Dorothy Chang Streams (2005) for solo viola
Dorothy Chang Streams (2005) for solo viola
Written in three short movements, Streams features a number of musical ideas that
reappear in various forms throughout the work. The development of the material is loosely
structured, unfolding freely in a stream-of-consciousness flow of musical gestures that connect,
leap to other ideas, or circle back on themselves. Small fragments and motives are recycled and
reinterpreted, moving from an aggressive and declamatory opening movement entitled “with
fury,” to a childlike introspective second movement called “diffused,” and closing with a fast,
light scherzo entitled “breathless.” In a recent working session with the composer on the last
movement, I was instructed to imitate a “broken Zoom call”-an aesthetic that we have all felt
acquainted with in the midst of the pandemic.

Very beautiful rendition. I love the dark and profound colour of the viola sound, but I would like to ask you a question: were these transcription and executions practiced even historically? At the time of Biber? I'm asking because there is something bizzarre in respecting the baroque sound (no vibrato, reduced dynamics) if we arrange the piece for another instrument. I found also very appropriate the colour of your dress, that in italian language is "viola".

I first heard these , yesterday, in a rehearsal at Kneisel Hall, in Blue Hill , Maine. What took so long for me to hear these? I am 82!!!! I should have heard them years ago!!! I wish I had the $$$ to go to the Friday concert and Sunday concert to hear it again. Sigh. The two performersJesse Mills and Brian Hong were so in tune with each other. It was a true conversation.

@@Msgrenouille7yes, it is the first time I heard it... I wrote a piece for solo Viola many years ago but no one played it yet (I used to be a professional clarinet player). One Viola player looked at the notes once and told me it seemed too difficult (it contains a fugue). I wonder if I will ever hear it performed...

Takemitsu consistently created music that spoke wonders with totally new Harmonie and lines. Confrontation of a high order somehow lacking the shrill violence of most contemporary Europeans ,of course he has his own wildness and violence but everything feels natural in his work!

Magnifique!
