Cape Wrath Trail - April 2024 - Day 13 of 13 - Badcall to Cape Wrath Lighthouse
In April 2024 I hiked the Cape Wrath Trail from Fort William to the Cape Wrath Lighthouse in 13 days, following the Cicerone Guide’s main route all the way to Cape Wrath.
It was an epic adventure filled with stunning mountain scenery, breathtaking views, isolated wilderness and some really challenging terrain.
Along the way I met some fantastic fellow hikers, I got the chance to sleep in Bothies and wild camp in some pretty awesome places.
The weather was mostly dry for the trip, but there were a number of nights with sub zero temperatures and some days with significant wind chill.
This was the hardest physical and mental challenge I have undertaken, but it was also the most rewarding experience I’ve had in the mountains, a true adventure through a beautiful part of Scotland.
This video is Day 13 on my CWT adventure - Badcall to Cape Wrath Lighthouse ~ 27km / 16.8mi - 670m ascent - 29.4.24.

    Hi Andrew, Thanks for your heads up about the shoes. Really appreciate it, and thanks a lot for your footage. I watched them along with the map for preparation. I will take more days, however. If you don't mind, I have two questions. How did you get back from the cape, and would you mind commenting on a thought about boots or shoes? About the last question, there is a lot of talk and advice about this. I have never walked on barefoot, so I am thinking about boots or low hiking shoes like Salomon or Hoka. Now, as you told, feet will get wet anyway, boots or shoes probably alike. What are your thoughts about boots or shoes?

    • @andrew_hikes
      @andrew_hikes 8 днів тому

      Hi Ed, I think shoes vs boots is down to personal preference. The terrain is very uneven and it would be good to get as many practice walks done on uneven ground to strengthen ankles and knees. Salomon or Hoka are decent choices. I’m hoping this link is accurate but it looks like Altra Lone Peaks will be getting a vibram mega grip sole next year which should be better for me at least, we’ll see… sportbiz.ch/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Altra_Running_Web_Workbook_SS25.pdf

    Hi Andrew, Great footage, also for preparation for my intended hike next year. One question, what type of shoes did you use, and how was the experience? Thanks, Ed.

    • @andrew_hikes
      @andrew_hikes 13 днів тому

      Hi Ed, thanks and good luck for your CWT attempt! I wore Vivobarefoot Tracker Forest Esc boots. I have arthritis in both my big toe joints and need both the width and height in the toe box. I usually like to wear Altra Lone Peaks for most hikes but I knew their poor grip in the wet would make them unsuitable in the wet conditions in the Highlands. My search for a wide toe, box zero drop trail shoe with a vibram sole and decent lugs has been unsuccessful so far… The Tracker Forest Esc’s grip on wet grass, rocks and boggy ground is excellent. They’re light and comfortable too. My only word of warning is that they have nearly no cushioning and long days on trail meant tired feet. They wetted out from day 2 onwards but so did the footwear of every other hiker I met. They dry reasonably quickly though. I had some manageable heel blisters and lost a couple of toe nails. I think this is more to do with walking in such wet conditions over very rough ground at a decent pace. They’re still the best option for me and my feet and I’d wear them again next time… Atb, Andrew

    Thank you Andrew, enjoyable and informative video's. I started the CWT this year from FTW on the 2nd May and generally had good weather. As there was firing at the Cape I didn't go beyond Sandwood Bay so may have another go next year. April looked a fair bit cooler than my May trip, what date in April did you start and how did you Durston tent perform?

    • @andrew_hikes
      @andrew_hikes 18 днів тому

      Hi, thanks for watching! I started on 17th April. The cold was an issue with overnight temps dipping below freezing a few times, my Rab Neutrino Pro 400 sleeping bag was light to carry but just not warm enough for me even with a Nalgene bottle filled with hot water. Most of my hike was dry though so I feel very lucky to have missed the wet weather the week before I started. I think I’ll start in early May next time. I am very happy with my Xmid Solid 1p tent, it’s lightweight, spacious inside and very compact when packed. Good luck for your CWT attempt next year. Atb, Andrew

    • @andrew_hikes
      @andrew_hikes 3 місяці тому

      Hi Steve, I personally think that Sandwood Bay would make an excellent alternative end point but equally the remoteness and the effort needed to finish that final stretch to the Cape seems quite appropriate given what you’ve tackled upto that point. You have to work hard for the views on this trail! The effort Sandy went to walk a 21mile round trip every week to collect his pension and supplies is just mind boggling. Atb, Andrew.

