Glad I found your channel. A man after my own nerd of the word heart. one or two for consideration might be Witsius Economy of the covenants, and Cunninghams Historical Theology, which is currently dumbfounding me in regards to how unknown an English speaking theologian of this prowess could be. I know they might qualify in different modern categories, but they are definitely both systematic theologies in the classical sense. Thanks for your work, may God continue to bear fruit in you. Godspeed
I want to thank you for ur channel. Ur book recommendations are a gem I am a layperson in Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma. I am a puritan and reformed theology fiend 😊 Keep up the good work,God bless
Keep up the good work of advancing the Puritan and Reformed Faith in OK, brother! SDG!
Who’s your favorite Biblical pastor?
I would say as for "celebrity" pastor, I am very grateful for the pastoral ministry of Dr. Joel Beeke. But I am much more thankful for the pastors I have had in my life.
My wife wants to thank you so much for adding more books to my list. Apparently I don’t have enough. LOL
I aim to serve LOL
The first idea come in when I see the titile is "ouch, I just clear my cart for Christmas!"
Been reading Bavinck, Vos, and Calvin recently. Not P&R, but also Spurgeon.
Fantastic! RHB sell volumes 1 & 2 of Thomas Boston works with dust jackets 😊
Actually, you mentioned these before I reached the end of your excellent podcast 😅. They are volumes 1 & 2 in that 12 volume set. I only wish that I could purchase all the volumes separately with regards to a limited budget. Boston is brilliant.
Agreed! He is seriously one of the greats, and so incredibly thankful to RHB for publishing all of his works. What a treasure!
And once again The Nerdy Pastor puts a hurt on my credit card! He's a dangerous man! Love your videos. Have purchased many of your suggestions, the latest being Paul by F.F. Bruce and The Crucifixion by Fleming Rutledge. Looking forward to Nos. 1-7 of your favorite reformed authors.
Appreciate your encouragement, brother - but many apologies to your credit card! :)
My 2 favorite are Jame R White, R.,C Sproul
I think my favorite Reformed Theologian is probably Thomas Watson or Brakel. My favorite modern would be Beeke or Poythress
These are my faves as well at the moment
Honorable Mentions Dr Gaffin Dr Venema Dr Fesko Dr Van Til Dr John Murray Dr Warfield Petrus van Matrisct Dr Louis Dabney Dr Berkhof
Richard Muller disagrees that it is strange nomenclature. And the champion of the anti-RB take, by his own "logic" is more Anabaptist than the RB, given he denies original Westminster on the Civil Magistrate for American religious liberty. A rare disappointing take.
Hi friend. I appreciate your feedback. However, there's a difference with disagreeing and being quarrelsome. Many of your replies have a quarrelsomeness to them. Please refrain moving forward. Thanks.
Thanks 🙏.
Am I dumb or did Turretin miss the list?
I gave him a brief overview at the start of the video.
Can someone enlighten me on the value of reading Maximus the Confessor? He already seems rather Eastern. I’ve been trying to start reading the church fathers and I’ve not yet decided if I should add Maximus the Confessor to my already-long list of to-reads
His value is especially seen in 7th century controversies about the nature of Christ, which is why he received the title "The Confessor" because of his orthodox witness. His teaching is also very important to help us further understand God's Incarnation in Christ and humanity made in the Imago Dei. He is also certainly more Eastern in his theology, but the West can benefit. However, he does hold to a form of Universal Redemption, which should be avoided and resisted. He continues Origin's heresy there. Hope this helps, brother.
@@thenerdypastor2778 Thank you!
A tip I use is, for those hard-to-find books that occasionally pop up on eBay, set up searches for them on the site and the site will let you know when someone posts a listing to check out (have been able to get my hands on a number of things like this), and...conferences/assemblies seem to be a good source for book discounts as well haha - thanks for the post! (and mentioning an older video of yours that I'm gonna need to check out as well...)
I would say on the culture/controversy books where you're buying to be informed, not buying to have as a friend, that is the best use of Kindle. Buy it on E-book. Mark up your comments, transfer them to your Miscellanea, and then delete it or let it sit in the e-library instead of eating valuable shelf space a friend could have.
Thank you brother! Can you please leave your email adress below. Would love to get in touch. Blessings in Christ.
