Self-Sufficient Farming: Harvesting Our Own Beef
Переглядів 844 місяці тому
This isn’t what we normally post about. We specialize in worm farming, but we grew up on a cattle farm. We are lucky enough to be able to butcher our own beef every year. One thing we have always struggled with is vacuum sealing. Each year we lose meat due to freezer burn, but this year we finally found a solution. @Avidarmor has commercial vacuum sealers that work excellent for what we do. We ...

What is Vermicompost Tea? (Worm Tea)
Thank you for this explanation.
👍🏽
Thanks so much buddy! This was incredibly helpful. Have a three bucket system going right now and got some anaerobic issues as we battle days of 90% humidity and flood conditions here in Minnesota. Validating to see this same set up and know that it is strictly the humidity, not an issue with the system. Drilled a few more holes in the bottom and will be bringing um inside. This is hands down the best video showing this process.
How do you make it easy to separate the bottom bucket from the next bucket. Mine are sticking together.
Love video very informative! New subscriber from SC
How do I make sure I am making a good worm tea?
I think you did a great job of explaining the system. We have created several of these but just recently we had one system that the worms were crawling up the side of the second bucket and the whole system started to smell. Can you tell me what could have gone wrong?
My guess would be one of two things. First you could have added to much green material such as kitchen scraps. If you add more than they can eat in just a few days then it can start to rot and smell. The other thing could be that you added to much water and made it to where there wasn’t enough oxygen making it into their bedding.
Love your DIY trommel it's brilliant I may copy you
Love your set up keeping u fit 🇳🇿❤️🪱
I made one, and it seems to be working, but the worms are staying in the middle bucket instead of migrating up. Also, fruit flies! How do you prevent them?
If the top bucket has a good compost to food mix they they will eventually move up once they are completely done with the middle bucket. Fruit flies are probably the biggest reason people stop having a worm bin. There are a few tricks to keep the population low. You want to keep the pH higher. So try to avoid acidic foods and coffee grounds. Also, keep the bin a little more dry. Cardboard is a good way to help this. Then only feed your worms enough to last a day or two. You want to also grind it up as much as possible so they can eat it quicker.
Hi new to your channel. Very good video. New subscriber from SC 😊 Are holes drilled in top bucket?
@@sandraschofield7017 yes they are.
I believe this is the best explanation of the 3 bucket system. Thanks
Great idea looks good 🇳🇿❤️
Pretty kool!
Too bad nobody knows what a worm casting is....
Interesting set up, thanks for sharing!
You didn't show inside the buckets, before and after
Just leaves 🍁 and not a dog food ‼️‼️‼️‼️ 🍁👍🏻🙏🏻 🍀
Nice looking castings 🇳🇿🪱
Thanks for the start to finish video. I harvested my outdoor bin after the winter yesterday and there were a lot of overs in the compacted material. It looks like your castings are much more uniform inconsistency. ~ Sandra
Does humidity factor in to the temperature we are to maintain? Example, in Ontario Canada we can have 80 degrees but with humidity feels like 90+F... Is the system affected by humidity I guess I am asking.
Humidity really has more to do with the moisture level. You want to have your bin wet but not so wet that the bedding pours out water when you squeeze it in your hand.
Can you use dew worms or do you have to have red wrigglers?
I do not know about dew worms. We only have red wigglers. I would have to do more research on dew worms
@@hollisfarmllc thank you.
Ooooh... You have all the good toys for processing meat! I'm Jealous! Heh. God Bless!!!
thanks for the video, i would think you would need to place a screen on inside bottom of 2nd bucket to prevent worms from falling into leachete in third bucket.
A couple will sometimes fall through but I just throw them back in when I check on them every couple weeks. It’s pretty minimal though.
Nice
What are the best worms, night crawlers?
Red wigglers and night crawlers are your two most used ones I’d say. They are both very good for composting though. The big difference is that red wigglers are more of a top worm where as night crawlers will usually go deeper into the soil. So a lot of people will actually use them in the same bin so that the red wigglers are on top and the night crawlers can continue to work the soil in the bottom on the bin. We only have red wigglers at the moment.
