Grasmere Rushbearing
The Grasmere Rushbearing ceremony today is a procession through the village with bearings made from rushes and flowers. The procession features six Maids of Honour, a brass band, the church choir, and everyone who wishes to join in by carrying their own decorated rushbearing. Midway in the procession the Rushbearing Hymn is sung. The procession ends with a service at St Oswald's Church, the floor strewn with rushes.

The prior impressed by this devotion , bestowed upon the a flitch of bacon. In return the Lord gave his land to the priory ...

In the Yorkshire village of West Witton, on the Saturday nearest to St Bartholomews Day, Bartle, a slightly more than life size effigy of a man is carried through the street to his eventual stabbing and fiery end. On the way he stops at pubs and houses, the chant is taken up, and some of the crowd take on drink. One story says that he was a pig thief, and hundreds of years ago was chased over P...

I remember the Maypole queen, sadly when i was in year 6, it was the 2nd year before the maypole was coming up. Last time was so sad, they couldnt get up because of the 'rain'
Happy Beltane to you all
Lived there for 3 years but never saw a trial unfortunately. Nice place with decent people.
A great little film, thank you!
Jeff was the ultimate horse
Brilliant customs- I dop hope they continue
I'm sure we will Fred. It's our intention that we won't give this 'Covid' year a miss, although it I suspect it will take a significant hit in the number of performances we end up doing.
It's Easter and snow is falling. ^_^
Hello, Great Video! I work for STV and we make a programme for the BBC called Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. We are filming a short segment in one of our episodes with The Blazing Stump Folk CLub about the 'Hobby Horse' performance and re-creating the performance. We would like to use a video showing a previous Hobby Horse performance taking place as a short example and I wondered if we would be able to use your video? If easier I can be contact via e-mail, my address is grace.binnie@stv.tv. Kind regards, Grace
Why isn't there more of this?
I hope they're still "blacking up" and not listening to PC idiots!
This is great! Keep it up people...keep it up. Don’t ever stop. When it all comes crumbling down, I expect to be dancing with the Morris dancers in the ruins and then start again.
Pølse er sejt
The band themselves deserve the utmost of credit and the boys are the ultimate in traditional dancers.
Minehead - the very very best....
If they forget...then the world as we know it...will disappear.
Oh wow. I remember being in this. It's so weird to watch it years later.
I get freaked out when the bolster comes my way but if it is away from me I enjoy it
Same 😅
Fascinating! Mesmerizing--the haunting tune, the simple dance step, the hobby horse, the umbrella, the triangle--I want to learn more.
Used to go to this when I lived in the Cotswolds. The costumes are passed down through generations..
Terrific tradition, hope its shines on the lads this Easter. I remember the Nutters practicing in the Dog and Partridge in 1963, no black faces then, just grime from the mills. But when they turned up in the full Monty at Easter it was, and still is magical . I once tried to find out the name of the tune for the agrland dance and walked with the brass band, one fella said all he had to play was oompah oompah, I saw his dots on the page and there wasn't a melody there, no name either. So I walked on further with them stopped at every pub , I had a pint of mild in each and when they reached the end point, (the garage at entrance to the Glen) I couldn't read anything.
I participated in this ritual in 1985. It was great.
THERE ARE 8 BELLS

I was watching a video on a Shakespeare blog and it reminded me of when I lived at Colerne in the 1970s. I recall going to see the Mummers on Marshfield on Boxing Day and was delighted to find this video.
absolutely mesmerising
Im quite sure Anthony Cumia would love this, and maybe fly them over to perform for his birthday celebration ?.