What about Kerstens Dogmatics? I got them recently, so good
They are faithful, but I wouldn't put them at the top.
What reading list and directives would you give to someone who is starting seminary in a year? What would you say to focus on?
Great question! I'll plan on doing a video for that. If you haven't subscribed yet, I hope you will!
Could you do a video on practical helps for personal study of the Westminster standards? How to read them systematically, devotional, and maybe your favorite recs for expositions and books about them
I sure can! I'll plan on doing a video on this before Christmas. Thank you for the suggestion!
Nice! I want to read Him We Proclaim, it’s been on my shelf for a while.
So far, it's been very, very good!
Thank you for the resource recommendations!
Nice 2-series spotlight on William Shedd. Thanks.
Thank you. Can you please do a video on those who are following Old Testament ceremonial laws, such as Hebrew Israelites, British Israelism etc. They emphasise the sabbath, feast days, clean and unclean foods etc. I believe your video is speaking about keeping the moral law in Jesus Christ, if I have understood correctly?
Yes, that's correct. The Moral Law, not the Old Covenant, is being spoken about in its practical uses.
Thank you for the in depth information on Hodge. My former pastor told me once that I need a sparring partner when it comes to theology and Hodge is my go to along with Shedd and Vos. Appreciate your channel. Be blessed.
Well said. And wb.
Thank you for the encouragement, brother! SDG!
I got this book some weeks ago and I’ve just finished page 125 of his Theoretical-Practical theology volume 2, and I am absolutely loving it his exegesis is soooo good and I model mine out of that as well, also his “best method of preaching” was also amazing. I am utterly fascinated by his work and am taking so many notes no wonder Johnathan Edward’s said such good things about this work. I can’t wait for the rest of the volumes to come out.
Amen,. brother and same!
Hi, Thank you for taking time out to produce such excellent videos... Clearly, you've read a lot! Just one question - could you either make a video showing the difference between the font size of the text in Systematic Theology by Robert Culver and A Body of Divinity by Thomas Watson. All I'd like to know is if the print size used in Culver's Systematic Theology is as small as those in Watson's Body of Divinity or is it smaller print or larger.. I find it a little difficult to read very small print for a long time, hence this query.. I'm considering purchasing RC's Systematic Theology, but would like your input on this with regards to the printed text. Thank you again for all your time and efforts.... You're being watched! Keep up the good work and God bless.
Thanks for the comment and feedback, Thomas, and for your encouragement! And as for comparing the font sizes between Culver's ST and Watson's BoD, I checked, and Culver's looks to be ~9 point font, while Watson's looks like the traditional 12-point font.
@@thenerdypastor2778 Thanks for responding... I have a copy of the "Banner of Truth' edition of Thomas Watson's Body of Divinity.. It does not look like it's a 12 point font... But I could well be mistaken... In any case, thanks for letting me know that the fonts for Culver's is much smaller than those in Watson's book.... That is most helpful. Thanks for all your kind help. God bless
Thanks! Been slowly working through the sabbath. I think I have come to the conclusion that it is a creation mandate but still working through it. Still trying to wrap my head around the implications. Any suggestions or recommendations on the topic that you think are definitive? Thanks for your videos…I do appreciate them!
Bavinck’s entire four volume Reformed Dogmatics is currently on sale for $150 at Reformation Heritage Books 🎉🙌🏼. I’ve held off buying the set because of the cost, but today is the day!
Way to go!! For Narnia, and for Aslan!!
Would you be able to point me in the direction of where I can find scripture that clearly shows when the requirement to practice the sabbath changed to Sunday vs. Saturday?
The Scripture that points to this shift of worship from Saturday to Sunday would be Matt. 28:1; Mk. 16:1-2; Lk. 24:1; Jn. 20:1 and Rev. 1:10, all following the resurrection of Christ. The Sabbath, while still in force morally for the practice of a believer (as to keeping it holy as a day of worship and rest), also contained a "shadowy element" in the OT Covenant (what's called "ceremonial law"). Thus, the Sabbath had a typological character to it that was fulfilled through the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Thus, Christ's resurrection both reinforces God's 10 Commandments (here, the 4th Commandment, which is a celebration of worship and rest from creation) and establishes an anticipation of the final arrival of the New Heavens and New Earth (for Sunday is a now a preview of an eternal Sunday, an everlasting Sabbath). Therefore, the resurrection advances the Day of Worship from Sabbath Saturday (the 7th Day of the week) to the Lord's Day Sunday (1st Day of the week). So, while the passages above make it clear that Sabbath Saturday has advanced to Sunday Lord's Day (the day of worship), it's a reflection of what Christ has done - His resurrection has "shifted" everything forward.
