This channel is about art. Music, CGI, game development, documentaries, short films; just basically anything I'm interested in at the time! I hope you enjoy the ride :)
This tiny Ableton rack is absurdly powerful.
recently I've been using these difference splitting racks a lot, they are really useful for creating weird and organic sounds! they are extremely simple in concept, and most of this video is covering various ideas on how to use them in cool ways.
you can get the racks here (free of course): 2l3l.gumroad.com/l/phasedrywet
apologies for the weird false 4k resolution of the video, I used OBS to record for the first time and didn't realize it had auto downscaling on by default until it was too late lolll, next tutorial will have much better video and audio quality.

I just barely finished this song before going on a trip (some sleep had to be sacrificed), but I'm really happy with how it came out! Kind of a mix of a couple things, mainly house (inspired by Fred Again.. again) and future garage. Enjoy :) Lyrics: I watch my fingernails growing long And trees look like flashing colors I'm stuck sick In my room Dancing to the songs I never made And I've assume...

I originally made this song in 18 hours during All Nighter Vol 8, a challenge to make a song from scratch in 24 hours! It didn't end up making the final compilation, so I added some finishing touches to release here :) I really like how the atmosphere of this one came out, and I definitely want to try and make more songs in a short timeframe like this in the future! I also tried something new: ...

This is probably my most purely melodic song to date, and I had a lot of fun messing around with various sound design techniques to make things sound more unique! I started this project around the same time as Everything to Miss You, and I kinda think of them as like sister songs because of that :) Enjoy! Lyrics: Under the surface Your heart makes me worthless These pain pills I felt it I'm too...

With this song I tried to capture the mix of emotions felt during 1 am motivational bursts/moments of reflection :) i was inspired by hypertrance/techno/rave music a lot for this song, and im really happy with how it turned out! hope you enjoy :D Lyrics: I say Fool me like the lover I play If only I could stop from watching (I wanna feel like you were mine) If only you could stop from falling (...

