here's to the tears you knew you'd cry lol
Keep pushing. Ignore the engagements and the numbers for now. This is important work.
Oof that last line, hot damn.
I think it's faith. Faith is how we get the body home
Very interesting!
_i am the flame that beholds itself_
What do you think about Sartre's rejection of it?
Rationalistic approach to god will always fail , as it has always failed. You are trying to trap water in a net, doesn't work. Everyone has a god they worship, they would just give it a different name. Their existence is his existence, so they try to make excuses for his existence in different things. as iqbal would often say, I used to hear people say God doesn't exist. But now when someone says that to me i like to reply him in the opposite by saying ' Man doesn't exist.'
Such an interesting discussion! I agree that the concept of 'God' is interpreted differently across the world, leading to the creation of different religions with different beliefs of the nature of this concept. It just depends where you are born in the world - if you are born in India, you are most likely a Hindu, if you are born in Pakistan, you are most likely a Muslim and if you are born in the UK, you are most likely a Christian and all of these different cultures just happened to have a different way of interpreting 'God' just like they have different languages, different music, different styles of clothing etc. No one culture is 'correct' and this can also be applied to religion - it is just important to be open minded and be able to see different perspectives.
I am an amateur lover of philosophy, and especially the topic of consciousness is probably the topic that I am most interested in in all of life. This conversation between two philosophers, however young, is super cool and very educational. I learned at least a few different ideas and phrasings which I really liked. One that I'll mention is the idea of consciousness has matter rather than matter has consciousness. Super super cool conversation, thank you so much!!!!! I really really like this. Interested in other ones.
another really beautiful discussion ❤
I love this
Rotten tomatoes rating system is garbage. You are mentioning the rotten tomato score as if 93% means that people have on average rated the film a 9.3/10 which is simply not the case. The percentage on rotten tomatoes is based off of the percentage of people who rated the film a 6/10 or higher. It's a flawed system as a mediocre to good film could be rated 90%+ even if most of those ratings were a 6/10 or 7/10. Imdb or letterboxd has a way more accurate rating system imo.
Having seen both LOTR and Heretic, if you gave me a choice of which to watch again, it wouldn't be LOTR. Not enough caffeine in the world for that. I thought the ending of Heretic was a bit weak and obvious (think Checkhov's gun), but overall I really enjoyed it. As to ratings, does the general public really use them as a measure of greatness, or are they simply an indication of how enjoyable people found a film? Certainly, I wouldn't take "it won an Oscar" as a gold-plated badge of quality.
I demand to have some booze!
I love your podcast! What strikes me is how the intensity of romantic relationships in liminal spaces has a permanent character to it, those moments stay with you forever but their intensity relies on them being finite. I used to associate certain "good" ideas (good in the Platonic sense as in what one looks for in life) with this feeling. From it's intensity I deduced it must be true (as in, true love) and in its permanence (as a feeling that can stay with you for years) granted it a degree of universality. All ideas associated with positive concepts: truth and universality, and implicitly, permanence. This made me conclude it was something I aspired to and wanted in my life, and gave a lot of priority to. Experience has taught me that I could not have been more off the mark. Love (as in flesh and blood love) is nothing of the sort.
I don't agree with the performative aspect of the goodbye in a romantic relationship that occurs in a liminal space. It can be devastating and your head can stay attached to that place and moment wishing it would have lasted forever.
Where on earth did you get your lovely couch?
I'm sorry but how can you describe the settings of CMBYN as "liminal spaces"? It may be a place of transit for Oliver, but even then the 6 weeks he spent working and lounging in the gorgeous villa, Crema and all the other beautiful and bucolic scenery are far too long to consider it a "liminal space". Not to mention that a liminal space would need to be unsettling in some way to be considered as such and Elio's parents' house is a warm, welcoming nest for their family, friends and students.
I have not seen Heretic yet. Interesting. Do you think Kermode is slipping? because he is not the only critic to gush over this film.
Interesting take guys, look forward to hearing more
Adore this trilogy, and the concept of love in a liminal space!
On Amazon a 4.3 is pretty good 😎
This first point is similar to something I read about how in German there is a distinction between: Körper - physical body - anatomical (like corpse) Leib - lived, living body These are really interesting podcasts, thanks for making them.