I appreciate your thorough response, it was very thoughtful of you. I’m new to this process of getting into the weeds regarding God’s requirements for us. It is intriguing, but it is also very easy to get my brain “wrapped around the axle” of scripture and theories. Thank you!
Thank you for the helpful tips. I am a part of a group of friends that started a reading group this summer. We kicked off the group with Henri Nouwens -Return of the Prodigal Son- I was the only group member that had already read it. It was a hit, we all saw ourselves in at least one of the characters, most identified with all 3.
Thank you for this helpful video. As far as I know Robert Haldane was not Presbyterian but was Baptist in his convictions. The churches established by him were certainly Baptist and not Presbyterian. Best wishes, David
Thanks for the clarification, brother! And thank you kindly for supporting this channel, I'm glad it is helpful. SDG!
Ive been trying to get christian friends to read The Way of Life for years because it has been so helpful to me.
Praise the Lord, brother! Keep after them!
Always a joy.
I've read some Crisp (Deviant Calvinism, etc...often insightful, even when I disagree 😅), so I might check out that book you referenced along with that Dogmatic Theology if I can get my hands on it...sometime...after the bajillion other books I've got in the queue are done...lol thanks for the video and looking forward to watching the next! (catching up on these haha)
Way to go, Ernest! Shedd's DT is AWESOME, and that volume by Crisp is helpful. Really cool to see a modern theologian engage so deeply with WGT Shedd. Shedd is so good and so timely for our current age.
That about John Frame? I was looking at that one? Thoughts?
I really like Frame, but his "Theology of Lordship" 4 volume doesn't meet the 1-volume requirement on this video. And his two one volumes ("Salvation Belongs to the Lord" and "An Introduction to Christian Belief") are both solid entries, but not Top 10 in my view, as they are more introductory.
Thank you Nerdy Pastor. Your work is always amazing! Comprehensive and saving lives.
Thank you so much for your encouragement! Praise God's grace in Christ. May we rest in His finished work, and follow hard after Him. God bless you.
Pastor, so encouraging. Thank you for sharing and spending your time and energy sharing your knowledge and love of Jesus. Thank you
Thank you so much for the encouragement, brother. May the Lord encourage us to be bold in sharing Him.
Great coaching.
I just read a Lloyd-Jones sermon in Ephesians that said this quote below. The whole sermon changed my mind about Christian "defeatism": "I sin because I'm weak and can't do anything about it". That type of thing. Always praying for help. While God does help us, He has given us this power has He not? He has not left us orphans: "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you." - Jn 14:18. I mean the whole sermon of his took down that feeling. I left it going wow! While I don't believe in perfectionism it has given me a feeling of God didn't just save me and walk away and leave me to myself. It is a warfare. It is a battle. But He has given us what we need. How often is warfare preached / taught on? Not much maybe. Prayer is good. But there is also a battle to go to. “...We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.” - Ac 14:22. Lloyd-Jones: “Surely we must recognise that this ‘Let go and let God’ teaching is quite unscriptural. If it were true, this whole section of the Epistle to the Ephesians, from verse 17 of the fourth chapter to the end of the Epistle, should never have been written at all. The Apostle should not have written these words, and he should not have gone on to say, Therefore, put away lying; speak truth every man with his neighbour; be ye angry and sin not; neither give place to the devil; let him that stole, steal no more. He would not have said these things; it would have been wrong for him to say them. Instead, he would have said, If any of you believers are tempted to steal, pray about it; let go, and ask the Lord to deliver you from it! But he says nothing of the kind. Instead he says, Those of you who have been given to stealing, stop doing it, steal no more, put off the old man! Thus it is obvious that the teaching which may sound very spiritual can be utterly unscriptural. It not only by-passes the Scripture, it denies the Scripture. ” Excerpt From Darkness and Light: An Exposition of Ephesians 4:17-5:17 D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Thank you for your videos. I've been watching a few now and have a renewed interest in taking up my Shedd systematic again. I was reading his chapter on Bibliology and had to underline (in Logos) this part near the beginning: "In this sense, all that man knows intuitively is revealed to him; for even his axiomatic knowledge does not originate from himself independently and apart from his Creator. All that he knows in this manner, he knows through his intellect, and this intellect is the workmanship of God. Man cognizes in accordance with the laws of human intelligence, and these laws are established by his maker." So would this cover everything? Math, science, chemistry, biology? If there is truth (as per Augustine I guess) then it's GOD's truth. Whatever truth it is. Not man's. 2+2=4 is a fact that both Christians and non-Christians can talk about because it's universally God's truth, albeit general revelation. What are your thoughts on the Shedd quote?
