I'm using the Liquin original by Winsor&Newton but I can't lighten the black for the underpainting, any advices?
Hello Pytel! Thanks for the question and thanks for watching. If you are using black for the stain drawing layer, you will want to use a little solvent and/or more Liquin to thin out the black to allow more of the white of the canvas to sneak through lightening the black. Or you can always add a little titanium or zinc white to lighten the black. Either way, I recommend just not to apply it too heavy so that it is easily painted over or mixed into the final rendering. how do you make blue??? This video says that ivory black is just dark blue but how to make light blue??? Do I just add white??? Or would it make gray?

Hello sir do Fat Over Lean matters to Alla Prima?
Hello Kenneth! Great question. “Fat over lean” allows the artist to construct a painting through multiple layers so that there will be less cracking over time and the painting will be more flexible. So, in regards to a layered painting that dries over time, the answer is no because alla prima typically is done in one wet-on-wet layer. Sadly, in part this is why so many impressionist's paintings are cracking so soon. However, there are many artists that create multiple layers of the alla prima method on top of one another. So if you are wanting to create multiple layers of alla prima on top of one another, then yes, you should have your foundation layers thinner than your final layers. Also, it is just a good foundational rule in oil painting to keep your initial painting drawing and block-in thinner than your final marks and rendering. This helps ensure that the artist is not fighting muddy colors and values by over mixing the final marks and rendering with the initial heavy setup. Basically, I try to keep all of my initial painting thinner until I know what I am doing so that I do not have to fight it later on. This makes painting a bit more effective and pleasurable. If the best time to use this palette is when the colors you are painting are all contained within this palette... isn't that just basic color matching skills?
Thanks for the comment. That is true. But I would argue that "basic color matching" is not so basic and needs to be refined through deliberate limitation, awareness, and practice. Getting to know individual colors and color relationships is so overwhelming for the beginner especially if they are not paying attention to naturalist color harmonies derived by light. The Zorn palette limits the colors so much that it forces the artist to intentionally create and more importantly to be intentionally aware of what they are really seeing. Again, through what they are not able to create. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
zorn pallete is the best demonstration on how we actually perceive color.... thing will look more red if you surround it with green, even if you dont use red.. that is pretty much the major thing i learn from painting landscape... everything is a shade of brown..

I love this video. I've been painting with oil paints for some time but since I left school I needed to become more conscious about what to do with art waste. I too have recycled glass bottles for the used solvent as for disposal of collected paint waste I've learnt that I wasn't being eco-friendly or safe. I am excited to watch your other videoes. Decent tips. I just clean my brushes in turpentine in a Silicoil jar. I don't wash them with soap at all. If they are stiff when I go to use them again, then I will soak them in turpentine for a few minutes, and they will loosen up and be ready to go . This works even if the brushes have sat for years without use.

The problem with Zorn is that Ivory black has none of the blueness that the actual pigment (made of charred Ivory) used to have. It is just carbon black in a different tube. All the colors have changed over the years. To make maters worse, while the Zorn palette has gained in popularity on UA-cam, I once contacted a very experienced paint tech, at one of the top companies, and asked him which colors he recommended for the Zorn palette. He had never heard of it. So were aren't going to get much support from the paint companies. The first company that cracks the code, will probably gain a lot of support.

we use OIL TO REMOVE MAKEUP so it's a good thing. I use clove oil and safflower oil to COAT MY BRUSH after wiping and I don't "clean" the brushes until i'm done with the painting. These coated and hanging on a horizontal wrack can last weeks!

i've learned that with clove oil and safflower oil i can coat my brush and KEEP THEM COVERED with oil after wiping paint off so they KEEP FINE on a wrack if i'm painting within 2 weeks and just keep some brushes for lights and some for darks and so i do NOT HAVE TO CLEAN UP EVERY DAY, which is a pain and abuses my brush.

@@michaeljohnnolan it's HELLA COOL to not have to clean up each time. I learned it from a fine artist here whose work is exemplary and I doubt great masters cleaned every day...so i tried it and surprisingly easy, even after a week of not painting. I don't know if FREEZING them like you do with oil based housepaints works but this is easy peasy and i only use a few brushes at a time anyway.
