Matt fell in love with the new Gladiator miniatures from V&V Miniatures but was curious how he should paint the Crupellarius. It is not well known, nor well documented. So we decided to do some research into what a Crupellarius might have looked like and apply that to his depiction of this unknown gladiator.
Here are the paints that Matt used:
• Primed in Black Primer (Stynylrez black) with a light zenithal (top down spray) of white (I used white ink, you can replicate this with spray cans or with black primer + white dry brush all over)
• Army Painter Speed Paint Metallic Broadsword Silver - All Metallic areas that are meant to be iron (all the body armor except greaves + the shield and sword)
• Army Painter Speed Paint Metallic Hoplite Gold - All Metallic areas that are meant to be bronze (all fittings on armor, some decoration on shield, the greaves, and sword hilt and pommel)
• Army Painter Speed Paint Pallid Bone - All Padded Under-armor, near legs and arms
• Pro Acryl Dark Jade - cloth clothing base color (undertones)
• Pro acryl Jade - Cloth Clothing mid tone
• Pro Acryl Bright Jade - Cloth Clothing highlights
• Pro Acryl Dark Ivory - Highlight for Padded Under-armor
• Vallejo Model Air Gunmetal - Mid tone for iron metal areas
• Vallejo Model Air Steel - Highlight for iron metal areas
• Citadel Shade Nuln Oil - Spot shading around ties/straps to taste
• Vallejo Game Color Polished Gold - Highlight for Bronze areas over top of the Hoplite Gold
• Citadel Shade Reikland Fleshshade - Heavy wash of all bronze areas
• Pro Acryl Red Oxide - Thin armor/padding straps
• Vallejo Model Color Iraqui Sand - Base
