Encouraged by the swallowing resolution
Did you have arm weakness and atrophy pre surgery? Thansk!
I had bilateral tingling, numbness, and weakness. I’d routinely drop things. That all resolved with the surgery, and I think the foraminotomy helped significantly with the nerve compression.
hello, i am writing from Turkey, i have a mild spinal chord compression between C6-C7. i am resisting not to have surgery because my symptoms are soft, sometimes some burnin on my feet, occasionally little bit of numbness on my right hand fingers, no pain. it’s been going on for 2 months since i fell from showjumping horse. i hope the hernia will heal itself in time. using collar etc. do you think that i am on a right path avoiding surgery? because i feel ok, no power loss. but surgents tells me that i need acdf surgery
@@ozdemirosman I’m not a Dr, but it is my understanding that issues with legs and feet are typically not from the cervical area…often they are thoracic or lumbar (lower spine) related. I would also think that falling from a horse could ‘potentially’ cause some issues that could resolve as swelling and soreness went away provided there is no structural damage from the fall. With that said if the surgeons are strongly suggesting ACDF at c6-7 it could be because there is damage there, and they want to preserve as much Nerve function as possible, so things don’t get worse. Again, I don’t see how the burning in feet could be from C6/C7 do some searching for spinal nerve chart and you’ll see what I mean. ….I’m thinking L4/L5 area for numb feet. Did you land on your butt?
@@BarrysRecovery Thank you for the quick reply Barry. i blacked out after the fall, they said i fell on my shoulder and head. i will do some search as you said, i have read that it may affect the nerve tips of the feet also, i will look again as you said, the nerve chart.. I wonder if you had any kind of power loss before the surgery, and after the surgery did you get back your power?
@@ozdemirosman I had severe loss of strength in both hands. I was constantly dropping things and I could not make my pinky and thumb touch. As soon as I woke up all of hat had resolved, what fixed that for me was the foraminotomy portion where they expand the foraminal space to make more room for nerve. 👍
@@BarrysRecovery very happy to hear that because my main reason avoiding surgery is that i have no pain and no power loss while having an extruded disc. very kind of you to respond all the comments here. Thank you Barry. i am sending you my bests. i will keep this comment section informed for any progress in my case.
Im 2nd day post op from a C3-C4 ACDF operation.. Only one night in hospital, no neck brace and surprised at how well its going... So far, so good....
That is fantastic news! Take it slow and stay ahead of the pain...and start walking as soon as you can to increase blood flow and loosen things up.
Thank you . But you could still swallow a little ?
Yes! It just felt like there was something caught in my throat. What I would do is start with tiny sips of ice water. That would help loosen things up.
Did you have severe fatigue or tinnitus before the surgery and if you did did it resolve itself one of my major symptoms is feeling like I've been drugged feeling confusion disorientation did you experience any of that before the surgery
I had tinnitus both before and after the surgery. I had a lot of brain fog and definitely felt like I had been drugged or sedated prior to the surgery. Brain fog/nausea resolved for me.
Did you have trouble breathing
Hi Linda, no I never had trouble breathing, just some swallowing discomfort for a period of time. I would strongly suggest you contact the surgeon immediately if you’re having difficulty breathing. Good luck🙏
Good day Barry 😊. Hope you are doing well these days. You were a big part of my recovery when I had the acdf done last November. I struggled with the lingering discomfort for sometime and you kept encouraging me along the way. I did finally get to a place where I was about 90 percent pain free. Not fully out of the woods but doing really good. However my holistic chiropractor offered a massage session that looking back I truly did not need. She did a lot of massage in my neck and lots of deep stretching. Well that was not a good idea because it put me right back where I was when all muscles and tendons and ligaments were healing. On top of that cause cervical paraspinal muscle spasm on left side of neck muscle that crosses over the left ftont side of my neck where scar is. I’m still healing from all that and the massage was June 24. It’s discouraging to say the least but I’ve come back to your vid’s to help me once again. 😊💞
Oh no! That’s horrible. Sounds like they may have done too much too fast. Probably trying to loose. Everything up in one shot…ugh. I’m so sorry you had a set back. I still use my massager…..because I carry tension and stress in my upper back/neck…and this little thing was so worth the $40 amzn.to/3WRDvQh I’ve learned slow and steady….and yeah it’s gotta be frustrating getting to 90%, and then having such a big setback. Hang in there, keep walking, gentle stretching, and maybe some moist heat when it gets bad (here’s a link to all he stuff that helped me) sites.google.com/view/barrys-recovery/favorite-products?authuser=0 i’m hoping that in a short time, I’ll hear back from you that you’re feeling much better. All the best.
@@BarrysRecovery I believe so too. And yes I got that massager you recommended back after my surgery and it is awesome. Had to pull that back out and also the moist heat canvas thing. Use that too. I will definitely update you. 😊
@@BarrysRecovery I meant to also tell you I did have my surgeon take X-rays and even had an MRI to make sure my surgery site was not effected in any way by this rigidous stretching that was done and she said everything was in tack. That I was happy to hear. 😊
It would be really difficult for somebody to mess up the fusion especially if you have hardware in place. Those screws and plate really don’t move. Unfortunately on x-ray they can’t tell what’s going on with soft tissues and nerves. They may have just really aggravated everything in that area. I hope it quiet down for you soon.
@@BarrysRecovery my thoughts exactly
I just had the surgery done last week.
How are you feeling?
@@BarrysRecovery I'm having a rough morning. The back of my neck hurts in-between my shoulder blades
Yes, I remember that very well. Did they give you muscle relaxers? I found the muscle relaxers helped greatly. To me, it felt like they had stretched everything out and all of those muscles and tendons were very tight because of the new space. Muscle relaxers helped me very much. Also, as soon as I got the OK to go out and walk that really was a game changer for me. You can also try some breathing exercises where you focus on the tension and soreness and really make an effort to relax that area. You may be “guarding “which essentially means the muscles are tightened up to protect the area, and you need to focus on relaxing them, so that you are more comfortable?
