The only pruning saw you'll ever need...
Very informative, thank you.
Thank you.
Hello. Nice video! How deep is possible cut? Thank you
Hi Franek, the sawblade is 63mm high. After cutting to a depth of 63mm you have to use the established kerf to cut deeper, free hand.
Can these drill steel? Nice video by the way mate!
Sorry, but no, these don't drill steel. Thanks for watching.
The biggest downside to watching this video demonstration is that you are using the rasps incorrectly. When you shave the wood against the wood grain, even Jarrah, the fibers of the wood tend to tear out, thus increasing the possibility that the wood becomes less usable for most if not all projects. While I understand that you are simply using these rasps to see how much wood you can shave off, it serves no purpose as most woodworkers would NOT use a rasp this way to remove wood as demonstrated; again even if it is a dense wood with tight fibers. I think it would have been a better demo of the various rasps of this type and how much wood each removes by simply demonstrating the proper way to use each one. In doing so, you would have still made your point of comparing how much wood is removed by each rasp. To further demonstrate my point, imagine the project is simply to round over the sides or corners of a wooden cutting board; one great purpose for using a rasp. If you were to use the rasp incorrectly as you have done in this video, and the wood tore or ripped away wood fibers when you rasp against the grain, because of the tearing out of the wood fibers, the woodworker would then have to resaw the board on the side where the wood fibers tore out in order to eliminate the now unevenness and/or pitting of the project.
where do i get that awesome handle for the shinto handle
Hello, the handle you see in this video is the old wooden style handle. The new stock has a polymer handle. The old handle is much nicer, I agree.
Excellent, just the info I was after, expect an order real soon! 😊
Thank you Ross!
Thanks, brother Ebonista.
You're welcome brother! Thanks for watching
Thank you Sir 🎉
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
This is a great video. I'm a professional carpenter. I own a large dual compound slider as well as the 7 1/4" version, which now gets used 95 percent of the time . For years I've kept a stanley 150 miter box on my truck . It's great for going room to room doing shoe moldings in homes where power saws cannot enter.. I just bought an old stanley no 358 miter box. I'm trying to incorporate that to further cancel my big saw. With the crown stops that came with it I can cut compound angles. The saw will also swing all the way to 60 degrees. I know it'll never be able to cut giant crown like a 12" saw, but I rarely do that.... i think vintage hand tools are way cooler than big miter saws and even modern things like the topic of this video are way cooler.
Thanks for your comment Tim. Yeah, this comes in handy for cutting mouldings on site. Beats carrying a compound slider from room to room. Bit slower of course but just as accurate.
@@ebonisto plus, on some jobs they won't allow power saws in the house if you're in the final stages of completion. So you'd have to set up outside and walk back and forth, which makes hand saws much faster.
@timbarry5080 I agree, saves time compared to walking back and forth to wherever your compound saw is on site.
That thing is cool
I'm very impress with these bits. Also glad they make 'em in 1/4 hex shank.
I love mine, I just wish they had a longer version, when I use their stops they are useless depending on the depth i wanna drill which anything above 30mm you need another set of drill bit to finish it off.
Hi, yes, they could do with being longer. Fischer have some Brad Point bits that are longer but not sure how well they cut.
How do you sharpen these?
Hi the ceramic ones can't be sharpened. The steel ones are sharpened by running the chamfered faces of the trimmer over a sharpening stone. The steel ones are easily resharpened.
Thank you for that comparison, I think that it confirms my decision to order the Shinto - I'll be using it for the initial preparation for hiking sticks; that'd involve bark stripping and some reshaping. It looked better for the job instead of a spoke shave or a draw knife. We'll see!
Hi, thank you for watching. The Shinto is an awesome tool! I hope the bark stripping is going well.
I've recommended the Shinto saw rasp to quite a few people. Genuinely good. I first encountered it in a luthiery video on carving guitar necks from Crimson Guitars, but find it really useful for general home woodworking.
Hi Thank you! Yes, the Shinto comes in handy on a lot of woodworking projects.
Where to purchase from india
Hello these are available here - www.ebonisto.com.au/hand-saws
Woah, never heard of this jig! Amazing! 😳✨✨ Will def save time on correcting my crooked endgrains/handcuts on the shooting board! That parallel/rip feature is very nice too! It’s like a table saw and miter saw in one! (Both of which I don’t have) Btw: could this be used as a dovetail guide/jig too? ie: Can it rest on top of the endgrain while board is in a vise? (endgrain pointing up)
Hello, you can use it to cut dovetails if you have enough surface to rest it on. I would clamp a sacrificial piece of wood level with the endgrain where you cut the dovetail and cut through both pieces. Better still a piece either side. This will give you a smoother cut as well. Bit fiddly though.
@@ebonisto Thanks! Sacrificials is a great idea! Just saw these old vids about making a simple wood jig for a similar saw guide. ua-cam.com/video/P3DUTzGqFb4/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/fn9aogREvYk/v-deo.html Such versatility - compound miter, rip/table saw, as well as dovetails/tenons!
Next time you do tests keep the playing field the same. On the surface radius test, you used the western rasp quickly on one side. Then you used two different shintos on the other side and said it makes a smoother surface
Will bear it in mind, cheers.
Perfect video. Looking forward to making a frame for some artwork now!
Thank you!
Great instructional video. Well done !
