Master Hyperfocal Distance for SHARP Landscape Photos
Ever wondered how to get your entire landscape shot-from the nearest rocks to the distant mountains-sharp and in focus? That’s where hyperfocal distance comes in. In this video, I’ll break down what hyperfocal distance is, why it’s useful, and how to apply it without getting bogged down in technicalities. 🌄
Hyperfocal distance is a guideline that helps maximize the depth of field in your shots. It’s about finding that ideal focus point to keep as much of the scene sharp as possible. I’ll show you a straightforward approach that works well in the field, especially in unpredictable outdoor conditions. And don’t worry-you don’t need to be super precise with measurements!
Here’s what you’ll learn:
What is Hyperfocal Distance? Understanding this focus technique for maximum depth of field.
Why Use It? How it helps create sharp, front-to-back focus in landscape photography.
Practical Estimation Tips - Learn how to eyeball it without complicated calculations.
Choosing the Right Aperture - The best settings for sharpness and depth, plus tips for different focal lengths.
If you're new here, my name is Are Ole, and I make weekly videos to share outdoor photography tips, tricks, and inspiration. If you want to improve your photography or enjoy beautiful landscapes, consider subscribing and giving this video a like!
Thanks for watching, and remember-don’t get too caught up in the details! Stay creative, enjoy the process, and let nature inspire your shots. 🌊📸

What was the app you mentioned? I always stick to the small aperture (usually f/11 or f/13) and focusing about a third into the picture, but I am still curious about the app.
Hey, the app is called photo pills, it’s realy good for planing almost anything in photography , from where the sun, moon, milkiway will rise and set, but also to find the hyper focal length for for your camera and focal length at any given aperture
@AreOle_photography Thank you!
Thanks Dear Excellent tips!
@@griseldatavera7902 Thanks so much my friend, I’m realy glad you found them useful☺️
I also want to add that the longer the focal length the shallower the depth of field and the longer the hyperfocal distance will be, but usually the close forgeound isn’t very important when we use a telephoto lens. I had a section in the video about this , but had to cut it out due to wind noise. Hope the video is useful, have a great day📸☕️
Stepping away from ISO 100 can unlock more creative potential! Higher ISOs let you shoot in lower light and experiment with different textures and effects. Don’t be afraid of a little noise-it can add character to your images!"
Couldn’t agree more☺️
@@AreOle_photography What's your opinion
Fin film og gode tips 👍alltid noe nytt å lære og tenke over 🤩
Tusen takk☺️
Nice Are ! Love the background..beautiful! Keep it going !!
Thanks Arthur ☺️🙏
Fin film, gode tips 😊
Tusen takk🙏☺️
Indeed. So far I’ve been taking my photos as much as possible in base ISO but lately I’ve been thinking to experiment more with a bit higher ISOs to compare the results. Completely agree that noise is easy to reduce nowadays, but fixing a blurry image is almost impossible. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that.
Thanks so much for the coment, I’m glad my thoughts on this resonated, I always like to experiment with my settings to find out what works best for me in any given setting, good luck and have a nice evening😀
Great Advice, Your right its old advice to always stick to ISO 100. Nice shots. How are you finding that Tamron 50-400? I got it last year and Absolutely love it.
I realy like it, had it for a year now and it’s my favorite lens , I think it’s on my camera about 70% of the time I’m out photographin. Thans for the comment 😀
Show de bola, abraços.
Obrigado! Fico feliz que tenha gostado☺️
I don't think it's a game changer. I know it's been around for awhile. I don't use it. I'm a landscape photographer and I also do portraits. I don't like it because my brain doesn't like it and I don't find that I need to the auto focus on the new cameras is so good that I don't feel like I need to use it
Sorry for the thumbnail, I don’t belive it’s a matter of one thing beeing right or wrong , just a matter of personal taste, I prefer the back button, but I have seen your photos on IG and they are great , so whatever you do clearly works for you, but I think beginners might benefit from trying it and making up their own mind if they like it or not
@@AreOle_photography yeah that I do agree with actually and it's something a few of my students that I do teach locally I teach what I call community based Photography and I've shown it to a few people. I think it's just my brain. It doesn't equate where my finger sits. I also use a GFX camera which is relatively slow focusing anyway so it kinda isn't really beneficial but thanks for your video man. I like your channel.
Thanks man I’m glad to hear that, I’m new to this space so I have a lot to learn about teaching. How do you find the GFX system? / how is to work with the big files?
@@AreOle_photography it's not too bad. I have a MacBook Pro 16 GB of RAM M1 chip and it handles it okay? It's a little bit slow with stacking ... but I don't stack too much. It's a great camera. I cannot fold it really.
I never thought about using the back button focus but after watching this video, I feel like I should give it a try. Thanks for sharing AreOle!
I realy like it, it takes a little getting used to but I feel like it gives more control , let me know how it goes. Have a great day☕️📸
@AreOle_photography Thanks! you too!
This man is staring into my soul
Haha, I forget to blink when I’m doing these videos inside, anyways thanks for watching and have a great day
Fin film Are Ole. Ønsker deg en fin ettermiddag 😊
Tusen takk, ha en fin ettermiddag🍂☕️
Awesome video.
Thank you☺️
Good review! How does the stabilizer behave? There are many reviews that he is weak. What is the shutter speed at 400mm? Thanks!
I would say the stabilization is quite good, when pared with the IBIS in my Sony A7r iii, but in low light I use a tripod. And if I shoot handheld at 400mm I would probably use at least 1/400sec for sharp images , of course it’s not as good as the Sony G master but for the price I think it’s a great lens, I use it all the time, my most used lens the last year
Great review my friend. Keep it up
Thank you☺️
Nydelig resultat 👏👏👏
Tusen takk☺️
Great video bro! just a minor comment/request, you should add the settings of the sample photos you took. Helps beginners like me understand the concept in a more practical way with values. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the feedback, I make videos in batches, but from next video and in the future I will add setting/ exif data for all my example photos. Have a nice day :)
Gode tips 👏👏👏
Tusen hjertelig takk☺️☺️
Coool tips 👍