      Hi Craig, thank you for watching, I originally planned to walk back to Kinlochbervie but the day after staying at the Cape in the Bunkhouse we managed to get to Durness quite quickly. If I had to walk I think I would have chosen the track walk to the Kyle of Durness instead of the walk back over the rough ground to Sandwood Bay. • @andrew_hikes
      @andrew_hikes 3 місяці тому

      Hi Phil, thanks very much for watching and your kind words! Yes, I carried 4 days of food at the start, picked up another 4 days of food at Kintail Crafts and then 3 more days at the Inchnadamph Explorer Lodge (they’re happy to hold a parcel for guests staying with them). My planned schedule extended by a couple of days as I hit the reality of the trail - this is the roughest ground I’ve hiked over - so I topped up with snacks and food at Kintail Crafts, Kinlochewe Service Station and the Inchnadamph Explore Lodge. A fellow hiker I walked with at the beginning managed to resupply entirely along the way. Kintail crafts has a range of dehydrated meals, pasta, noodles and oats, as did both the Kinlochewe Service Station and the Inchnadamph Explore Lodge. There’s also the option to divert to Ullapool and a Spar shop at Kinlochbervie. Hope you have a great trip when you get it all planned out. Atb, Andrew

      Thanks Dan for watching, really glad you enjoyed this mini series! I had originally planned to return to camp at Sandwood Bay after getting to the Cape, but the stretch from Sandwood Bay to the Cape was so unrelentingly rough that I called it a day and stayed at the Bunkhouse at the Cape. 4 more hikers arrived a few hours after me and I had a great evening listening to all their stories from their thru hikes. We were really fortunate to be helped out by the kindness of strangers the next day and managed to get to Durness rapidly. I’ll leave it at that as I don’t want to give the impression it’s something to be relied upon. If I had to walk out I think I would have opted for the track to the Kyle of Durness and the 8km walk around the Kyle to the road to Durness. Atb, Andrew

    Hi Andrew, another beautiful leg of the trail, just so remote. I do like remoteness when I’m walking, so I’d be in my element on the Cape Wrath. Such a shame you’re getting towards the end. 🙁 All the best Dave 😀⛰🥾🏕️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Hi Dave, this section was great and the views from Ben Dreavie were just awesome. Somehow the mountains, lochs and the sea all combined perfectly and then a rainbow appeared to top it all! The cape was calling at the end of the day. Atb, Andrew

    Glencoul bothy brings back memories, always our chillout weekend after a week on the hill. Willie Watson,s tourist boat from Kylesku dropped us off, swapping brown trout for fags on the way back!

      Thanks! I was glad the weather held out on the ascent to the bealach by Beinn Uidhe. It was rough walking from Glen Coul onwards in the rain. The Bothy was great and so much the better sitting by a fire in the evening thanks to one of the estate workers turning up with a pile of logs! 🔥 Atb, Andrew

    Superb Andrew, I see the alternative path takes you via Gorm Loch Mor to join with your chosen route eventually. Look,s a hard slog and no accommodation of course. Unless you count Glencoul bothy but that,s a super long day.

      Hi Steve, thanks very much. I think Darren Curtis took that route on his Day 10 and it looked like a hard slog, especially as he was unlucky with the weather! Atb, Andrew

      @@andrew_hikes Hi Andrew, looking forward to seeing the rest of the journey. Have you done the coast to coast, that might be an idea? I completed the Cumbria Way the other week and will be doing the West Highland Way next May so I’m going to check your videos out on that. I’m already in planning mode, haha I don’t know if you know but I also have a channel, it’s nothing special, but you might want to chance it out. Cheers Dave 😀⛰🥾🏕️

    Love your filming style and calm presentation. The paths around the Falls of Glomach look very narrow indeed - probably very treacherous in wind and rain. Do they look worse in the video or in real life?

    • @andrew_hikes
      @andrew_hikes 4 місяці тому

      Hi Ed, thank you! I’m not a confident scrambler or expert on narrow ridges. The path from the Falls of Glomach is narrow and I did feel the exposure, mostly because of the steepness of the hillside. There are two rocky down steps on the second section of the path that just need a little care, these were okay to navigate for me by hugging the left side of the path and placing my hands in the rocks to steady myself. I think the wide angled lens on my Go Pro does exaggerate the steepness a little. Atb, Andrew

    • @edwesterdale-music
      @edwesterdale-music 4 місяці тому

      @@andrew_hikes The rocky steps didn't look too bad but the path, e.g. around 6:41 looks quite "bold". As you say, it may be the wide angle lens. I should be hiking around that area this time next year so it's really informative. I think your videos are about the most informative I've seen about the CWT so far. It takes a long time to edit videos so thank you for posting.

      Hi Peter, I found a tick crawling on my hand around day 4 after I rested my poles on the ground, then nothing until the end of Day 12 and my campsite spot just above Badcall. I had one tick bite which I found on the day I arrived home, but all seems well so far. Atb, Andrew

    Andrew. Thanks for your video series, Having completed Ft Wm to Shiel Bridge last year with two friends, we will be tackling Shiel Bridge to Ullapool starting 1 June. Your videos show much more really helpful detail of the terrain than others, and your factual descriptions and advice, whilst not so entertaining are much more valuable. Days 6 - 8 are just what we need. Thank you.
