Hi,
Welcome to my channel, where I post videos just for the fun of sharing experiences of hiking in Ireland. Very new to the world of making videos and video editing, so bear with me as I learn more about how to make them.
My brother Aonghus and I are hoping to get through the full Beara-Breifne way, which is a large portion of the Ireland way throughout the summers of 2020 and 2021. We hope that by showing the terrain and the experience we have, we can help future walkers/trail runners of all or part of the route prepare better for their own adventures. Also, maybe inspire some people to get outdoors and walk more like UA-cam videos did for us during the lockdowns of the last year or so.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets exasperated with Ireland's trail markings!
Thanks for the video, heading off this Sunday to do this.
My Grandfather Edward McGovern was living in Tents Townland County Cavan in 1911...Doyou have any footage of that area?...Im loving your clips
Although the Cavan way passes nearby that area, I don't believe it goes through it. You can see the map of the full trail here: www.sportireland.ie/outdoors/walking/trails/cavan-way I hope you get to visit some day! It's lovely area! I'd say it's changed a lot since your grandfather lived there!
Love how positive you still were despite the setbacks :) Did ye stay the night somewhere around Killakee or find a way in to the city? Trying to figure out splitting this over two days!
This is the first video we ever recorded and were fairly clueless, but also enjoying it 😅 Had to go back into the city, especially with the dog! There's plenty of coverage around those parts and it's only about 15 minutes drive from civilisation so either organising a lift or trying a taxi is the way to go about it, maybe even a hitchhike cos it's a busy spot. We really need more bus routes out that way! For halfway here or the other side of Cruagh woods before Tibradden is the next road. Glencullen or Kilternan a bit further on have some buses (you could even finish up with a pint in johnnie foxes) but it's a decent additional climb up through Cruagh woods and Tibbradden if your fitness level is up for it, ours wasn't at that stage, but maybe now it'd be a bit easier :)
thank you! That’s a big help as I’m not familiar with the area. Good to know it’s easily accessible for a lift
Great video, thanks. I've been to Glendalough so many times, but you've made me want to ditch the kids (poor them!) And do the white trail. I've marked it in to my 2024 calendar.
Well done. Great job. Thank you both
Thanks for the positive comment! :)
Hello Ornat, me and my two friends are walking the walkway but going to cork instead. We are bringing a wheelie bin with us as well. If you used any maps apart from the ones provided online by the walkway folk we would be grateful if we could use them. If there’s any way we can talk privately that would be great. Thank you very much, Thomas.
Ah Thomas, I have only seen this now! We've used Hiiker later in our trip as we discovered it and it's pretty good for most of the walk! There's a few spots where it hasn't been updated since it was put up but it's useful 95% of it! It only shows the walking route and not the cycling route though. I'm not sure where you can get maps for the cycling route as that might be best for the wheelie bins! Have you started already?
Heading there on the 25th of March with sb fitness can't wait
Awful music.
We need to drop this "super excited " american shite... Like....
Will edit it out next time! 👌
I agree. More and more young Irish people are sounding American. This couple are a prime example. They both have that silly American twang. They've obviously been brought up watching American TV programmes. Not good.
Really nice intro!
Thanks Damo 😊
Been to Drumshanbo ,and Leitrim many times in 56 years. It still looks the same. I have dear friends who live at the very southern tip of Lough Allen, and I'm treated to to a lovely trout or Salmon dinner when I am a guest there. Thanks for the memory!
It's definitely a wonderful place for a fresh trout straight from the lake!
Thinking of doing this with my daughter in sections. If you park and then walk ie Blacklion to Dowra, how did you get back to your car?
We had 2 cars, parked one either end. The only way really. Other alternative is to have a local taxi (or a friend!) collect you and bring you back. I don't think there's any direct buses, Google seems to give options through either Sligo or Manorhamilton for public transport
@@ornat Thank you
Do you never use am focal slighe no bealach for pathes in Irish like in Scotland in ghaidhlig. Uabhasach breagha, very interesting weel din!
We have names for all of them in both languages, but the ones in the Gaelacht tend to be known by their Irish names, like the Slí Gaelacht Mhuscraí
@@ornat sli sounds very like slighe!
It's a pity you don't name the places you pass through, I feel more research should have been done, I lived in Ballinaglera for 11 year and could have done a better job
@@florencedixon9642 ballina glara what is that interpreted to,showing my ignorance of irish,is it bealach or bal as in settlement ,glera ?