I bought some IKEA containers with bamboo lids to use for a project. I needed to drill a bunch of holes in the lids and my plan was to start with a 1mm brad bit and work my way up, gradually enlarging the holes till I got to about 5-6mm - to avoid chip out. FAIL! Chip out everywhere, no matter how careful I was. I tried using tape as well, but that didn't help. I tried drilling from alternate sides, but that didn't help either. And to top it off I lost the 1mm and 1.5mm bits, jammed into the bamboo so effectively that I ended up having to abandon them. Time to start accumulating some Star_M.
Hey Ray, Sounds like you got yourself in a bit of bother with that bamboo from IKEA. You'll be right with a 5 or 6mm bamboo drill. Punch through in one hit! Good luck with your project.
I just found your video. Thank you for presenting this tool! I need to drill through 10cm of construction timber in a 90° angle. I am no bloody diy-newby😅 but I am not confident that I could do this freehand straight. This tool seems to be what I was looking for. Do you have any experience in drilling construction timber with this drill guide? I have a solid Makita without impact and good „chuck-concentricity“, 2,5k rpm and good japanese wood drills. Thank you! And sorry for my bad english😅
Hello, I've had to drill through fenceposts which were about 90mm x 90mm with no problem, should be ok with 100mm timber. Drilling dead plumb is difficult even with a lot of experience. There is nothing wrong with your English by the way. Thanks for watching.
@@ebonisto Thank you very much for your answer. It helps me deciding. I subscribed and send regards from the other side of the planet :)

Perfectly presented 😊 you have another subscriber
Thank you Mark, welcome to the channel.
I have had the saw guide for a few years now. This is the best instructional video I have seen on it’s use. I would recommend this video to anyone thinking of buying the saw guide or anyone already using one.
Thanks a lot Neil! Glad to hear that you like the video. We do try our best.
Hello, could you do the same for chisels ?
Hello, We probably will do a video about Japanese chisels not too far I'm the future.
😮😮😮😊😊😊good
Thank you!
your video good 👍👍👍
Thank you!
I bought a few from fine tools in Berlin Germany to round the order up. There amazing drill bits. Bought more since 👍😊
Great to hear! They are pretty amazing.
@@ebonistoI’m very impressed with everything that star m I have bought. Great reviews here thank you.
What is datum blade and where can one find it? (I have same idea what it is, but have never seen it)
Hello, There datum blade is a piece of metal that is the same thickness and length as the saw blade without the teeth. It comes as part of the package with the saw guide. You use it to line up the saw guide to a marked line, especially when you need to do long cuts on a board. You then use the saw to cut on the line which you aligned using the datum blade. Hope this helps.

Is there another term for the hardwood saw at 3:06? I can't find anything like it here in the US
Hello, try 'Hardwood 250' as your search term. We sell these on our website and ship to US. www.ebonisto.com.au.
Very interesting tool. Can you comment on the process for sharpening the hss blades. I am presuming that the centre drill bit can be removed for sharpening or replacement?
Hello, the blades and centre drill are usually replaced with new ones when they have worn out.
Hi, i would like to buy this trimmer for trimming abs edging on my funiture project. Which size should i buy? Btw my abs edinging is 1mm thick.
Hello, you should get no. 4953 ceramic edge trimmer with the 1mm chamfer.
possible to sharpen them? by sending off or diy? i’d buy them and abandon my jennings if i can maintain them. the close spacing is amazing.
Hello, unfortunately these cannot be resharpened as they have a special coating which is part of the reason why the drills perform so well. Obviously, sharpening would remove this coating and the drill wouldn't function to its optimum capability.
@@ebonisto okay, let’s advance this, what about sending back for reconditioning? I’m assuming coating is trade secret.
@Justinlorimerdotcom Hello, unfortunately Star M doesn't have a resharpening service, so you can't send them off for resharpening.
is it an upgraded better version from Star-M 50A Drill Stand? seems like it do pretty much the same
Hello, Yes, it is a larger all metal version of the S50A.
So what’s the difference between these and a regular brad point bit?
Hello Paul, Even though these are similar to Brad Point drills they cut way more efficiently. These have a special coating which mitigates against the heat generated during the cut. They also have a few more cutting edges than a Brad point drill. The point on these is very small compared to a Brad Point drill which means less chance of the point going through when you are cutting a stopped hole on thin material. The spiral flutes are also cutting edges and leave a beautiful surface in the drilled hole. They cut clean, fine holes in leather for example as well as on PVC, ABS and other types of plastic as well. These are top quality bits that are made in Japan unlike most drills you get these days. I guess you have to try it for yourself to really be convinced. They cost between $17AUD to about $30AUD per bit and we ship worldwide. All the best and thanks for watching.
Looks great!
Thanks for watching!
how are these different from the wood owl & star-m bits?
Hello, these are Star-M No.601 bamboo drill bits.
Price 350$, is it worth it? Also how to drill a hole let’s say not in the middle but 1/3 from the edge?
Hello, when working close to the edge, I usually use a scrap piece of wood that is the same thickness as the workpiece and let the part of the drill stand that is overhanging rest on the scrap piece. This keeps the drill stand perfectly even without tipping over the edge. This is a very nicely engineered tool that is made in Japan and is very solidly built with all metal construction. I think it's well worth the price. There are cheaper versions available, but these tend to be smaller and have a lot of plastic components.
Would have liked to see these on the endgrain
Yep, we realise that we've missed showing how it goes on endgrain. We'll possibly do an edit to show this later.
