing the TD but dropped out after 600miles due to severe saddle sores. It was rainy and cold at the start and he was never able to keep his bottom dry during the race.
@@stevemullin1195 Was sad for Ryan that he had to drop. I was just nodding my head watching his video. I think I'm a similar kind of rider - up for a personal challenge, not into racing. The standard grip shifter for Pinion with flat bars is made in an Ergon factory. When drop bars are spec'd on Co-Motion bikes, Co-Motion has a custom shifter made out of metal. Less a grip shifter and more a rotary dial imo. Kudos to Co-Motion on this - maybe Graham can get close-up video and comment on it in a future video. Not sure if they make it in house or have somebody do it for them. I'm really not a drop bar guy, I enjoy the Jones H-bar on my Co-Motion Divide with Pinion. But that Ergon grip shifter is the only option on flat bars for Pinion, and it needs a serious re-engineering. It has made me think twice about switching to drop bars. Very unhappy with it. Clearly the cheapest, poorly functioning component on the bike. Cannot shift with any sweat on my fingers, gloves are absolutely required. Probably won't be changed by Pinion, as they appear to be moving toward electronic shifting. Thought I'd put some of these reactions down in case anyone else considering the flat bar Pinion.
The Ortlieb mounting system is cumbersome if you need to regularly remove your handlebars. For example when boxing the bike for plane travel the mount has to be removed so that the handlebars can be taken off and prepared for boxing. The cables begin to fray after repeated mounting and unmounting requiring a cable cutter to tidy up the end so it can be rethreaded. The mounting procedure is awkward, particularly if having to mount or unmount in challenging circumstances. Otherwise I have been very happy with my Ortlieb for those reasons identified in the video.
What resource did you use to learn about the road closure?
Some other cyclists brought it to my attention when I was further north, then I checked the Caltrans web page and it had details on the closure schedule
Hey, I’m 62. My son is 27. We are flatlanders from Maryland. We are flying out to Portland with gravel bikes. He is pulling a.Burley I plan to take the Columbia River historic Trail from Portland to Hood River. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how to use the Sierra Cascade Trail to get down to the Transamerica around Prineville. I hear that N45 is still closed. I was thinking of taking 35 south but then don’t know where to go from there particularly since folks suggest trying to avoid 26 south any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Robert, The Sierra Cascades route intersects with the TransAm route at Santiam Junction east of Eugene. The section from Hood River south to Santiam Jct is a very scenic stretch. Conversely, following the SC route up 35 to Gov't Camp then taking 26 south all the way to Prinville would be shorter with less climbing than the SC route. I rode a short section of 26 from Gov C to NF-42 intersect (per SC route). It was on a Saturday and it had a lot of traffic. Also 26 leads to ok high desert scenery (I've driven parts) vs nice forests and camping on the SC Route to Santiam Jct. No closures on any of the Forest Roads on the SC route. NF46 through the burn area was open. If you're going the distance on the TransAm you may wish to take Highway 26 to shave some miles / effort, and probably mid week would be less traffic on 26. Enjoy your journey with you Son!
Thanks for commenting on the new bike paths. Those bike paths were quite conentuous on Modoc. I have ridden my bicycle on Modoc numerous times onto Hollister as you rode. The bike path made a difference in feeling that you were going to get run over by a car. It is also nice that they now go down Las Positas to the ocean. Enjoy your stay in Santa Barbara. Glad you were able to ride on one of the very few remaining undeveloped piece of coastal land in the US.
I’m pretty sure that I saw you last Friday riding down Homestead around lunch time.
Good chance it was. I ride that area frequently. I’m the slow guy getting passed by roadies lol.
"Could be worse!" Spoken so many times by cyclists through the ages! I've ridden this same route many times, but never in the rain. Kudos to you for persevering.
In 2012 I rode from Los Angeles to Jalama Beach County Park and back, we camped, sweet memory.
I love it. Dude, you got me missing CA in a big way. I gotta binge watch the rest of this trip. Thanks for sharing your adventure. (Instant new subscriber! 😊)