Thanks for this, Barry. Got mine next Wednesday at our centre of spinal excellence here in the UK. Been dreading it, to be totally honest, but it's got to that point, now, where I have to have the op. Watching your vids has really helped, (especially because now I know I have a good chance of being fed ice cream) 😂 Atb Baz Campbell 👍🏻
I am happy you found me, and I was able to help. I hope your recovery goes really well and you get to enjoy some ice cream.
enjoy your coffees, My husband has difficulties on moving his lags as well. he needs to stay in rehab for 4-6 months, did you staid in rehab or you went home right after the surgery?
@@edelirashkoza6228 thank you so much for the coffees! I’m going to get some fresh 🫘 beans. I really appreciate it❤️👍. I was lucky and only had to stay in the hospital for one night. I hope your husband feels better soon and heals quickly. I’ll be thinking of him, and saying a prayer too.
Im having the same done in 13 days and I’m totally freaked out about mobility. I danced my whole life. Water and snow skiing. ATVs. Boats. Horses. Mine was an injury.
@@shainagallaway4578 Shaina, if they’re doing the same levels that I had then mobility shouldn’t be compromised too much. Much of the head rotation happens higher up. Talk to your dr and have them explain what to expect. I really don’t notice any mobility limitations at all….maybe I can’t turn quite as far as I used to…..but nothing to stop me from doing what I want.
I just hit the 6 week mark today after my acdf, my main thing is it is still hard to turn my head. The swallowing was hard and getting worse after surgery, they gave me prednisone which helped tremendously a few hours after the first dose. Over all it has not been to bad, but this is my third spine surgery so I kind of knew what to expect.
Yeah, the swallowing thing is a pain in the neck (bad joke) but, it does get better. I really found starting slowly...little sips, getting those muscles to work in order really helped. Sorry you needed 3 surgeries...I am at two for my neck now....may need 3rd too....time will tell. Keep healing :-)
@@BarrysRecovery Thank you very much, the two other surgeries were for my lumbar spine, last one being a fusion. Hopefully we both can give our spines a break and not need anymore surgery Haha.
@@newguy1122 yes, less surgery and more living life👍
Wow, you had it bad.....I had 4 disc's replaced 7 weeks ago....all's better except swallowing....but it's getting slowly better..... You mentioned the muscles at the back of your head....mine too....that was bad. Take Care
@@mikeerstad3705 I’m all good now. But I do remember the tightness of the muscles in the upper back. Here’s a link to some products that really helped me. Especially the heating pad/hydrocollator and the massager. All these years later, I still use the massager.👍. sites.google.com/view/barrys-recovery/favorite-products
One week out
did you have anything going on at C4-C5, and choose not to fuse that level? I'm in a situation where I for sure need to fuse C5-C7, but it's a judgment call whether to do a third level, so I'm curious if you were also in that situation. I have some herniation there, and some spondylolisthesis, but it's nothing I would seek surgery for on its own, unlike the lower to levels
*two
I was fine above and below those areas so for me, it was just C5, 6,7. And that was enough for me lol
Thanks Barry. I am going to have surgery 30th of July. Your calm demeanor is very reassuring. Cheers!!!!!
How did you make out with your surgery?
Not seeing a reduction in shoulder pain that I was hoping to see. But I am exactly a week into it.
What are your thoughts?
@@twowheelsgood28 what I found for me is that I had a lot of muscle tightness in the upper back, specifically in between my shoulder blades. For me personally, the muscle relaxers, hydrocollator, and walking while focusing on relaxing that area was very therapeutic for me and helped me expedite stretching out those muscles. if you think you are having muscle tightness and that’s where your pain is coming from, you might want to consider those (checking with your doctor first, of course).
Thank you SO much for these! We have a lot of similarities (also getting C5-C7 fusion and discectomy (and also NO disc between vertebrae). 7/17 for me! I'm SO looking forward to it because this keeps me from doing so much!
I’m so glad you found my journey helpful. My only regret is that I really wish I had done this sooner. I suffered for a lot longer than I needed to. In the links, you should find a webpage that I created where I have a whole list of Products that help me during recovery.
Barry, I was just diagnosed with Eagle Syndrome and suspect I have VOO as well. I am completely disabled and have many symptoms. The worst is 24/7 severe headaches that nothing helps. I also have constant dizziness, nausea, neck pain, visual loss, tinnitinus, muscle weakness. I am looking into seeing Dr. Cognetti in Philidelphia. Is that the doctor you saw and how long did it take to get in? I am in Arkansas, so It is going to be hard for me. I also have nutcracker syndrome that makes this difficult.
Kevin, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My Dr is Peter Costantino and he operates out of Stamford Hospital in CT. I hope you get the help you need soon.
Thank u for the updates. I'm still apprehensive about getting this surgery since I need 3&4 plus 5&6 fused. I'm 65 yrs old & have other medical issues but I am grateful for your progression thru this type of surgery. God Bless & Keep Smilin!!
I’m sorry you are struggling. I hope you find relief.
I've been told I need a 5 level fusion (C4 to T2). The cord is compressed to AP diameter of 5mm at C7/T1. I'm holding off atm as the risk of ADD increases with increasing size of fusion...plus I have EDS (so very hypermobile spine) and that increases the ADD risk further. It's all a bit rubbish tbh.
I am so very sorry to hear you are going through this. My advice is to find the absolute BEST surgeon you can find (even if it involves some travel) I really hope you get the care you need and begin your own healing journey.
Symptoms of compression? .tell me symptoms. I have lipoma , a lump of fat in neck probably compressing jugualar vein.i have nausea ,vertigo and weakness.what symptoms did you have?
Jugular Vein Compression can cause a whole lot of symptoms including (but not limited to): Brain Fog, Dizziness, Confusion, Unsteadiness, Disassociation, Tiredness. Problems with Vision, Hearing, Memory. Anxiety, Stress, Depression, Crankiness, Nausea, Nerve Related problems, and more. What can cause this to happen: Compression can be caused by many things including inadequate space due to: elongated Styloids, C1 Transverse Process, Digastric Muscle, Arteries, Nerves, or other things crossing into the Jugular Vein space and causing compression. Often there are multiple contributors to the issue. Caution: I've heard from many people stating they required second surgery because the initial surgeon "only removed the styloid" More information available on my new web site sites.google.com/view/barrys-recovery/jugular-vein

