I played trumpet for 10 years before going to college for music. A year into my degree, I realized, while I could read music, hear and identify intervals and triads reliably, and could pull middle-C out of thin air, I didn't have what it takes to really comprehend music theory. I will always admire people who can work like this. Extremely impressive.