@@florencedixon9642 when you're trying to walk the whole beara breifne way it's hard to research every place you pass through, will leave the more descriptive videos for the local experts who live nearby 😉 the focus of the video is more about the walking experience, the scenery and what to expect on the route. It's a good idea for a video though, I just need to get through editing all the rest of the walks we've done first... It's time consuming 😔
Brave.
John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Couldn’t you have done a little research into the holy wells and sweathouse, for example? Kind of a lazy effort.
Thanks for taking time to give feedback! This video was to share the experience of the walk so if you're looking for a history video this not the right place, we're not experts and don't do a great job here explaining the little we know, we haven't made many videos so don't exactly prepare what we talk about but rather break to talk about the walk. Unfortunately there wasn't much info either on site or online, what I could find is linked below which I found post editing so feel free to check those out if you want to know more!
@@ornatNo one is asking you to do a history video! Just get together a few facts about holy wells and sweat Houses. Not hard to come by.
@@doloresaquines1529 you're right, it just wasn't the focus of the video when out walking that day 😊
Would have liked this better without the music.
Thanks for the feedback, the free music you get for making videos isn't great unfortunately.
Back at my Granny's! Aaaaah brilliant! Thank you Ornat!
Glad you spotted somewhere you recognised!
Ha! That's my grandparent's old house now painted blue behind you at the end there. When I first saw it in the 60s it was white wash, black and red trim. It was a pub and shop. Ballygar had a much more Creggs feel back then... no traffic - just a few odd minis on the road, and tractors, and donkey and cart. I'm surprised the bluebells in Aughrane Forest weren't blooming last April. Maybe a bit too early for them, but there are millions if you catch them. Say hi to Pat at the Coffee Drop if you happen in there again. Thanks for this lovely and unexpected trip back home!
Ballygar is an absolutely fantastic spot!
Been a rambler in England for years. Now in NW Ireland, Enniskillen. Love these videos, great to see there are actual footpaths and rights of way. Inspirational folks
Such an enjoyable video and great promo for Rural Ireland and indeed the HYMANY WAY . Great you enjoyed Ballygar and your are so right Pat Greally is a gentleman and the Coffee Drop is a one stop shop for food and refreshments . Well done and looking forward to the next video .
Who are 6
Another super cool route! Well done! Such a pity that so many stiles are overgrown
It really was a pity, but it's part of the charm of walking on a new way marked trail! As long as it's still passable, we are happy :)
Great stuff as always. Really should have put some trousers on for that overgrown section
Me too!
Just beautiful video.
The extreme flashbacks right at the end to The Sliver Brumby was the last thing I was expecting to remember while watching this, but thank you! 😂😄 - ellie
Let's just say it was a bit of our theme song while walking that day.... A bit mad 😂
"Lovely bit of muck!" 😂but also very much agree, nothing better! And my soles were tingling with imaginary sympathy pain from similar long days 🙈Lovely videos! - ellie
Very grateful for the UA-cam algorithm for recommending this today! Bringing back lots of memories from our walk. And while I feel your pain when walking the wrong trail for 2hrs, at least that route did look really pretty! 😅😆 - ellie
Hahaha! Yeah we were super clueless tbf! Have done much more walking since... 😅 It was super pretty but a lot of work to get back to the right track
some great shots of the area and some lovely music... to bad the walkers come off a little patronising and ill informed about what they are actually encountering.
Thanks for the feedback, definitely didn't mean to come across that way. The main focus was the walking route and there was very little info available as it was for some of the sites we stopped at.
my apologies for being negative, that isn't fair to you. this stretch of the Leitrim way (Ballinagleragh/Dowra) is my neighbourhood so I am a little over sensitive about it... I am woking on ways to increase the information available to walkers of this stretch so they can be made more aware of the rich history between Drumshanbo and Blacklion...
@@iliocht it's a beautiful part of the country, you're lucky to live there! We do joke a bit too much in that Irish way of putting things down, but I've found a way to remove some of that nonsense giddiness we had on the day so hopefully it comes across slightly better. Both Leitrim and Cavan ways are some of the best stretches of the Ireland/Beara breifne way 👌 I've heard there's been loads of work done on the Leitrim way in 2021 so hopefully a lot more walkers will walk it!
@@ornatI am Irish and I certainly Don't "put things down".

Fingers crossed you can make it to Ireland soon enough and travel will become normal again in the very near future! We're all hoping! We're very lucky that Ireland has so much to offer for such a small island!!!! It's made the travel restrictions bearable!