This song is a collab with @arcerionmusic!!! Stream it here: open.spotify.com/album/1aMJdOlzNIAUMIUg1rIsfI (omg first song on my spotify page!) We've been working on and off on this one for the past few months, and it's really exciting to finally post it! Kinda cyberpunk/acid vibes overall, although there's also some orchestral sections so it's kinda hard to pin down to one genre haha Hope you ...
How to generate actually usable drum fills with AI
Переглядів 4,3 тис.Рік тому
AI is getting to the point where it can actually be used a bit in your tracks, and while working on my most recent track I found a good method of making nice sounding AI djembe drum fills in Ableton 11! Hope you find this helpful :) Here's an example of a track using these fills: ua-cam.com/video/XFna8zG9Kzk/v-deo.html Links to things mentioned in the video: Music LM - aitestkitchen.withgoogle....
this is cool and you are ovbisouly talented at sound design but quick question... what would you say were your sources when you were learning the fundamentals of these complex Ableton concepts? did you have a mentor or go to a music school of some sort or buy a online course or is it all self taught?
I'm 100% self taught! I started using Ableton around 11 years ago so I'm very comfortable with it, but most of my learning about sound design and the more complex stuff was within the last 3 years. The main driving factor is every day I do a few short practice sessions specifically to try new things or test out concepts I've thought of, and doing that for long enough you kind of start to discover all these techniques on your own!
Tysm i didnt undestand nothing
😭lmaoo the racks are in the description if you just want to mess around with them yourself sometimes easier to get a feel that way!
Slick moves. I got so many ideas from this. Thanks
This is insane! :O Hats off bruh!
Great stuff! Vital's comb filters are some of my favourite, it's most underrated feature i'd go as far as to say!
true true! I love how they have damping built in I haven't seen many other combs like that. Definitely the most intuitive one I've seen.
thanks!
weird and cool
cool video man, i've been bored with sound design lately, haven't even thought about using phase cancellation like that
thank you!! i feel there's still so much unexplored with sound design it's just hard to find the new things haha
I didn't know I needed to spectrally pan in my life before this
oh my god it's so useful there's so many times I'll have a sound and just like the low end is randomly to the side of something and it'll never sound centered unless you can spectrally pan lmaoo
@@2L3L Totally ! No more using Utility to shift some low end and wreck the rest of the stereo image, your trick is super cool
Bro speedran this tutorial 😂 but this is crazy
Massively cool!!
Is this one your patreon? I’d totally throw you a sub for the vital presets!
unfortunately this one can't be, it uses a decent amount of 3rd party vsts and like 7 vital instances which take like 80% of your cpu, its just not really actually usable past an experiment haha Id recommend just getting ample guitar m lite for your guitaring needs, it's sampled but is really nice and sounds better than this! thank you for the interest though :)
nice girly hands
lmao thank you
these is insane dudeeeeeeeee. so glad the algorithm gods send me your channel
holy moly fuck this is so cool and i don't even know what's goin on
lmaoooo thank you you can grab the racks in the description if you want to mess around with them yourself!
This is the craziest physical modeling walkthrough I've seen, fantastic job!
Digging more and more your channel and you're just so talented, creative and putting the work, wow. I have lots of respects for you !!
thank you!! words like that mean a lot :)
This is absolutely wild.
Whoa..heavy man
you missed 2 more years to become meme in Poland
😔😔😔
I found the examples a bit too short.
I agree in hindsight yeah! If you have any specific questions let me know and I can answer here, and also the racks are downloadable in the description if you just want to mess around with them!
@@2L3L thank you so much
the processes are reminded me off the Uzumaki vst
Awesome, really cool idea I hadn't considered
Well done
This is awesome. Needs a name though haha
I've been calling the technique difference splitting personally!
I have some dumb questions. Phase Dry Wet rack comes with only the Effect chain activated, while the Dry and Wet chains are disable. Split Differences rack comes with the Only Differences and Unchanged activated while the Effect chain is disabled. Is this intended? Should we add effects to all three chains but only keep the already active ones to notice any changes?
yes, this is intended! the disabled chains have audio routing either from or to them already, so effects put on them will still come through the final output. i mainly have them laid out in that way so it's easy to access them :)
@@2L3L Thanks a mil!
This is a great technique! I figured this out years ago with distortion (exactly like the first part of the vid) but never thought to try it with other effects! I call it “dry nulling”. Btw, you can do the distortion version of this with a single plug by subtracting waveshaper curves instead of the audio
still so good
ty djeb<3
this is true
Is this in 1.0 speed?
😭😭indeed it is, although I cut out most of the idle parts and load times. a bit too fast in hindsight fs
This is so amazing I can't believe it
thank you!!
This is next level madness 🎉 love it
This is so clever! All the investigating behind all of this is mind blowing. Today I learned new things about noise cancellation aplications that I could not imagine before. THANK YOU SO MUCH.❤
thank you for the kind words!!
getting back into music these days. Thanks for making some actually creative and original production content, not really genre specific. pretty rare.
thank you! glad you enjoyed :) i try to mess around with a bunch of genres so I'm glad that pays off in some way haha
For the texture example, if I understood, the final mix you hear is the dry kick clipped + noise only on the clipped transient part. Personally, I prefer to (1) isolate the clipped part and add noise on it using a more readable rack (dry phase reverted + dry clipped) and (2) add the dry in a new parallel rack so you end up with dry + noise on the clipped transients. You have further control on what level of clipping you want on the dry signal (if you want clipping) and what level of clipped noise you want. You also have a more readable chain.
from your explanation here it sounds like that method would also make the clipped parts twice as loud (unless you are clipping the dry signal in both instances, in which case it's the same method as the second rack in this video) it's pretty close to what you said for the first rack, but it functionally subtracts the clipped part of the noise from the input wave, leading to no decrease in headroom, which is not possible otherwise. Not really a big difference though except for more technical uses haha
