    • @omarthehippo

      2023 was pretty chilly, it was in the 30s for most of the race. Personally I enjoyed it and found it perfect once I started moving. But it was also beautiful weather (sunny and clear) which is not always a guarantee for late November in Seattle...

    Hi there. I enjoy your videos. Can I ask a few tech questions? You show that you use a 5,000 mAH external battery. Do you have much battery life when you finish? I'm closer to 4 1/2 hours... Does your Gopro heat up. I read a lot of stuff concerning this problem.

    • @omarthehippo
      @omarthehippo 16 днів тому

      I've used both a 10,000 mAh and a 5,000 mAh. You can get both in pretty compact sizes now (I zip tie it below the camera in the chest mount and use a SUPER short USB cable, plus a battery door on the camera with a USB plug hole). I estimate the 5,000 mAh lasts about 4 hours on Timewarp or video. I think it would swap to the internal battery once the external drains which would give another 1.5 hours, but I've never tested it. Also never had any issues with heat even when the temps were high 80s. As long as you're moving the breeze will be enough-they'll usually only overheat if stationary

    Nice! I’m running Seattle marathon this year. How tough are the hills?

    • @omarthehippo
      @omarthehippo Місяць тому

      I didn't mind them! I have long legs and enjoy powering up a hill as long as it's a steady incline. I think the halfway point was "the hill" you'll hear about most (essentially from 0 to 300ft) but it's a pretty stable grade over 1 mile. I disliked running DOWN it at the end more than I disliked running up it in the middle. My training runs also helped. Garmin says Seattle was a 1250ft total ascent, and my 22 mile trainer was 1100ft. If you train on complete flat it might be more difficult...

      @@omarthehippo appreciate it! I live in Louisiana & we have no real hills here. Im gonna have to do hill repeats up a bridge or something 😂 I’m excited for Seattle though, it will be my 1st marathon. I subscribed to your channel, keep crushing it!

    • @omarthehippo
      @omarthehippo 3 місяці тому

      This is using the Timewarp feature at 15x. At 4K it takes up ~8GB Timewarp essentially takes a stabilized video and then generates a timelapse from that, so it eats the same battery as video would. On the Hero11 I'd estimate that means ~1.5 hours with the stock battery. I run with an external battery pack (5,000mAh) which lasts the full marathon. You'll need a battery door with a hole for the USB cable if you do this

    I am considering this race for next year...as a flat lander who lives in one of the hottest, most humid climates in the US, do you or anyone else have tips/considerations for doing a race at this altitude (with consideration of the downhill)? I do have levees near me that i utilize as my hill work but just curious if anyone else has done this race coming from sea level and a very hot/humid climate?

    • @omarthehippo
      @omarthehippo 3 місяці тому

      I didn't notice anything regarding the altitude, but you will definitely feel the downhill, and there can be pretty dramatic temperature swings (40s at the start, 80s at the finish). It's a very weird race compared to any I'd done before. I think regular marathon training load will be just fine to finish (even run on flat), but if you want a PB then definitely dedicate a day each week specifically to hills, and mix in exercises that focus on quads too. I'd done a marathon 4 weeks prior and was only running to finish, so personally I just slowed down and dialed back as my quads tightened and the temp jumped

      Ran it in 2019, and again (with you) on Saturday. If you've trained hills, the first 8 miles are pretty decent. They changed the course at mile 21 there was a nasty hill (it stole my soul in 19) that you had to go over twice at the loop in Shelby Park entrance. If you've been doing flat runs, like I was in 19, take it easy. The heat is supposed to be near 80 with winds from the south to add to the misery.

    • @omarthehippo
      @omarthehippo 4 місяці тому

      It felt pretty good to me-I would describe the course as pretty flat. But my long runs were done on paths with lots of little ups and downs (20 miles, 1000ft ascend). If you're used to completely flat you might feel it a bit more. The elevation plot from my watch in the video was 958ft total ascend

    This is awesome! I'm running it this year. May I ask some questions? 1. At 6:23 I noticed you merge with what looks like the half marathon - was traffic pretty bad? 2. From what I saw on the 2024 course map, there are some hills on Miles 16 and 19 - how were they? 3. Other than the baseball field (really cool!), it's mainly pavement and concrete?

    • @omarthehippo
      @omarthehippo 6 місяців тому

      Good luck! Hope the weather this year is as good as last year, great conditions and a really enjoyable run. 1. Merge wasn't too bad, I had to zig zag a bit more but there was space and they split back off pretty quick. 2. Hills weren't bad at all. My Garmin says the hilliest part was actually the beginning. I've had memorable hills before in marathons but none in this one. I remember it feeling much flatter than the elevation plot shows. 3. All pavement/concrete! No complaints at all about the surface, great for running.

      Chest mounted GoPro. I run it on external power using a small external battery (5000mAh) zip tied to my chest mount. Battery door on the GoPro with charging port hole with a very short USB C cable (4 inches). I use Timewarp on the GoPro (15x) which does all the stabilization and timelapse for you. Just click and go. There's still a lot of lens settings to tweak to try and improve (MCM I used the linear lens instead of the wider one) but I enjoy having the digital momentos from a race, flaws and all.
