    How long do you graze them strictly on pasture only, & how long does it take until you have to move them to a different pasture? What do you have to protect against predators? I raised an older chick once, strictly free-ranged; he grew just fine & was the picture of health. Winters were not bad where we lived at the time. I used to raise rabbits at my family home, and one year, a small tornado rolled our rabbit hutches over several times, killing my favorite doe & letting one of her babies escape. Even though I had given them fresh greens everyday, when I finally was able to catch him, he looked SO MUCH healthier after living in the wild!!!

    I like it. I've always thought if I did broilers I would do something similar to this. My brother-in-law has started running broilers on our land this summer in pens. But I think he's going to switch next summer to do more of this open free range style.

    I have watched numerous videos saying how inactive etc that Cornish Cross chickens are but they’re usually in a confined chicken tractor. My 15 10 week old Cornish Cross free range chickens are almost identical to normal chickens…in regards to foraging from morning till night with the usual breaks….jumping, running, dust bathing etc…..when I let them out in the coop early in the mornings, they are often relaxing just waiting to jump and run out the coop… They eat a varied diet of free fruit and Vegies plus a range of wheat, barley and sunflower sprouts..and of course lots of grass, bugs etc……I introduced them to worms and grass sprouts etc from the beginning as day olds…plus a basic chick starter. Amazed at how many videos speak of how clumsy, inactive, unhealthy etc…..I think they may well be just like humans….what we eat and our environment that allows for exercise..mine do not smell at all and they’re are coming up to be nice big birds…might try breeding from them as I have heard of some success…..I don’t have the right scales…but many feel pretty heavy….very healthy birds.

      Most of the braces are holding up. Some have moved a few inches from the tension of the fence, so I have to make my poly rope gates a little longer. One of them snapped off when a calf ran into the fence a few feet away from the brace. Overall, considering how cheap and easy they were to put up, I'm happy with them.

    Your pastures are beautiful! Not trying to take anything away from that obvious fact but t-posts and even those step in posts will sink in the ground over time. I’ve seen them sink down 2+ feet if snow loads are heavy enough. Keep up the good work!

    Thank you for sharing! Love everything they send, we look forward to it every month. I know what a struggle this last year has been to get this incredible food processed in the same manner as it was grown, with a lot of love. Mastodon valley has set the benchmark for how food should be made. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Hopefully you're helping people get the knowledge to do more for themselves. My wife doesn't totally agree with me, but the veg side of the enterprise is kind of a nuisance for us. But it's a gateway of sorts to lead people into creating the best farm their is, the one in their back yard.

    Are you running South Poles? (left my glasses in the tractor). We have a pretty rare breed called Irish Dexter, due to how low their compaction factor is, plus they are dual purpose so we can milk for our own family and friends needs. As Greg Judy would say, those are some fat, happy cows!

    That corner brace, how far do those 4 wires go from where you were facing? Just trying to see how far I could go with a 5 wire. I love this idea and looks super easy!

    Hi! How many mile of fence do you think this would work for?

    • @KennyH88
      @KennyH88 4 роки тому

      Should power 2.5 miles of 3 strand cattle fence, 3/4 mile of 6 strand sheep fence, 16 rolls of the 164' sheep/goat nets or 6 - 8 rolls of the 164' poultry nets. All distances are dependent on amount of grass/weed load on the fence.

    great video, I'm thinking of converting a hay field into Hemp, do you think direct transplanting into the harvested hay field is enough or I should till at list the planting rows? thanks

    • @mastodonvalleyfarm7647
      @mastodonvalleyfarm7647 4 роки тому

      No, the sod will almost for sure be too dense to allow the young annual plants to compete with the regrowing grass. You'll probably need to either till or solarize the planting rows.
