Zion National Park 4K (2024) [Part II]: The Narrows on Opening Day. 150 CFS! Highest Allowed to Hike
One of the main reasons for choosing Zion National Park as one of our 2024 trips was to hike the iconic, and world famous, Narrows.
In a stroke of uncharacteristic bad noBear luck, it was a record snowfall year in Utah and the Narrows was rumored to not reopen before June!
The Narrows cannot be hiked until the water levels drop below 150 CFS (cubic feet per second). And those levels have to maintain below that line for 24 hours, for it to be considered safe. When we left for Zion the CFS was over 200 CFS. Essentially… zero chance it would drop to 150 by the time we arrived.
But CFS doesn’t adhere to noBear Luck!
Upon driving from Vegas to Zion, Buldo took one final stab at the Reddit forums to see where the levels were at around 9 am. To his shock, the levels had somehow dropped to 155 CFS!!
If the CFS dropped to 150 by 11 am there was a remote chance that they could maintain that level for 24 hours, which would mean by the time they reached the trailhead at 11 am the next day they could possibly still have a shot at one of America’s most iconic day hikes. To say the boys were excited would be an understatement.
We arrived at the hotel in La Verkin, Utah at around noon, and Buldo checked what the Virgin River was reading. Lo and behold, the CFS sat at 149!!! It was on! All they had to do was pray that it would maintain that CFS for 24 hours.
When the boys awoke the next morning to get our gear packed and ready they were stoked to find out that The Narrows was a go!!
Not only were we going to be able to accomplish this goal, but we were about to be the first hikers to have a stab at The Narrows for the 2024 season… and we’d get to hike it at its most exciting and dangerous!
The following is the adventure that awaited us.
It’s important to note that we had never done anything like this. A 8+ mile slot canyon/canyoneering desert hike through fast moving, and very high water.
What’s the worst that could happen? noBear doesn’t usually like to ask that question until AFTER an adventure. For obvious reasons.
Enjoy!

      So we have a group of 7 now, but we started with 4 back in 2019. We were sitting at work one dreary winter day in February, in New Jersey, and a video of Yellowstone came up on one of our monitors. We said “hey, let’s go to Yellowstone”. Long story short, Yellowstone turned into Glacier and Yellowstone… And here we are four years later, with almost doesn’t national parks under our belts…. And a ton of experience and gear. The funny part of the story, though, is that our plan was to go to a different national park every year. It took us all of two years to realize we had to go back to Glacier. The place is literally heaven. And I’m sure it’s going to take us less than two years for us to wanna go back. The most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.

On the Grinnell Glacier Trail we got full sunshine and 85 degrees, snow, hail, driving rain, thunder and lightning, and bluebird sunshine again all within an 8 hour hike. Lol. One day the weather report said 1% chance of rain. I couldn’t believe a weather person would even write that with a straight face at the time. Guess what? We did savage alpine on our first day in Denali back in August and had intended to do the river trail the next day but switched to mountain vista to glass for animals. We went to the river bottom in hopes of taking some bear footprint photos but instead saw a bear about a hundred yards away or so feeding on blueberries. It was directly behind you at the 17:12 mark of your video. What a great trip. Thanks for the video! It was like I was there again.

      Whoa! You’re seriously lucky you made it out ok. Yeah… there is a reason we call Glacier the BiPolar Weather Park. The things we’ve seen there, in spans in minutes, has almost defied reason. There’s a clip at the end of this cut that I almost didn’t include because it didn’t make any sense, and disrupted the continuity. One second it’s pouring with black skies and the next it’s completely sunny. That cut was in a span of 5 minutes real-time. But it looks so ridiculous in the video that it almost looks as though the one clip is from a different part of the day. Insane. I’m glad you like the videos. There will be more going up soon. Thanks

    walk the shoreline around the lake.... my parents ashes are at the far end of the lake - looking out at heaven's peak. every mother's day and father's day i would be on the trail before sunrise and at the far end of the lake ALONE to spend time with their 'essence'.... then even that got too crowded. i'll miss my visits to talk with them. but the rude, arrogant, loud, privileged, know-it-all idiots who've ruined ANY park experience with their inconsiderate ways and overbearing snobbishness were too much......God i hate those assholes. i really hate what Glacier has become after 35+ years of solitude and communal times. it's become a shithole of 'entitled' pricks..........

  • @jerrystraka7856
    @jerrystraka7856 2 роки тому

    apparently you're a flatlander.... the 'exposed' 100 yards of Highline trail above the road is safe as can be. it's as wide as a sidewalk and has 'hose' and chain for those needing to grasp on. as a person who has summitted every peak around Logan Pass (Clements, Reynolds-14 times, Oberlin-over 25 times, Bearhat-3 times, Cannon-twice, Heavy Runner, Piegan-10 times, Pollock 12 times, Bishop's Cap-twice, Siyeh, Mahtapi, and Gould) exposure is just part of the game in the high country. the trail above the road wouldn't even make the classification index of 2-5. It's a one. It's nothing. It's like standing on a bridge and looking down. also...why didn't you go down to Hidden Lake? it's only another mile and a half. cross the outlet creek and walk around Bearhat mountain (about a mile and half and 800-1000 vertical) to the high ridgeline behind and you can look down at avalanche lake and into floral park, beneath sperry glacier. I've hiked into Hidden about 70 times, half of them alone, and fished for hours undisturbed. up to 20 inch yellowstone cutthroat trout (stocked by the park a century ago). i've seen grizzly and wolverine on many an occasion. found the wolverine den at the base of Bearhat and visited it for 5 years, until the wolverines moved on. the more you experience exposure (meaning heights near edges), the more you become used to it. start by taking the 'down trail' up to Oberlin and walk the top of it. it's easy, accessible, and has great places to safely experience exposure. it's about 1500 vertical and a mile or so hike up the scree to the top. i've seen 5 year old kids up there and 62 year old retirees (me being one). 35 years of hiking, climbing, biking, back country camping, high mountain lake fishing and cross country skiing in Glacier is forever etched in my mind. i have thousands of picture. But the increase in tourists and rapid growth of the Flathead valley has changed the experience forever. it will never be the same. in my opinion, it has been ruined. so i finally moved away to get away from the rude. arrogant, privileged trash that dominates the park now. sad. very sad. it used to be friendly. it used to be a place to escape those kind of people....now - they're everywhere. assholes everywhere Loving the Andes in my retirement. the people in ecuador are the kindest in the world..... i'm never returning to 'gunland' and trump idiotville....never

    I am glad you posted this video because it shows people just how dangerous parts of that trail can be. Hopefully, those that know their limits (like myself), I know I would never attempt to cross that section of trail carved out of the mountain itself. • @noBearAdventures
      @noBearAdventures 2 роки тому

      Thanks Mike! We were there for 8 days. The landslide at Polychrome has put the Parks road out of commission past that point. Eilson Visitors center will be hard to get to, unless you want to do a multi day backpacking trip out there. Also, Wonder Lake is only accessible by plane now. From what I’ve heard, it’ll be at least until 2023 for them to have the Parks Road back up and running past Polychrome. However, there are a ton of great multi day trips that can be accomplished from the zone where the Toklat crosses the Parls Road. If you head out towards the Alaska Range from the road you can hit some really cool glaciers and some hidden gems out that way. When were you thinking about going?
