I've seen a video of a pretty alternative technique to take care of root mealys and it was the only thing that worked for this person They did a hot mix of horticultural soap and and cigar. Overnight once water was cool added some Isopropyl alcohol... I believe they either soaked it few times with days I bettween or cleared the plant of soil and soaked for a minute or something.. Actually if ur interested in having this in your tool kit like I. I'll send u the video :)

I bet interchanging with ac vinegar could have done the job too. Or dish soap

Mealybugs definitely suck lol. Really the only thing that can deal with them is a systemic pesticide, something the plant can take up and will be toxic to anything that feeds on it. Hopefully your Thelocactus will be ok. Thank you for sharing with us, Henry. Have a wonderful day and week from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🏜👍🏻

Thanks for watching and commenting Daz, I might get my hands on some systemic pesticides to keep the critters under control, my only concern is that they would poison the bees feeding on the flowers so I'll look in to it. Wishing you and Edith a fantastic month! 🌵🌸☀️😊

Beautiful little seedlings, growing so well after a year, a good size. They look great potted up, and your favourite one does indeed look great! Totally get where you're coming from with the Mealy Bugs attack... I've had a battle with them this year, more than ever before!! Every single day us being spent looking at each cactus and checking, re-checking, spraying again and again, using homemade and off the shelf products to keep them at bay as best as possible. They are relentless it seems, I know how sad it is when they can devour our special cactus, especially ones we've had for some time, you're not alone, it's happened to me this year and I was 😡 but you do get through it eventually! Great video and wish you success going forward with your seedlings, and I love Astrophytum too! 😀👍🏻🌵

So happy to see you are back Henry :-D your Astro asterias seedlings are absolutely GORGEOUS :-D and they look so wonderful all re potted, argh yes I can 100% understand the frustration with Mealy bugs, they drive me absolutely nuts, I think we can never be 100% rid of them but out of all the things I have used the Neem oil seems to do the best at keeping them under control, the problem is with this heatwave Neem can't be used until it cools down a lot, but I have been sprinkling Diatomaceous Earth on the plant tables and it seems to be working very well so far at keeping the Beasts at a controllable level, thanks so much for sharing the repotting with us Henry, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast for a wonderful new week XXXX <3

I live in the south of Spain and I've had my two oldest Lophophora for 11 years - from the size of the plants I've grown from their seed, I'm guessing they were a good 4-5 years old when I got them. We get up to 40 plus degrees in summer and down to a couple of degrees below zero in winter and they stay on the outside windowsills all year. They're potted in a pretty ordinary cactus mix with chips of local dolomite limestone added and top dressed with the limestone for the oldest plants and baked clay pellets for the others. Our tap water has a high calcium content and that's what I use - I've never lost a single plant including the second generation from seed which are now about 7-8 years old and flowering regularly. I had an infestation of root mealybug a while back so I unpotted the affected plants, washed the tap roots carefully and treated them with a cinnamon bath and they're all fine now. Truly wonderful plants!!

The matter with the distilled water is more complex. It is not directly harmful because it is going through the soil first, an thus mineralizing itself in the process. The "problem" is that plants themselfs acidify the soil they are in over time. In the ground, this is balanced out by the surrounding soil, in pots it is either done with adding lime or simply tap-water that contains some lime. If you only use soft or distilled water, the acidification is unaltered. BUT: Your plants may actually prefer acidic soil, so it is not even a problem at all times...

My experience is clay pots are best as they dry quicker than plastic. Helps prevent rot from overwatering. (I love to water plants) As with the original video, very good information. In our area tap water is full of chlorine all year long. If you let the water sit for 24 hours the chlorine evaporates. The other problem is in the winter and more so spring when the road salt is running from the roads inot the water supply. It increases the salinity of tap water and that can't be removed. Some plants are sensitive to this but I have no idea if lophophoras is or isn't. I do use un-boiled rain water and have had no problem. Boiling it won't cause a problem. Thumbs up.