Thanks for the video. I do think that is my problem. I see Kyle Fargen July 5 and 8 for diagnostic venogram. Dallas Texas doctors have been unable to help me
Good luck. I hope you get the help you need and deserve soon.
How did you make out? Hoping you got some answers.
Been told today I need a 4 level fusion C4 to T1 so it's good to hear your progress was excellent with a very positive outcome!
I’m sorry to hear that you need that large of a fusion. You’ll find a lot of stories on UA-cam of people that have had very good success and outcomes after multilevel fusion. I am certainly one of them and I would do it again tomorrow if I needed to. Here is a guy named Russ that had a four level. You may want to check his videos out too. youtube.com/@learnatmyexpense?si=VqaPM3RQMTMLYV1I
@@BarrysRecovery Many thanks for the link, Barry. I have to say that I was somewhat intimidated by the number of levels required. I lost the use of my hands in January which was quite frightening. The function is slowly coming back - not sure if I'll recover all the function - but I certainly don't want a repeat of that experience! I couldn't use a knife and fork, do buttons...even turn on a light switch!
@Hide_and_silk I am very hopeful that the foraminotomy portion of the procedure gives you back complete and totally use of your hands. That was the part that was absolute magic for me. Getting my hands back. When I woke up in the recovery room and could use my hands fully. I started to cry. That coupled with no longer having the horrific burning pain was a complete game changer. I hope and pray your results are similar.❤️🙏🤞
What is this diagnostic? Is this CT angiography? Thank you.