Bro just casually dropping bombs.
Ok Wow! Seems interesting but so hard to follow. I had to stop after about 4 minutes in. So much rapid fire info.. Didn't really hear any of the effect as it was too short before you moved to the next thing. I'll have to try again later. But for me this was too fast.
i agree for sure in hindsight, when I was editing even I was like damn I should've made the demos longer 😭 but I wasn't expecting this many people to see it so I just figured getting it out into the world was better than waiting haha the rack downloads are in the description though so feel free to mess around with the concept yourself, probably easier to get a hold of it that way!!
Wow, incredible.
HELP - I'm running a sine wave from Operator through Peakeater and then running it in parallel with a phase inverted utility via an Audio Effect rack. I grab a drum groove and play both tacks at the same time. There's no effect on the drum groove whatsoever. They're both simply just playing at the same time? What am I doing wrong? - HELP
the signal you are running through the peakeater and the parallel phase inversion has to be the same! the operator having stuff on it wouldnt affect the drum groove at all if you have nothing on the drum groove
Could you possibly make a video on how you approach sound design please?
I will probably do something like that eventually!! for now I'm mainly focusing on music and am doing tutorials just when I get some extra time though so I can't make any promises haha
pure madness. sending this to all my friends, tyvm. I'd really like to know - is there a way I can use this method to organically modulate the volume of one channel using the audio from another? (similar to a ring Mod sidechain or that FLVTTER VST) - I'm trying to do this with a limiter, but thinking this is imperfect as every limiter has some form of time averaging. would love your help on this 🙏🏻
If you're just trying to go for like amplitude modulation this setup cannot do that, the closest thing is the bit in the texture section of the video. it depends on what you want the effect to sound like though! without smoothing the modulation would create new harmonics in the sound and thus the sounds would have to be fairly simple to prevent things from being super chaotic (like how those ring mod tricks pretty much only work with basic wave shapes). If you want it over a longer timescale id recommended MAGC from Melda which matches the gain of the input to the sidechain signal (you can also add this into the difference splitting racks if you want different effects on bits further from the initial volume!
@@2L3L damn! that's too bad. I really want to believe it's possible 😭 I'll definitely check out MAGC, I've tried using MRingMod for this before but never heard of this one. If you're not familiar with this FLVTTER thing btw it's a really sick alternative to traditional sidechain where it sounds like it's "subtracting" your kick/snare from the carrier signal (sounds like clipping) without adding any new frequencies at all - definitely going beyond basic wave shapes. I've been able to recreate it with Bitwig's 'Audio Rate Modulator' with rectification turned on, but not in Ableton quite yet. maybe someday 🤷🏼♂️
i do know flvtter yeah! it does not actually really go beyond basic wave shapes, as in a harmonically dense modulator signal will still cause weirdness to occur (much less so than ring modulation though), and is pretty much just amplitude modulation. I don't know the exact internals but I'd imagine it uses some kind of wave shaping on the modulator signal to make the carrier signal get more or less focused in the zero crossings of the modulator wave. In Ableton it would be pretty basic to make a similar effect within Max for Live, I imagine for the basic effect you'd just have to take the absolute value of the modulator wave and then multiply it by -1 and add 1 to invert it, and then use that signal multiplied with the carrier to get the fluttering effect. then as I mentioned before, wave shaping the modulator could help focus if more
@@2L3L I might have to test that explanation with the plugin to see how the carrier signal reacts to a modulator playing high frequencies vs low ones. the way I understood it was it takes the modulator and completely rectifies it, creating a unipolar signal which can then be used as AM on the carrier - at least this was how I was able to recreate the effect with Bitwig. my goal rn is to do this without Max or 3rd party plugins for maximum control and for my own understanding. that and because Max is such a big buggy rabbit hole on its own I'm not ready to go there yet lol anyways thanks for your help 🙏🏻 excited to see whatever's next from your channel
thank you! and yes, I also think the same thing as you, the absolute value I mentioned is the same thing as wave rectification Max for live is actually fairly stable although it can definitely occasionally have some bugs. for well optimized patches at least haha the stock ableton lfo and stuff are a bit bloated because of backwards compatibility and stuff I think. but yeah the only piece I wouldn't know how to do stock without even the stock m4l devices is the amplitude modulation itself
OH that was so amazing i dont even understand half of this, vital is pretty fun
Vids like this are why I am so stubborn with buying plugins and not relying on stock ableton 💀
I wonder what I can do with techno rumbles and 808 bass, this could lead to some insane hybrid rumbles ahhhhhh
Has anyone figured out how to split clips on the fly? Editing clips seems to be taking too much time. Cool vid. Thnx!
what do you mean, like splitting audio clips or something ?? glad you enjoyed the vid :)
Fantastic! I've been looking into utilizing phase in creative ways and this was an absolute masterclass in that, bravo and thank you!
What the actual fuck, this is insane. Is it much to ask for a Ableton scroll vid (like your previous)? This is just mind blowing
I stopped doing those bc at this point there's too many tracks (around 280 i think? forget the exact amount and how many there were before consolidation) 😭 and also I've really gotten into freezing and flattening things more so pretty much none of the plugin chains and stuff are left. but mainly I wanted to be able to include art with it as well!
very smart !
Hey friend - I've been in business as a mixer for 21 years, and I am totally blown away by what you are doing here. I've always prided myself on creative signal flow, but this is like thinking you are really good at basketball, and then seeing Michael Jordan for the first time. Great work, and thank goodness, I still have a lot to learn!
thank you so much!!! 21 years is crazy you probably have some tricks I don't know about as well haha but yeah true, the longer i make music and do processing and stuff the more I realize there's an infinite amount to learn and there's always massive new things to discover
wow