What a beautiful result Are! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us
Thanks so much ☺️
Keep It up Are 👍👍👍😉💪💪
Thanks Arthur☺️
Gode tips og flott natur👏👍👏
Tusen hjertelig takk ☺️🙏
Stability in camera helps ... Also, knowing how to use a camera.Put the camera in burst. My usually the second or third photo will be the sharp. One pressing the button on the back of the camera for back button focus.Or even typical shutter release Will mean. The camera moves
I definitely agree with you, I use all these techniques my self also, the video was maybe a bit to simplified , but I though it might be useful for a beginner, but I will try to make a better one in the feature where I include all those points. Thanks for the feedback!!
Coool video and tips and lovely place🤩👏
Thanks, I’m glad you liked the video and the tips. Have a nice weekend☺️🙏📸
Thanks Ollie for the tip with "burst"...I've even did not knowing it was on my camera!!!
I’m glad it was useful☺️
Great video, thanks for sharing. You have a new subscriber 🤙
Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked it☺️
Ollie's a great companion. It would be great to know what settings you've used too. I'm a new subscriber and I prefer channels like yours. They give me the impression of a real photographer, enjoying what they're doing.
Thanks so much , I’m glad to hear that!!! Do you mean to include setting when I show my photos? ( that I can do the next video I’m making) if you want to know the settings to a specific photo I’m more than happy to share it with you. Have a nice day☺️
@@AreOle_photography Thanks for the reply, always appreciated. I meant when you show the fantastic photos, perhaps a small print in the corner of what aperture, shutter speed, ISO was used. Personally, I like to see what others do, in comparison to myself. If it's better than mine, I'd copy you! 😁
@@janneroz-photographyonabudget Hehe, I learn a lot from seeing what other people do to, I make my videos in batches , but for the next batch of videos I make, I will definitely try to find a good way to share the settings for the images i use in the videos
stabilisation off or on??
I forgot to mention it, but I usually turn of stabilization
Nicely done Are and great tips ! Ps love Ollie ❤
Thanks so much Arthur 💙🙏
What is ICM photography? Do you have more sources of inspiration?
Hey, ICM stands for intentional camera movement , which means that you move the camera to create a form of motion blur. I have many sources of inspiration, both other photographers and art forms.
Great simple summary with nice photo examples. I have the Tamron 28-200 on my Sony and do maybe 80% of my shooting with it, the rest with the 55mm Sony Zeiss. I would like to get a longer focal length at some point, to 400mm would be great so that I can capture the occasional wildlife. I will take a closer look at this lens.
I’m very happy with it, but the 28-200 is also very good I belive , I have heard many good things about it☺️ Thanks for the coment🙏
You sir have a beautiful dog, and I really appreciate the tips given in this video I’ll be implementing them on my next session. Do you have a free post production software that you’d recommend?
Thank you, he is a good boy. Im glad you Found the tips helpful!! I belive snapseed is free and its very good with raw suport, i use Lightroom classic on my laptop, it cost a monthly fee, but i think its worth it☺️ let me know how it went when you got to try out the tips from the video.. have a great day
@@AreOle_photography I’ll check both of those out. I recently switched to using an older dslr camera rather than my phone camera, so I wasn’t certain on immediately paying for software if there were decent options for free. I took some photos of my dog using a higher shutter speed as you recommended in your other video and the photos came out smoother 😁
I’m happy to hear that it worked, have you found a good softwear to use? / I forgot to mention that Lumimar also have many good options
Yo! great video, I was cruising YT trying to small photographer/creators like you! Keep it up, loved the video!

Good tips! Using a polarizing filter is another helpful one in certain situations.
Thank you☺️a polerizer is definetly very good in many situations, Its my most used filter.
I really enjoy ICM and longer shutter speeds for waves. I don't know why I haven't tried panning much. But after seeing your video, I am inspired to try it.
Im realy glad to hear that, let me know when you tried it and how it went. Have a great day☕️
