Building a Lost In Space Diorama

A regular model or miniature figure can really be enhanced by creating a diorama using it. The dioramas that I've built are inspired by scenes from the 1960s TV series Lost in Space. In this tutorial I'll take you through the steps that I use to create some of mine and perhaps you can apply them to build one of your own.

Lost in Space campfire diorama

There Were Giants In The Earth was such a great Lost in Space episode that it provided me inspiration to create several dioramas from it and even full size sets. I think the campfire scene by the chariot in this diorama represents everything that Lost in Space is about. Within the circle of light and warmth provided by the campfire the family is all together safe and sound from the ever present...

Thank you for posting this video.. Someday I will have to convert my radio controlled Blizzard Snow Cat model into the Chariot…
That's the model that I used for my chariot. It turned out to be 1/10th scale.
Awesome!!!
Hey Bill, we miss your posts. Anything up any time soon?
I've been working on the next episode, While The Cat's Away, which takes place on a space station. I still have to film one more scene, then finish editing it and I'll post a trailer of it.
@@williamhedges1519 Oh that's terrific sir. It would be a great if it was in time for Christmas--lol!!!
Love the tour of the studio, Bill. Tons better than the crappy tour of Universal Studios!
Thanks, A walking tour is always better than a tram tour. That's why I liked the Paramount, and Warner tour better since you got to walk around the sets.
How much would you charge me for for a 4 foot Jupiter 2 I want one 👀
I bought mine years ago as a kit which isn't available anymore. However there are files available to 3D print your own now.
Wow Bill, what a great collection! You went too fast, though. Guess I need to learn more about where you are and if it's available to the public. I'd love to see it and hear about it from you.
Thanks, I do have a more recent collection video that shows a little more. ua-cam.com/video/MtMy55XCORQ/v-deo.html The studio where this is located is in eastern Nebraska, Cosmic Films Studio, and although it's not a public museum, visitors are welcome , I like to meet other LIS fans.
Very impressive work. I can't say that I recognize every scene, I only ever saw each episode once and it was a number of years ago, but I definitely remember a lot of the desert locales, the groovy colored costumes, and then the pitch black voids for a number of interiors to lairs for villains of the week. The show was definitely made on a budget, but there is some charm in that, and being that it was made for televisions whose screens were only so big and not always showing the best picture quality, things needed to be bold, contrasting, and easy to differentiate, so while the budget wasn't terribly large, it was used efficiently. Your dioramas certainly capture the spirit of the show.
Thanks, They certainly had some interesting sets and characters on the show that make for great dioramas.
Fantastic!
Hi William i watched your movie , and i wanted to thank you. I wanted to thank you because it gave me that feeling that eventually im going to shoot my own movie . Bit of history > In 2005 got interested in film , started working as best boy , and in 2007 passed exams started studying cinematography. At that time i came up with final form if my own movie. But always was thinking too early ,im not good enough etc. Unfortunately quitted college to early coz was working at various commercials , music videos , was very busy , young, and on top was making good money. Most of my life i worked as gaffer , second unit d.p. and after about 10 years i forgot about my initial wish , why i everything started , forgot that initially i wanted to make my own film. 2010s i worked less and less , lost contacts , and moved to totally different kind of work. But after watching your film this initial certainty came back, that i will shoot my own sort of film even only my and my cat will watch in the end. Best wishes William. Serge.
Although I was always a hobbyist filmmaker since high school starting out with Super 8, it wasn't until I retired from the post office that I started to make the kind of films that I really wanted to make and I created a little studio to realize my decades old dream. I still make my films as a hobby and I really make them mainly for me since these are the types of films that I always wanted to see, and if others like them as well, that's just a bonus. Starting out I didn't even think I could get other actors to be in my movies so that's why I used my cat. However I've been lucky to have met other filmmaker friends along the way who like going along on my ride. I just enjoy the entire creative process from writing to editing. Good luck with your films, it's never too late to start on them and follow your dreams.
Nice job on the sky - the Hyades star cluster right on the horizon looked right.
Thanks, I used actual photos of the night sky and tracked them to the ground.
Best one yet.
Love it!
Ahhh...the great outer space adventures of Will and Penny has finally returned. This was a great story. I hope to see more adventures soon. You've become quite an accomplished actor Will. Oh and Penny too.
Thanks, we're working on a new one, While The Cat's Away, where they return to space and add a robot to the crew.
@@williamhedges1519 Awesome! We can't wait.
Bill, great to see you again
Wake up babe! New Will and Penny just dropped!
Amazing as always
Like the moral of the story, thanks! 👍💪✌
Thanks, I like to keep the moral subtle, but the narration at the end kind of sums it up.
It's probably just me drawing undue comparisons, but Morte's mask looks rather like the "Melkotian" prop used in Star Trek's "Spectre of the Gun", only without the vividly colored gels illuminating it.
Good eye, it was a 2nd generation casting from the original Melkotian prop. I just added LED lights behind it for the eyes.
@@williamhedges1519 Wait, WHAT?! It IS a replica of the Melkotian prop??!!! I thought I was just blowing smoke outa' my b...ackside.😮
@@Redfern42 It is, I always thought how eerie the Melkotian looked and wanted to work my prop into an episode.
Penny is absolutely enduring 💜. Incredible cinematography, sets & story. The creative effort is inspiring.
