Steelers-Bengals: Will Joe Burrow carve up defense like Jameis Winston did if they're not careful?
On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey ponders the Steelers' NFL Week 13 matchup with Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and the AFC North rival Bengals this week in Cincinnati. Can coach Mike Tomlin, DC Teryl Austin and players including safety Minkah Fitzpatrick fix pass defense issues that crept up in the Week 12 loss to Jameis Winston and the Cleveland Browns? And how will the Justin Fields package be deployed at QB, particularly in big moments late in the game? Will he be given the chance to throw again? Or will OC Arthur Smith save those opportunities for Russell Wilson?
Later, Jason ponders a report about Russell Wilson's future in Pittsburgh and reacts to the Pirates' moves to non-tender players including Connor Joe and Bryan De La Cruz.

Mike handed the keys to Arthur and the only thing he told him was no turnovers.so smith has been ultra conservative.so mikes gotta let him open this up a little.but think the defense rebounds this week but think we still loose in a close one .

No. Against a Top 10 QB not naned Lamar Jackson the Secondary will get exposed. Burrow will have at least 3 TD's. Steelers 'O' will need to step it up. They'll probably need 28 to 34 points to win.

Yep. Fields threw a great ball. Pickens gave up on the play because he was facing adversity from the defense and perhaps some no-calls. You still have to fight. If you're that much better than the defender, then you should be able to win the rep.

Yes, there's a very high probability that Joe Burrow will slice and dice this so-called "elite" defense. With genius defensive coordinator Teryl Austin consistently attacking with only 4, we've seen how this has turned out - giving the QB all the time in the world to make plays and burn the D.

No. They want Sid to pass the torch but send anyone he can pass the torch to down to the AHL. This group of skaters, they are not a team, is the over the hill gang. The two young forwards they do have up are stuck on the bottom lines. Let Sid play with the kids. Let Geno play with the kids. Let the old guys play on the bottom two lines. Let Blomqvist start with Ned backing him. trade, cut, buy out, wave, do anything to get rid of Jarry. Letang needs to go to. He's a turnover machine.

Im starting to wonder if were underestimating the losses of James Daniels and Troy Fautanu... thats 2/5, 40%, of ur planned offensive line. And 2 of the 5 current starters are rookies. 1 is a work in progress in jones, 1 is old seumalu, the other is, sighs, Dan Moore... its not exactly ideal.

Long story short..... Steelers beat the ravens, but the Ravens really put a hurt on the Steelers physically. They needed a few more days to recover. Didn't get it because it's a Thursday game....... meanwhile the Cleveland Browns treat every time the Steelers come to Cleveland as if it's the super bowl. Lol. The losses in Cleveland are definitely a blemish on tomlin's career, but I'm not going to say the sky is falling until we fail to handle the Bengals this weekend. If we lose to the bengals, then it's time to worry. And not for nothing, but the Bengals are losing games while they're putting up close to 30 points and 400 yards. However, so are the ravens, and we handled the ravens.

  • @JasonW-z6p

I'm kind of starting to wonder if Russell Wilson just sucks at throwing into the red zone this year, which doesn't make much sense because you would think it would be easier to throw short yardage throws than to throw deep ball moon shots. I trust Wilson to throw the long ball. I don't trust fields to throw anything farther than 10 to 15 yds, if that. So that makes me wonder...... should we just have Wilson march (throw) us down the field, and then use Fields once we get into the red zone? Because if I'm the defense and I See Fields come out there, I feel like my best bet is to just shut all the run lanes down and dare the guy (who averages 180 yds passing per start) to throw the ball. I feel like if you're going to use fields at all, you might as well use him in the Red Zone situations. But then that seems like kind of a jerk move to take the ball away from the guy that did all the heavy lifting to move you 50+ yds down the field to begin with... but if that's the case, then that means Fields is essentially a gadget player. And I'm sorry to all you fieldies out there, but a gadget player is not a franchise quarterback.

I get so tired of how these pundits talk about Russ and the deep ball. As much as he is known for this, it still talked about like it’s hit miss. They never bring up his efficiency. It’s his super power it makes him a unicorn but it also something no coach wants to hang their hat on. And that’s why Russell is still trying to find a place where he can just be great. Living through others’ mental limitations is hard.

Although I still trust in Russ, the team in general really let us down. Inconsistency on both sides of the ball and bad coaching decisions, are not going to get it done against a team that EVERYONE knew would be ready to pull off the upset. And what happened to our vaunted defense in the 4th quarter ?? I get that it’s only one game, but the Steelers have extra time to prepare for Cincinnati. If they don’t get it done in that game, regardless of the weather, they’ll be handing the division right back to Baltimore.
