Preparing Your Lawn For A Slice Seeding
Переглядів 8 тис.4 роки тому
The most important thing you can do to prepare your lawn for a successful seeding is to mow your lawn nice and short in the week or two prior to our visit. Set your mower at the lowest or near lowest mowing height so that when you're done mowing, the lawn is no higher than 2 inches tall. Note: Mowing like this is NOT good for your existing grass and that is the point. It shocks the existing gra...

    Is this different than just thatch?

    • @GNOrganicLawns
      @GNOrganicLawns Рік тому

      Thanks for asking! It is indeed. Snow Mold is a fungus, encouraged when lawns are left too long over the Winter, and nutrients and trace elements are lacking. Thatch is a layer of undigested roots, leaves, and organic plant material that settles between the turfgrass and the soil surface. Too much Thatch can actually be one of the promoters of Snow Mold in the late Winter and early Spring. I hope this helps answer your question :)

    Hopefully one day we'll stop putting lawns up on a pedestal and actually live on properties that benefit us as well as wildlife. I'm turning my backyard into a mass of wildflowers, shrubs, and native plants. The front 'lawn' will be clover and whatever else decides to grow. Wouldn't usually comment on a video disagreeing with the content, but it just keeps showing up in my recommended.

    • @marycervantes6421
      @marycervantes6421 Рік тому

      Hi Brad...thanks for your comments! I agree that lawns are often abused and taken care of in a way that offsets some of the many benefits they provide. Did you know that a lawn produces 5 to 10 times as much oxygen per square acre than a forest does? That's pretty good! If we can avoid using chemicals to maintain them, they build huge biological soil communities that pull carbon out of the atmosphere too! I'm glad that you don't want to kill all the flowers in your lawn with chemicals... Perhaps you'd be interested in adding our microclover to your front lawn to encourage a beneficial plant that improves soil at a much faster rate than many typical "weeds" that will pop up if you just let it go completely. Finally, you might want to consider an electric robotic mower to keep your lawn mowed without all the air and noise pollution...they have a far better environmental profile than a typical lawn mower. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

      Hi there...if it isn't mowed, it does grow...we've noticed that if it gets mowed regularly it retains a lot of its micro qualities but it is true that while the leaves can be smaller than traditional dutch white clover, they are maybe 75% the size. Another benefit is that when mowed, it does not flower as prolifically as straight dutch white clover.

    I'm new to Eastern Tennessee and I have a huge patch of front lawn that gets sun all day. I bought some white dutch clover seed but I'm having 2nd thoughts. I am concerned about it infiltrating neighbors' yards, and we have no irrigation system and I'm trying to stay away from a yard that needs watering in summer because we're in the country. Is clover a way to go, should I mix it with a Bermuda seed, Bermuda made for full sun? I'm perplexed Another comment or question. Since I'm in Tennessee and we have pretty hot months of summer, if I do plant clover I was leaning toward white dutch and not microclover because I read it holds up better to months of hot full sun. And what about mixing it with a full sun Bermuda seed?

    • @alecmcclennan
      @alecmcclennan 2 роки тому

      Hi Stan, Clover is a great way to go for your lawn...we like microclover better than standard dutch white clover because it is a little less noticeable (neighbor issue) and it seems to fill in areas a little better. But, regular dutch white clover is good too as long as you don't mind the flowers being more prolific. Anyway, not sure what type of grass you have now, but if you have bermuda, you probably don't need to add more. Bermuda being a warm season grass may be brown much of the Winter...the clover may help hide that a bit. If you already have grass, I'd just add the clover. If you're worried about your neighbors maybe don't seed all the way up to their line...leave a 5 or 10 foot buffer.

    So cool! We just bought a house in south Florida and I want a clover lawn! Yea for the bees and yea for the environment! I’d love more info and where to get micro clover

      His website is at the end of the clip, store.whygoodnature.com/microclover/. BUT.. If you want more clover flowers and more bees, then micro is probably NOT the way to go, because fewer flowers. If you really want flowers, then Dutch Clover may be the way to go, but your lawn may look like a sea of white blossoms

    Mine are really bad , there are just too many to use that tool, I have one of. I don't know if I want to use a spot application I'd have to spot the whole lawn.

      Means your soil is very compacted. I always appreciate the dandelions, it's crazy seeing people trying to get rid of them. Best to just lay down asphalt and paint it green. 🤭