Do you need to empty the third or bottom bucket from time to time??
On occasion. It’s good to check anytime you change one of the other buckets. But usually if you don’t add too much water, it’s usually fine most of the time.
If you use leaves instead of home grown compost do you add the same amount of water and do you need to mix in some soil or compost if you only have bagged compost. (I am a new worm bin composter!)
You can just do leaves if you want, really you just need to make sure they stay wet. Leaves will sometimes dry up quick, but once the worms start breaking them down then it’s easier to keep them wet. Be careful with bagged compost, check the ingredients on the bag to make sure it is all natural and has not added fertilizers. These could potentially kill your worms or heat up your bin. Good luck!
They turned out nice 🪱🇳🇿
Where do you store them during the colder months?
We keep all of our worms and castings in our garage right now. And it is heated and cooled so they can stay warm during the winter and cool during the summer.
@@hollisfarmllc thank you!
What temperature does this need to stay at
You need to keep your bin around 60-80 degrees. 70-75 is about perfect
Thank you. Very well described. I went straight to the greenhouse and made one 😊
Thank you,,,you've inspired me to implement this system this year!
Saya mau belajar cara pembuatan pupuk casting, terima kasih infonya 👍🏻
I hope my castings will be as dry and friable as yours. Mine tender to clump together. I have a big 3 tiered system which is too bulky and heavy for me.
This is THE best 3 bin vermicomposting video I’ve seen…and I’ve seen A LOT of them! I’m a middle school teacher and want to bring vermicomposting to our school to help us support the new landscaping that we’ve been adding. I will use your video with the kids! Thank you!
That’s awesome! Thank you so much! We will hopefully be getting some more videos up here pretty soon now that it’s starting to get a little warmer outside.
goed filmpje en een hele goede uitleg
What is the best food to feed them
We have another video that goes into some detail on what you can and cannot feed your worms if you want to check that out. But for a quick answer, we feed them our natural food scraps from our kitchen and coffee grounds. They also eat on the compost we use for bedding.
Nice and easy vermicomposting system that anyone can easily build. If I could make a little suggestion, I realize you are a new content creator, but I think it would be nice if you introduced yourself and let people know your name in the introduction. It's important to build a personal rapport with your viewers. They are more likely to subscribe and help you grow your channel if they feel that you are a friend.
How do you not smash your worms with 3rd bucket?
In a three-tier worm bucket system the third bucket doesn't smash the worms because the holes that are drilled in the bottom are spaced out to allow for proper airflow and drainage without causing harm to the worms. Additionally, the worms have the ability to move away from areas of pressure, ensuring their safety as they navigate through the layers of the system.
Looking good so far can’t wait to see it in use 🪱🇳🇿
Worm gang💪🏻🪱
Worm Gang
Very concise an well presented Thanks for posting
Great info guys
Thank you!
Dirt gang
My tips are before harvesting castings, put all the food on one side of the bed/bin for about a week, and let all the worms move to that side then harvest from the opposite side which should save you the trouble of sifting. Along the same lines another tip is if you're small scale, get an Urban Worm Bag 2.0, which again saves you the hassle of sifting as you harvest from the high-pressure bottom where worms don't care to be.
This is a great tip! We are in the process of building a new worm bin that has a screen in the middle to allow the worms to move from one side to the other so that we can do what you mention about pulling the castings from one side while your worms work on the other.
Just set up 3 of these systems on my back screen porch. I'm assuming they need to stay in the shade or inside right? Also, couldn't find a local worm supplier so I used the "big red worms" fishing worms, said they are (Eisenia Hortensis). Will these work?
The location itself isn’t as important as keeping the right bin temperatures. You just want to make sure your bin doesn’t get too hot or too cold. The eisenia hortensis worms are also great for composting. They are a little different from the red wiggler worms that we use, but will still give you some great worm castings!
Great info
Very helpful Well done Thanks
Man I missed that deal!