Thanks, I'll check out new page. Hope all is well.
Just had a 3 level cervical fusion May 14th. Recovering well. Confused about the lack of pt. I walk 5 to 9 miles a day. Anything you're allowed to do regarding lifting small weights with your arms?
Hey, congratulations! You’re on the road to recovery. I was not allowed to lift anything heavier than 5 lbs for the first month, then a little more the next, and again the next. After 12 weeks I was clear. They don’t want you limiting anything to prevent injury to the area where they fused. Check with your doctor, they should have given you very specific instructions.
Very helpful and positive thank you for sharing

Curious if shaving the TP of C1 affects the stability of the head. Did Dr Costantino discuss if this was ever an issue or not? I think my husband prolly needs his shaved bc I wonder if he has venous outflow obstruction but he does have a large head.
Stability was not something I discussed with him, and I really don’t know the answer. I too have a big head 😀

That’s great! How are you doing? Any surprises (good or bad)?
@@BarrysRecovery i’ll say the only real suprise is the difficulty swallowing for right after surgery till now ( still struggling ) have had swelling in the feet and ankles also , that seems to be improving ! My main issues were pre surgery were neck pain , headaches , numbness in the left hand , and vertigo that just has come on in the last 4 months . all but the vertigo is gone and even it seems to have lessened . My surgeon say the vertigo is not from the neck issues , however many other practitioners have maintained there could be a connection . i have tried all the therapies for it with no success!. Recently ive learned about occipital neuralgia . I’m feeling like it may be related to that ?? anyway : Thank You again for all of your videos 🙏

That's basically the same thing the doctor told me that he thinks it's looks like the C1 and the styloid are pressing on the jugular and compressing Dr Osborne said we really don't know until we cut you open and see what's going on which to me sounds a little bit nutty to go through such an invasive surgery to find out that there was nothing wrong and that it could be something else who would you recommend and who was the doctor that dealt with you

In the beginning the muscle relaxers helped me greatly, then when dr said it was ok, hydrocollator (moist heat) and walking helped. Getting a CTA and CTV in a couple of weeks. From trauma birth my left SCM seems to have been tight my entire life (25 years) and its very wide, bulging out of the side of my neck now. I have brain fog for as long as I can remember and recently found that when I lift my SCM away from the IJV my brain fog starts to clear up.. INCREDIBLE! After the CTA/CTV confirm its only the SCM causing the IJV compression then I will most likely go for botox since stretching it does not release the tightness.. Longing for that brain fog to be gone :) Thank you for sharing your story Barry!
So glad you are getting the care you need and deserve.
I am having scans, Xray, CT tomorrow (Thursday) and MRI Sunday (back log). The surgeon has suggested surgery. However, it will only prevent the symptoms getting worse.

Every time I lift or move (push) something I get the same symptoms. My neck feels stiff and swollen, with restricted movement right, left, up or down. I cannot walk heel to toe with my eyes closed and have difficulty doing this with my eyes open. I feel like I am drunk my head feels spaced out as if walking on the deck of a rocking boat. My little finger on my left hand goes off on its own when I try to hold my fingers out close together. I have two sore spots on my cervical spine. One just above the bottom of my shoulder blades and the other level with the top of my shoulders. The surgeon has suggested surgery and said the signals going up and down my spine are getting mixed up. However, he stressed that surgery will not fix the problems it will only prevent further deterioration. I have had the Motion study X-ray and CT scans today. I get the MRI on Sunday. Then my consult is booked for Tuesday. Hopefully we will know more then. Cheers.