Yes!!! Another amazing episode!! 🥰
Your raven and of course Penny steal the show.
Ah, Penny and raven is here 🙂 Nice work all of you.
Pawsitively love everything you do! I wondered if the Raven might have been Katie Otten. Just in time for Halloween, too.
Thanks, Katie Otten also voiced the raven in an earlier episode, You Had Me At Meow. I thought this episode would be a great way to reuse the raven.
@@williamhedges1519 I'll have to go back and watch that again. I always go back to watch them again anyway. 😃
@@John-g6x1h I like putting lots of Easter eggs in the episodes that you might not notice at first viewing.
@@williamhedges1519 Yeah, I'm terrible about catching the Easter eggs, but I did notice the one about Schrodinger's cat. Just love your work!
I really like your miniature work with the van.
Thanks, I was able to modify a toy van to match my full size one and reused my plaster mountain from The Cat Came Back.
Great to see the van again!
This is the main episode that I bought it for, but it worked out for the other episodes too.
What a fun episode, William! Something for everyone: Easter-eggs, breaking the fourth wall, terror, the van over the seat stunt (that probably made for a headache and backache), Adele in the MIT yearbook, humor, and Penny's cheesy (but classic) comics! I appreciated the nod to the door in the Wishing machine crash scene that has something behind the door, then it doesn't. And that wonderful radio looks like it was built to survive a nuclear war (probably because it was). I wish I could go to Walmart and still buy someting that nice.
Thanks, I throw in a lot of my favorite ideas and things that inspire me. I always loved the Wishing machine derelict in Lost in Space and and wanted to build a section of it. I thought the yearbook with Adele was a good way to connect the two other episodes with Adele in it, the older Adele in What the Cat Dragged In, and the 1967 Adele in The Cat Came Back.
Great job Will love it
A Magical Mystery tour to the next town... It was Definitely a great Trip.... 😊
Thanks, I always wanted to try a road trip episode, even though for the most part the van never left the studio.
The hitchhiker. Great job.
Definitely my Twilight Zone inspiration for it, but had to do it as a parody.
i enjoyed it. well done.
Excellent modelling as always.
Thanks, I always like working with miniatures.
very good, I liked it
This is utterly delightful. Thank you for all the effort you put nito it.
I loved it! Thank you!
Where did you get the Burroughs B205 computers?
They are all replicas that I built. One did have an original faceplate from the show though.
really enjoyed it, the ending was really good Bill. But I am such a kitty lover, so anything Penny is in I'm a fan!
Thanks, of course it's a parody of the Twilight Zone episode, The Hitchhiker, but I had to have an additional twist or that would have been the end of the series.
nice 60 sci-fi homage :-). Who needs voice recognition or computers (except the Burrows of course) when you have a cat 🙂
When you don't have other humans to talk to, you at least need a cat to carry on a conversation.
It's now September and we are still patiently waiting.
It won't be too much longer. It's showing at one film festival tomorrow and then at two others over the next two weeks, so at the end of the month it will be public.
@@williamhedges1519 That's awesome! Is the film festival at the Toronto International Film Festival?
@@PunchBuggyDreams No, it's at local ones where I can watch it with an audience, the first is Sioux City, Iowa.
@@williamhedges1519 All the best of luck Bill.
Brilliantly executed. You're pulling off some of these techniques as well as they've ever been done. Can't wait to see the rest!
Matt was lucky to find your business! Thanks for being kind to him!
Thanks, it's not really a business, it's just a hobby for me making films. It was great to meet Matt.
bro this feels so good its like modern yet also retro it feels great.
Thanks, 1960s shows were a big influence on me and how I film.
1:50 There it is. Matt Parker actually walked through that door! Damn, seeing the tv tube replacement box. Always having to open the back and find the likely culprit and run down and test it. Then hope the store had that one in stock. Helluva memory there.
The spaceship is the one permanent standing set for the series, the other sets are always changed out, even the TV shop was dressed just for that episode, since that building was used as other sets. It was earlier used as a Post Office. ua-cam.com/video/rIbx92cyYSc/v-deo.html
So there's Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea with the ship design being a mash between the Jupiter 2 and the Seaview, not to mention the landscape being very Lost in Space. Flash Gordon serials with the credits and even the music during that portion. A bit of Batman with the dutch angle of the "villain." Some Good, Bad, and Ugly with the standoff. And Forbidden Planet with the energy monster.
I was inspired by the best, what I grew up watching.
i wish i could get a set like the first couple scenes, but i am only 7 and have no money to build a set and i am shy, but i will try to make a movie with actors when im not shy.
I started making movies with my cat since I didn't think I could get actors. Only after I did that, did I get other actors wanting to help out with my movies. Also it doesn't take big sets either, just film what's around you and what you know about. A little creativity goes a long way to making a good filmmaker.
this helped me make a credits scene for my movie
Great, I'd like to see it when it's done.
well i have only made the credits for the movie so i still have to film
amazing just amazing!☺👍❤ just wow! thank you for sharing this collection
i love that penny read war and peace lol
Penny is smarter than you realize as the series progresses.
You are very talented. Saw you on the maths show and had to have a look
I'm glad it led you here. The Burroughs 220 was used in a previous episode of mine, Cat Noir.
This was great, lol. Thanks to all who made it.
Your shows are awesome, I'm glad I found this channel.
Epic tale man ✌
At 40:00 I was really expecting that to continue "But still.... I miss that car."
That's kind of implied when he touches it one last time. :)