I recently discovered your podcast through instagram and I'm enjoying it a lot, please keep it up!
Appreciate the video, not much like this on UA-cam, keep it up! Please 🙏
Thank you for this lovely video
😂😂 Such a childlike, surface level understanding of psychology. Keep trying boys.
Loving the videos, always excited when the next comes out. And I wondered when Alan Watts would come up..! Video idea: how written language affects the way you think (letters to define words that follow linear one-after-the-other as opposed to pictorial symbols like in Japanese)
I'm very happy i came across your channel! I also made my graduation project about the spirit of art inspiring a young painter and you guys just summerized that topic brilliantly! ♥️ lots of love from Egypt!🪷
I'm very confused watching this. Does this mean that neither of you actually watched the earlier Dune movie???
The direct answer lies in one place alone. Self-investigation (ātma-vicāra) and one man alone has provided the tool. Ramana Maharshi. Read, know and Be.
Y'all should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.
She can do that. I’m cool with that.
Interesting stuff
you guys have some interesting ideas and it's a brand new pod, but sometimes i feel like each of you is kind of talking past the other without genuinely listening in order to connect and deepen the discussion... just my perception. much love and i hope you keep it going
❤
1:18 I think this is an unfair comparison, because Duncan Idaho in the movie didn't have enough screen time, there are many and I mean many scenes and events missing from the books that would heavily change peoples view on him... People felt more connected with Boromir because we saw his ups and down, one side portraying him as a great warrior, while on his down side we saw how the ring effected him, that made people feel bad for him, and In the end he had his redemption when fighting till his death for Merry and Pippin. While Duncan simply had a short "big brother" role where he was a honorable warrior throughout the movie... that's all there was to him, which is simply not the Duncan from the books.
a good take for disappearing of laptop screen (around 14:10) also is so-called VR headsets, where the screen is mixed with reality
I relate with the initial point that lots of films don't have 'soul' - but I also hear some of the criticisms in the comments saying Duncan is just not a good parallel for Boromir. Maybe the problem is much bigger than just an issue with the screen-writing.
I really appreciate your efforts! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
I don’t think that humans are capable enough of understanding every deity, both good and bad combined with the 4,400 and counting religions. All created by men. 😂. It’s all 🐂💩. Only when we can’t see, hear, taste, touch, or breathe ever again will the ultimate question be answered, and even then our brain will be gone too… quite the conundrum, huh? 😂
Love it
He seems super pissed off to me. You know when you're so angry you start crying against your will? That.
When that one friend wants to talk about himself but through something indirectly. In this case I'm seeing. "Hey i look like him, let's talk about him without acknowledging that I'm trying to appear as this character and hope someone notices".
Enlightening AND life affirming chat!!! Beautiful ❤
Man dats you in dat painting 😂💯
My thoughts were "he looks just like the painting" 🤔
Grear video! Just a comment. Stray away from "evolution". both asolation and communalism served a porpuse in a certain time.
This looks like a very one sided conversation 😂
Because you’re watching one persons point…
@anyotherkingdom really? I never would have guessed that...
Dune is a very different story than LOTR. It is dry (no pun intended) and meant to engage the intellect much more so than the heart. That's probably the central reason why Tolkien read Dune and said, "I dislike Dune with some intensity..." The reason why Dune and LOTR are so often compared, much more so than, for instance, Game of Thrones and LOTR, is that both rest primarily on their thematic strength to drive the narrative, and contain many interwoven layers of themes. However, Dune's themes are nihilistic or pessimistic for the most part, use your choice of word, and LOTR's are full of grace and hope. They intersect at many points, such as in the temptation and dangers of power, but the fundamental message couldn't be more different. The other reason is that for the time their worldbuilding was by far the most original and complex ever written in their genres, and each book has become the most influential in science fiction and fantasy, as well as massively influencing each other's genres. Tolkien seemed to recognize this when he said in the same letter that Herbert was "an author...who is working along the same lines". He almost certainly respected Herbert's careful and elaborate worldbuilding. The end result, though, is you do not get a story that is going to emotionally fulfill you or warm your cold heart. Also, to hear these grown men say "The experience our parents had when seeing LOTR" makes me feel about 1,000 years old. I saw these films in the theatre as a young man. Thanks :)