Shedd is right! All truth is God's truth, from natural revelation to supernatural revelation. All that we hear has been heard. All that we know has been told. All that we have has been received.
@@thenerdypastor2778 Thanks for your reply! Any interest in a future video on the history and maybe current happening within liberal theology? That's been an interest for me for a couple years now, although I haven't really delved deep into it. I know a good attack against it was from Machen with his book, but what is going on currently? What is the current battle? Or do you figure that line has almost died by now? A very interesting parallel line.
Uncle Bob Letham was my System Theology lecturer for my graduate diploma. It is good but I still prefer Grudem.
Letham's is so good, I think Grudem 2nd edition is much improved on his first, but still doesn't hold a candle to the Top 10.
Hi, can you do a review on the mystical theology of The Eastern Church by vladmir lossky
Hi Jordan, thanks for the comment/request. Yes, I have that book but have not read it. Hopefully I can present a review at some point.
Always excited to see a new video drop from you! 👍🏼
Thank you so much for your support and encouragement!
Valuable series. Thanks for taking this on!
I genuinely love this channel!
Thanks, Brandon! I hope you'll subscribe (if you haven't already). Appreciate your viewership and support!
What commentary series do you use? Modern? Old? Any whole Bible commentary or people you go to a lot?
As for whole commentary series, I enjoy a number of them (in no particular order): Calvin's Commentaries (Old & New Testament) Baker Exegetical Commentary Series New International Commentary Series on the Old & New Testaments (NICOT/NT) New American Commentary (NAC) Series Pillar Commentary Series Matthew Henry Commentary Series (Old, but faithful, devotionally-oriented series) Old & New Testament Library Series (Text-Critical Scholarship, be advised) Some stand-alone or individual commentaries in a series that I really enjoy: Psalms (William S. Plumer, Geneva Commentary Series) Ephesians (Harold Hoehner) John (Dale Bruner) Matthew, 2 Volumes (Dale Bruner) Any Commentary by Karen Jobes Any Commentary by Charles Hodge (Most are in Crossway Classics) Exodus (Douglas Stuart, NAC) Luke (Darrell Bock, BEC)
@@thenerdypastor2778 Great! this was helpful. I made note of what to look for at half price books. I will admit I am drawn to the aesthetically pleasing commentaries like the Geneva and EBTC haha. Thanks!
I am tasked with the reopening of our church library that has been closed for over 2 years. There is a sizable section of Christian Fiction that neither I nor my Pastors are overly excited about. I have been asked to weed that section down as much as possible leaving only what might be profitable but I have no knowledge of the Christian Fiction world (I’ve read nearly zero of it). As a Traditional, Conservative Baptist Church (Not Reformed) I could use some direction of author’s to avoid and author’s to look for.
Hi, thanks for your question! I would say fiction is a very underdeveloped area for solid, Christian resources, but you can't go wrong by including: - John Bunyan's allegories (Pilgrim's Progress, Parts 1&2; Holy War; The Life and Death of Mr. Badman) - C.S. Lewis's fiction (Space Trilogy, Narnia Series) - J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth works and Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I would also suggest you research New Growth Press, which has fantastic youth fiction rich in Christian theology. That's what I would start with and branch out from there. And please subscribe (if you haven't). Thanks for watching, friend!
@@thenerdypastor2778 Thank you. Bunyan is always a good source. Unfortunately the library already has about 800 or so modern fiction books on the shelves that I have to sort. Thankfully I’ve yet to see any authors I know are theologically terrible. It seems the previous librarian was aware of some to avoid.