Wow, some fantastic shots and animal encounters here. You really did get out at a good time, there's not a soul around! Really class, Glendalough looking as good as it ever has
Yeah, had the place to ourselves! Definitely a massive difference to going on a weekend...
Hi love your content ive lived here only 5 years we emmigrated from the middlands in uk with my wife and teenage daughter to start a new adventure and sold up and found a preoperty here in ireland we live in leitrim. Keep up the great work you two make a great team bro and sis cant beat it. i have subbed and will be giving shout out to you both on my social media and everywhere else. Ah thanks for the nice comments 😁 nothing like getting outside and appreciating what we have on our own doorstep to take the mind of all the isolation!!! Found a few places we'd never have seen otherwise had it not been for the walking. I like to call it slow tourism!
Great stuff as always

Haha we're brother and sister 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Aonghus now introduces himself as my brother in some videos to avoid confusion! Glad you enjoyed! It's certainly hard not to travel particularly if you have family abroad you can't see, or even family on the other side of the country when we're at stricter levels! I hope you make it back soon!
Come here,is there any yellow arrows like the caminos in spain
Mostly just the yellow walking man waymarker, not quite Camino style! There were a couple fields with plain yellow arrows maybe as temporary waymarkers, also some of the wooded bits have arrows painted on trees to help ☺️
Great job guys, I very nearly took that short cut also but I needed to get shots of the castle. It's strange, I felt very drained doing that section, must be some weird magic in those woods 😁.
Do you have any social media channels I can follow so I can help promote you?
Not at the moment, just making the videos for the joy of the walking, learning how to put together the videos, and sharing the experience of walking for now :) Might up the game a bit for the 2021 season, but sure we'll see! Haven't gotten out for a decent walk since we finished up in Portumna :( well, I haven't, apart from some local Dublin walks. Aonghus has had some decent walks since out in the west!
For how we were feeling at that point in time and dying to set up camp and rest, it was definitely the right decision for us, but I do feel like we missed out in the castle! 😞 At the time, we said we'd drive back to it when we finished our walk, but we never did! 😓
@@ornat well you didn't miss that much to be honest. I stood at that crossroads for maybe 5 minutes debating the short cut or not. Ah no worries I'll share a pic of the video on my insta anyways.
we both follow you in instagram 🤓 - @0rnat and @aillillaonghusetc (actually, just checked, Aonghus doesn't really use instagram 😜 )
Lovely relaxed account of the trail. If only I was 30 years younger, would give it a try! You are brave to take on the wild camping. Definitely very helpful.
Loved this. Must try it sometime. Keep up the good work!
Go for it! it's a great walk! Just remember the waterproof footwear!
Another great video. Must do the other half of this walk sometime!
Yeah, the suck valley way was really lovely! Get back to the friendly villages post-pandemic!
Good to see changes to the trail and I'm very happy to see that dangerous road section has been cut out. Really lovely job.
I think some of the trails are getting great improvements year on year as the popularity of the Beara Breifne way grows, definitely a few changes since you did it yourself, but that bog outside Ballaghaderreen and the glove on the stick was still there, took a shot just for the craic! Thanks for the inspiration to get the walking done! Appreciate how much work goes into the editing after doing a few videos myself... 2 more yet to finish from last year (we made it as far as Portumna), but finding the time to edit is the hardest part!
@@ornat Yeah, it's some undertaking and getting the time can be a killer and frustrating but take your time with it. It took me a very long time to get all the video's edited because life gets in the way and this is not your full-time job. The effort and time the people of the BBW put into it are amazing. I know I got annoyed now and again but I was tired and cranky, ha! The BBW has the makings of something very special and it's getting there.
Well done, you two!
Thanks Ciara!
Thanks Ciara!!
Nice job. 👍👌👏
Thanks 😁
Your best work yet Orno, absolutely love this
Glad you like it, now on to the next one!
A courageous undertaking, which you obviously enjoyed. Great ideas and tips on advantages and disadvantages. Very informative for those of us planning staycations. Gave a preview of some of the flora and fauna. Definitely showed the need for waterproof boots and clothing. Good comment on the need for water and availability. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure.
I recommend doing this walk with your sister
Sure it's a great walk to do with anyone!
Thanks for the views guys! Exciting stuff
Fair play folks! I'm impressed with the quality of your videos, what camera did you use?
Thanks! Using the Canon G7X mark ii, handy to stick away in a pocket when it's raining, just not the best sound quality when it's super windy but use a skinny micro muff with it when outside :) got a scratch on the lens during one of the hikes but it still seems to be working for the most part!
